Even if the PlayStation 3 isn't shipped with a HDD it would be nice if it will be possible to run a Linux Live distributionon from a Blu-Ray disc (packed with everything imaginable). If just the read time of the Blu-Ray player get descent I think the load times will not be too high, and files and settings could be saved to a Memory Stick :) . The whole idea behind Live discs is truely amazing, running Linux and letting it using the RAM as temporary HDD :)
What do you guys think?

not a 100% sure about that but it would be slow andthe fact that there is just not enough memery in RAM or memery stick duos....anyhow the HDD will be quite bit there i think is 3 ones:20 GB,100 GB,120 GB ones that are made by sony as in another topic on this fourm sony were saying 20GB is to small...

I think you got a good point there tomplast, but don't you think 256MB memory gets pretty small quick when linux OS is loaded in it? Well at least my gentoo super hyper duper optimized linux with barebone gnome 2.10 desktop environment takes something like 100MB of memory straight away, and yes temp files are on HDD! :)
But I think Sony might release somekind of live distribution of PS3 linux on BD-rom just for people to explore it and to get to know it better before they spend 100$-200$ on HDD.

Not everything can be loaded directly but if the Blu-Ray player is fast enough and that the data can get transfered from it to the RAM quickly enough the experience will be quite acceptable I think. I would love just to be able to check my emails from the PlayStation 3 without having to start my computer with Windows (which I currently am not using that much because Kubuntu is much better :D )

i think it needs to be confirmed that sony are supporting linux properly this time round before speculating on how they will incorporate linux.

Yup, but they have said much more this time about Linux than for the PS2 if i'm not misstaken. I think they will support Linux, there have been patches to the kernel to get it working with Cell so I don't doubt for a second that we will see Linux on PS3.

No, a live linux CD running on a system with 256 MBs ram runs pretty good... Check out www.ubuntu.com if you want to see how well... and d/l the live CD, and put it ina machine with 256MBs ram -- it runs well..

You mean like a Live disc? I don't know. . .you wouldn't be able to download any updates (without the hard drive), and Linux is CONSTANTLY getting community updates/new programs/etc etc.
But, Maybe you could burn a Ubuntu disc, and try it out on the system, just to see how it works?

I dont think Sony would want it to read the Ubuntu disk, Sony may want to sell their own Linux which will be optimized for the PS3. Also Sony may want to capitalize on this Linux idea.
