Hey earlier when the PSP was announced. Sony said that it would come with a translation program that let you speak into it and it would translate those words in a diff language. Has anyone heard any news from this??? I havent. Did SONY abandon this program or what??

Translation from text to text is hard enough as it is. Nevertheless doing voice recognition to text to translation, back to voice.

Not going to happen, not for a very long time yet.

Though there are quite a few big name companies trying to do this. If any succeed, they will have a huge market waiting for them.

Sony Debuts Talkman, New PSP Games

Although the software lineup for Sony's PSP is so far dominated by franchises and famous names, Sony Computer Entertainment today unveiled at least one unusual new title for the upcoming handheld. Talkman, shown at the PlayStation Meeting 2004 event in Japan (and ably reported upon by Impress Game Watch), builds on the voice-recognition of games like Lifeline with automated voice translation.

Talkman (obviously a rib on Sony's promotion of the PSP as the "Walkman of the 21st century") accepts voice input from a microphone peripheral, which plugs into the PSP's built-in microphone port rather than one of its USB ports. The central character -- a multi-lingual cartoon bird named Max -- can converse with the player in up to nine languages, and translate comments in one language into another.

The demonstration version, presented by SCE's Yo*****ru Yamamoto, showed only translation between Japanese and English, in the context of a conversation between a Japanese tourist and an American hotel clerk. The finished product evidently features many more potential situations, making it useful both as a translation tool and a teaching tool. Max can judge and correct the user's pronunciation of a foreign language based on the reading of key sentences.

Or at least in an ideal world it can. In practice, SCE's earlier voice-recognition efforts on PlayStation 2 -- Operator's Side and Deka Voice -- have met with mixed success. Early impressions of Talkman's performance have been favorable, though, so we'll look forward to seeing what the finished product can do.

Sony's other revelation as far as PSP software was the display of a wider range of finished hardware, discs and packaging, including colorfully-patterned game discs for Sarugetchu and Minna no Golf and limited-edition PSPs as well. The white Gran Turismo 4 edition obviously echoes the old Ceramic White PlayStation 2 model.
