Matsu****a Electric to mass produce double-layer Blu-ray discs -report
12.04.2005, 06:49 PM
TOKYO (AFX) - Matsu****a Electric Industrial Co Ltd is planning mass production of double-layer Blu-ray discs, a next-generation optical media that can store 50 gigabytes of data, and will begin shipping samples to Hollywood studios by January, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources.
The business paper said the company installed a line to produce double-layered discs at a California site in October and is now working to raise production speed as well as lower costs and defects.
Matsu****a already mass produces single-layer Blu-ray discs and is getting ready to commercialize that business.
The double-layer Blu-ray disc is being positioned against HD DVD, the rival next-generation format that is being touted by a group led by Toshiba Corp.

Great to see that its been officially annouced now, so all those non-believers can now see that it is in fact true, 50 GB discs, here we come! :D
Blu-ray: "Say good bye HD-DVD, your now officially crap compared to me"
HD-DVD: "but i can get to 45GB!"
Blu-ray: "Oh, no, thats not all, see i can have many more layers, i can reach 200GB"
HD-DVD: "Well, IN theory"
Blu-ray: "well so was 50GB, in theory..."
HD-DVD: "Well...well you suck, ha!"
Blu-ray: "honestly...why do i have to put up with this..."
HD-DVD: "i rule, you suck, i will win, you cant do anything, its all theory"
Blu-ray: "¬_¬ someone smash it..."

I am glad to hear of all these blu-ray advancements and it is not even 2006 yet! Now we have 4x BD read/write chips and dual-layer BD-rom mass production! What kind of nails HD-DVD still needs for its coffin to just give up the battle?
