Its a well known fact that the cell will not just be in the PS3. We know it will be in HDTVs, Blu Ray players, and the lot.
But what about computers? I've heard alot of talk of the cell being put into personal computers.
If they would be put into the PC market, do you think Intel or AMD would be scared of it? They really dont seem like they're having any problems.
I'm sure either Intel or AMD wouldnt have much problems developing somthing better then the cell.
What Im wondering, do you think large companys like Dell or HP would support the cell?
And Its just my guess that it wouldnt be compatible with current I/O devices like PCI-E and AGP.

Intel should be worried about AMD right now and thats about it. In terms of gaming AMD smokes Intel so bad it isnt even funny. BTW there is not a chance that the Cell will be on a computer.
There are many threads about this exact same topic, try to use the search button next time.

Agree, they should be afraid of each other. Dont worry about ghost, just worry about AMD, they are coming out strong.

I don't see CELL invading the home computer market just yet, if at all. Despite Cells apparent ability to adopt different Operating Systems, Windows et-al just aren't designed to work on that kind of processor. Maybe in time, however, if it turns out to be a worthy chip. Cell's roadmap sees it shrinking for portable devices, and gaining more cores in due course. Perhaps by the time that has happened, system convergence will be even greater than it is today, and the console/PC lines will have blurred.

If sony wanted to make a media Center of their own they would do it using Cell + Linux driven to optimise playing abilitys on HD content and Sound, This is already shaping up to sound like the PS3, isnt it? Well There you go then!

I'm sure there would be market for Cell based math accelerators you could put on Pci-E slot.
The point wouldn't be replacing current X86 desingns, but to work beside like current graphics cards trough a driver to a programmable open system.
Couple of those within the machine and there might be very intressing possibilities unavailable before.

What about giving Win"DOH"ws a kick in the butt and replacing it with a very comfortable and intiutive to use Linux OS with a sexy customizable Desktop...
Then there would be no need for a MS product. Sony would take care of the development of this Linux OS in terms of design (maybe even go for an corporate design theme that is similar to the one going to be used with the PS3)
Therefore Sony could perfectly integrate the PS3 with the PC and form a unified experience within the Sony world (PC <-> PS3)
But to make this step successfull there just has to be a bigger game support for the Linux OS...otherwise the gamers will stick with windows...
Just imagine: Having a Linux based OS for free (as its meant to be open source) with the ease of use compared to a MS product. That would rock. No more big money spending on forthcoming MS operation systems etc...
Maybe this way the Cell CPU could take away some market share from the PC market dominating Windows... All in all i dont take this scenario seroius but the cell has potential, no doubt about it...
p.s.: when i wrote unix everytime i meant linux acctualy ^^

lol well there will have to be some changes in the cell achitecture... IBM considers this as just the first step, they will have to add more chip features that are used in every-day computing, and were removed from the PS3's Cell design to increase the processing power in media/gaming applications. (certain VMX coding, and possibly an out of order processing unit instead of what it's got + perhaps some branch predectors etc.)
Then of course, the Cell was designed to be modular, so they can have a PC with 2-4 Cell processors quite easily.
If there is an O/S that runs on the Cell it's going to be Linux... The (modified) kernel already runs on the Cell, they just need to work on the optimization to use the SPE's now.
