CES 2005: No Delay, But No Date
Price? Release date? The same question that left us scratching our heads in Tokyo hovers over Vegas.
By Nix

January 5, 2005 - Fans of Sony Computer Entertainment's new handheld might have had an inkling from all the news and rumors surrounding the system's special and secret official US debut that certain pieces of the puzzle would be given at last at the event. That debut event, a pre-CES announcement event, has just closed, and the biggest news on that front is that there is no news - SCE America gave a vague Late March 2005 release date for the system, and did not announce a price.

Those of us who have been following the system all this time might have had a better feeling for what would and would not be announced at the event. Sony took the same tactic at TGS, focusing on the games instead of the big details. It's very-welcomed secret compartments tactic worked on that end - few in the room at CES have ever laid eyes on a PSP, and once they got a chance to play the games and see the screen, many of the questions fell away.
Of course, you at home were not here to be wowed by the system, so your boiling questions are still whipping up the waters. In Japan, Sony waited until about a month before launching the system to announce price and date - two announcements that ended up being so shocking that they created their own buzz away from show event coverage. It is expected that SCE America will take the same tact, waiting until just before the launch to run a blitz of big PSP announcements … it is unknown if Sony has another shocker in store like the sub-$200 Japanese import price, but we're eager to find out one way or another.

That's the story so far: PSP will be released, as originally announced, in time for Q4 2004's close and was said to be planned for late March 2005. There is no price set for the system. Now, please stop sending us emails asking when it's coming out and for how much … please?

Yeah i went to my EB store today and they are taking preorders now for March 25th and preorders for the games for March 15th.

reminds me of the Xbox launch where the games were released almost 7 days before launch

lol that would suck the anticipation would be so much greater if u already had a game in ur hand, and what if you couldnt get an xbox that would be so much worse, but then again it's good marketing.

i just read in a gamespy article that sony plans to release the psp before march. that would give me and many others plenty of time afterwards to wait for the hyped-up peolpe to just GO AWAY! and get it once on shelves a few weeks afterwards.

Well...everyone says march but you know they might pull some strings and move it up a month or two...but I'm still thinking that the march date is very stable...

A month or two could be next week. I bet they will stick to March, but use the silent tactic to build anticipation.

you gotta remember though that a good percentage of the gaming population doesnt dive through all the information out there. alot of people dont even know that the psp is out in japan and is comming to the US until they read a magazine or see a commercial on tv.

it sounds odd but its true. people like us that search for info about the latest and greatest things comming to gaming are in the minority.

So you mean we're called geeks?

Wait no I don't like that term, maybe a slob. Yeah, that's it. Don't call me a geek, just call me a lazy slob.

Yeah, and I agree with you E-Z, my friend he's a gamer, a less of what I am. And he gets all his info from magazine. And he thinks they made a design for a PS3 already. You must be crazy.

They might have a design for the PS3. Why couldn't they. Aren't they showing it at E3, which isn't that far from now.

And please for everything that's it worth I hope Sony doesn't release the PSP until March. All of EA's games aren't even running at 30fps yet. Some are even running at 15 fps. IGN stated that the graphics and sound are great they just need about 6 to 8 weeks to iron somethings out.

lol they wont. you cant release without some games to go with it. theres only a couple games they could port from the japanese launch that would sell good here. they have to wait for more games to be finished
