Fox Filmed Entertainment, a motion picture outputting division of News Corp predicted that the upcoming battle of blu-ray and HD-DVD is a one-sided war.

Speaking with Reuters Media and Advertising Summit in New York, co-chairman James Gianopulos said, "In terms of the number of companies involved, the PS3 momentum and the level of content that is committed to Blu-ray, it does seem to have a pretty strong lead. We believe that Blu-ray not only has the superior technology and backing in terms of strength to market but also the superior content protection."

Blu-ray currently sports over 150 members under its belt. A significantly large no. compared to the competing format. Two of the world's largest computer companies are also on that list. Ensuring a large selection of Blu-ray players, recorders, PC drives, Blu-ray Disc equipped PCs and blank media when both formats go out at each other in full force next year.

Sony's PlayStation 3 will include a Blu-ray player out of the box at a subsidized price in order to help its mass penetration. A welcome move, considering how well the PlayStation 2 performed in the last 6 years, selling 100 million consoles. Sony may have just asked a premium price for it's product knowing atleast half of those figures would surely return for another go at PlayStation next successor.

That is one of the main reasons why high-profile companies like Fox, Warner and Paramount are flocking to join Sony backed Blu-ray Disc Association. Similar comments from Paramount and Lions Gate executives also cited PS3 to be a major factor in determining the winner of the next-generation DVD disc.

here is the article guys.

Didn't Sony have 100 million PS2s shipped out, not sold? There's a difference there.

They're as good as sold, Arcturus. The price is going to drop to $100 soon, so it will be the thing to put in cars and the back of SUVs all over the place. Also, it will sell real well in poorer countries at that price point.

Yeah, any guesses out there on when Sony will finally cut the price of the PS2 to $99 to get one last spurt of sales before the PS3 gets the spotlight? My guess is right before the launch of Kingdom Hearts 2, sometime in the next 2 weeks...

I think the tally for PS2 is at 92 million sold.

Still just half of that is like 46 million, no small number by any stretch.

Xbox was something like. 22 million?

I remember about 6 months after ps2 came out, Electronic Gaming Monthly stated that they believed that in a couple of years, the Gamecube will be the most popular console, then in 2ed place would be ps2, then in last would be Xbox, and now look wat actually happened! Really bad guess, but at the time I acually agreed with the magazine.

No offense, It's kinda interesting you mention this. Because I don't recall Sony shipping out PS3's to retailers for free, or do they? Sony actually sold all those colossal shipments to retailers/wholesalers worldwide. So it's practically SOLD shipments from Sony's perspective to be honest. I'm sure the article was also pointing out exactly that ;) Peace!

What exactly is HD-DVD even doing that could be considered a solid competitor to Blu-Ray though? Blu-Ray has all the backing, has worked out all the problems, has the Playstation 3 to make it hit tens of millions of consumers all over the world in incredibly short amount of time, has the better storage capacity, has the better scratch resistance coating, and has FAR more corporate sponsors so to speak.

HD-DVD really isn't much of a competitor in this stage of the game. Blu-Ray HAS already won, now its just time for the PS3 to release, the drives to sell and the movies to be made and whats done is done. HD-DVD can keep Microsoft lol. Microsoft will just be backing another loser just like they are with the 360.

Woops, did I say that out loud

Well they sold 100 million PS1; and have sold over 90 million PS2. Personaly there not much of a difference the Ps2 will still be on sale for years to come so the 100 million mark will easily be broken. Possibly even the 150 million mark.

hmmm Sony SOLD 10 million PSP's in under a year.... yep what is Toshiba doing with HD-DVD anyway?

They must know it's over before it's begun don't they?

No one does , but we are not talking about FOX news. This is FOX the motion picture studio, as in 20th Century FOX.

Steroyd, you got it switched around. No, blu-ray discs won't play on a DVD player. However, CD's DVD's and blu-ray discs can be played with a Blu-ray player, so no need for re-buying your DVD library

whoops didn't read that properly.

hang on didn't Sony say they'd have hybrid blu-ray discs. :?:

hence Blu-ray can play on DVD players, but not AT that high resolution...if you know what i mean.

I doubt it, is that even possible? If it is then whoa, technology is crazy. If anything, it would make sense to me having a Dualdisc of sorts, one side being DVD and the other being Blu-ray

I was under the impression that a Blue-Ray disc could have the dvd content on the same side as the BD-Rom content. Am I mistaken?

Blue Ray uses a blue laser to read the data while DVD uses a red laser. Hence a DVD player will not be able to read the Blue Ray disk as the red laser is to "thick" to read the data. Lefein I would imagine they could theoretically do this (The burner would have to have red and blue lasers) but the question is why would they want to burn in two different formats.

Hybrid discs that are able to be read by both BD and DVD players have been developed by JVC. Interestingly all the data fits on a single-sided, triple-layered disc.

Its possible to burn pits in a disc that are invisible to a different laser frequency, without losing the data from the other frequency. CDs and DVDs use different red laser frequencies and blu-ray uses a blue frequency laser. In theory all three could have different data on the same side of the same disc without interfering with each other.
