View Full Version : DiRT impressions

Well, I had the privilege (or should that be misfortune) of playing DiRT last night on my cuz's Xbox 360. Maybe misfortune is the wrong choice of word, because it's not like it's a bad game - it's just so inconsistent. The front-end is absolutely stunning; easily one of the best I've seen in many-a-game. Unfortunately, things go a bit downhill from there. The driving is decent enough, a bit twitchy even on tarmac, but then this is a rally game. Not the best dynamics I've seen in the series, but it's pretty good. However, once you've gawped at the seemingly stunning landscape and great crash damage modelling, you start to notice loads of popup, fogging, clipping...it's a mess really. Things get even worse in the replays, when you can literally see things being drawn in and out as the camera pans...

All I can say is, I'm glad the PS3 version is not releasing now, and I hope that they polish the game and iron out the bugs before they do release it. Now, I'm not a huge fan of the graphics on Forza 2 either, but despite the jaggies and bland look, the whole game is extremely well polished. Something DiRT lacks (probably because of the name!) but so desperately needs.

Still, such is the problem of todays games getting hyped way too much. Few games rarely live up to it. A solid 7/10 from me, so not bad at all, but lacking in what I value - polish and consistency.

Hopefully, they're going to get rid of the popups etc, for the PS3 version. Test Drive unlimited on 360 had the worst popups I have ever seen, surely the Dirt popups aren't as bad. I'm going to wait for the PS3 Dirt to try it out, because on Motorstorm and F1 there aren't any popups.

im just copying the attitude of some of the posters here.
The only people I have seen use that attitude is you. Why spam a thread that bears truth?

Anyways, on topic. With online, can you actually race people or is it just time trial type thing.

nice review, anyway.

and maybe you have some high expectation to the game, the demo itself i like it, and i don't have jaggies issues with it.

and just like forza, almost jaggies free, but i see some jaggies on
other monitor.

i found out, that most people using non native res on their hdtv lcd.
by using non native res, the jaggies is become more noticeable.

but thnx for the review

Thread moved to the right section - honestly didn't even know one existed for the 360 and Wii ;)

As for this comment:

Was the original post deleted? Anyway, he only posted that because I gave him an infraction for something flamebait-related. Let him cry and make a fool out of himself.

As for the game itself, yes, I guess I did have high expectations of it, but then it's hard not to in todays hype-driven society! I didn't say DiRT had jaggies (that's Forza 2). It's the draw-in and fogging that I was surprised to see. Not sure where the assumption that the games were running in non-native res came from though! He has a 720p LCD and that's what the games are running in. Forza 2 looks jaggy, DiRT doesn't, but it has its own set of issues.

We didn't take the game online unfortunately (got a disc read error that prevented us from doing much else apart from single player!). Still, he swapped the game this morning apparently and now all is OK.

I'm only 4 races into the career mode and so far I gotta to honest, MotorStorm is looking better.

The controls are loose, compared to Forza 2 you would notice the difference is big, because Forza is very tight. Feels like the cars have no weight, even with rumble on, Dirt still feels weightless compared to Motorstorm.

Overall, it's not the best racing game. Stay with Motorstorm if you like the rally or dirt racing.

You're absolutely right, the controls are very loose, and I mentined (I think!) the cars being a very twitchy. On one replay driving down a long straight on tarmac, you could see the car wobbling from side-to-side as I was fighting to keep it straight! Forza 2 and Motorstorm are much better in this regard.

I played the demo on my buddies 360 and man was I ever disappointed. The car handling is really bad and when I play a racer that comes first and then I look at the rest of the package however when I play a racer with physics I don't like I usually don't care enough to look at the rest of the game and that was the case here.

Great game, played it all weekend.
You can see distant trees poping up, or grass still drawing, which is a shame, but the car physics, damage, tracks, presentation is fantastic.
I hope the PS3 version will address some of the issues, but I wouldn't let these minor issues put you off bying the game on 360 (think PS3 isn't out until september), it is the best racer on any console at the moment and I am a Sony PS3 lover, so don't give me any fanboy coments!
Go out and buy it!

I always found The Mcrae games a little....clunky....handling wise, i always preferred WRC on the PS2. I will probably still buy it when it comes to the PS3, unless i cave and buy it on PC instead.

Once you have had enough of the visuals, the controls are terrible as it feels like the cars have know weight yet on the older games felt like they had a parachute on the back of the car
