PS3 System and Miscellaneous Stuff
Q: What's the difference between the 20GB and the 60GB/80GB model?
A: Apart from the larger HDD, the difference is as follows: The 60GB/80GB has a built in MemoryStick/SD/CompactFlash card reader, and a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. http://www.playstation.com/products.html (http://www.playstation.com/products.html)
Q: How do I at a glance tell the difference between the two models?
A: The 60GB/80GB model has a silver trim running on the front of it, and has a flap concealing the card readers to the left of the disc slot. The 20GB model has no silver trim, and no flap.
Q: Which cables comes with the standard PS3 package?
A: The PS3 comes packaged with a USB cable for connecting your controller to the PS3 (for pairing it to your PS3 and recharging it), a Composite A/V cable (the standard cable that also came with the PS1 and PS2 - red, white, and yellow connectors), an Ethernet cable, and a power cable.
Q: Which outputs/connectors are on the PS3?
A: On the back: Power cable, A/V port, Optical audio (toslink), Ethernet port, HDMI 1.3 port. On the front: 4 x USB 2.0, disc drive slot. Memory Stick/SD/Compact Flash Slots (60GB/80GB model only).
Q: How large and bulky is the PS3's power supply?
A: The PS3 has an internal power supply, so it connects directly to a wall outlet.
Q: Can I use a PS3 that says 120V (US and Japan) in Europe (220V) without a step-down converter and vice versa?
A: Yes. The PS3s internal power supply is universal. It will take any voltage between 110V-240V, regardless of what it says on the PS3.
Q: Can the PS3 stand vertically, like the PS2? Which position is better?
A: Yes. You can even still turn the PS symbol. Some people think that vertical is best because of better cooling, but I'm not sure if it matters.
Q: When will the different colour PS3 be available?
A: Nothing has been announced yet.
Q: What does SKU stand for?
A: Stock Keeping Unit. Currently, there's three PS3 SKU's - the 20GB model, the 60GB model, and the 80GB model. Read more about the meaning of SKU here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_Keeping_Unit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_Keeping_Unit)
Q: What does the orange and green lights next to the USB slots mean?
A: The yellow indicates that the PS3 is accessing the internal HDD, the green indicates that the PS3 is accessing the internet through Wi-Fi or cable.
Q: How much noise does the PS3 make?
A: Not much. I haven't been able to find any scientific tests of the PS3 noise level, but the general opinion is that it's a quiet console. Look here for a comprehensive test on the PS3's fan noise: http://asklandd.dk/ps3/ps3-fan-noise.html
Q: Is the 60GB/80GB PS3 physically bigger than the 20GB PS3?
A: No.
Q: How much power does the PS3 consume?
A: About 175-200W when playing games and watching movies. About 2W when in stand-by mode. Read more here: http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm (http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-1.htm)
Q: Someone told me that the PS3s break down very easily. Is this true?
A: So far, the failure rate for the PS3 is reportedly very low, so this is not true. There's no official numbers of failure rates, but general opinion on the internet is, that the PS3 is a very stable piece of machinery. It has been tested under very stressful conditions and passed with flying colours. See here for one of those tests: http://www.ps3vault.com/how-to-kill-a-ps3-console-1975
Q: I need my PS3 manual, but I don't have access to it at the moment. Can I find it online?
A: Yes.

Q: My PS3 gets very dirty very quickly. How do I clean it without scratching it up?
A: Use a 100% cotton rag, a microfiber cloth, or very soft tissue paper. Don't use paper towels, or "grainy" synthetics, as they have a tendency to scratch up the plastic. If you need to use any cleaning agent, use a mild solution of dishwashing liquid and water. Don't use alcohol or any other chemical - it might mess up the plastic. Don't press too hard on your PS3 - it scratches very easily.
Q: Will my PS3 warn me if it gets too hot, or will it just crash (and maybe break)?
A: Your PS3 wil give you a warning that it's overheating and will shut down automatically. Here's a description of how that looks like: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=57796 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=57796)
Note: I wouldn't count on this safety measure to kick in every time, so make sure your PS3 always has room to "breathe".
Q: I get an error code, the PS3 tells me that my system files are corrupt, and I should press X to restore, but it doesn't work. Is my PS3 broken?
A: Nope. What you need to do is to restore your PS3 System Files. This will delete everything on your hard drive (including the Linux partition, if you have one), so remember to backup important data before doing this (game saves etc.) To restore the PS3 system files, go to Settings -> System Settings -> Restore PS3 System.
Q: Is it safe to leave my PS3 running all the time?
A: Yes. It will cost you a lot of electricity though. Lots of people have had their PS3 on, running Folding@Home without problems for days.

PS3 Internal Hardware
Q: Is it possible for me to exchange the internal HDD on the PS3 to a bigger one? If so, how do I do that?
A: Yes. For detailed instructions, go here: http://www.gamersreports.com/article/43/1/ (http://www.gamersreports.com/article/43/1/) Please be very careful when you unscrew the 4 screws in the HDD cradle, as they are VERY soft. You can EASILY strip the head (I did, and I used a correct sized screwsriver, and I knew what I was doing). If you strip the screws, you can still unscrew them by using a flat-headed pair of pliers and gripping onto the sides of the screw head that sticks up, apply LOTS of pressure and twist. It's messy, but it works ;o)
Q: What types of HDDs can I put inside my PS3?
A: You can fit a 2.5" SATA disk in the PS3. It's the same type as is used in laptops. The drive does not need to be PS3-certified or anything fancy, any 2.5" SATA will do. Drive speed (5.400 vs. 7.200 RPM) and drive cache isn't important, as the PS3 HDD doesn't need to be superfast. It's recommended that you use a 5.400 RPM drive because of less power consumption and heat generation. Read more here: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745407p1.html (http://ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745407p1.html) and here: http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/safety_support/additional_info.html#hd_replace (http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/safety_support/additional_info.html#hd_replace)
Q: How do I transfer files from my previous 2.5" HDD to a new, and bigger HDD if I want to switch?
A: You can backup your data onto a portable HDD or a memory stick. If you only have a memory stick, you can probably only fit your game saves onto it. You will then have to redownload all the stuff you had on the old HDD. If you have a USB HDD, you can backup the entire PS3 HDD onto that and restore the data onto the new PS3 HDD.
Q: Can I backup my PS3 internal HDD, and how?
A: Yes. The PS3 has an option in the XMB (Under System Settings, Backup Tools) to backup the internal drive. You decide the destination (USB HDD, memory stick).
Q: If I format my HDD or exchange it, do I have to setup all my users and system settings all over?
A: No. Only your messages from other users, game saves and downloadable content is erased. Your system settings are saved on FLASH-RAM chips on the PS3 motherboard. Your friends list is linked to your PSN ID, so when you re-enter the information, your friends list will be restored.
Q: When I got my 60GB PS3, it had 55/55 GB free. I downloaded an update, and now I only have 47/55 GB free, why is that?
A: The PS3 operating system reserves a part of your HDD for system use. If you format your PS3, you'll still have 47/55 GB free. It's got nothing to do with how much stuff you downloaded onto your PS3 (games, trailers, etc). Other numbers are valid for the 20GB and the 80GB SKU. Apart from the space reserved by the system, there's a difference in the way HDD space is calculated from the manufacturer. To get the "real" size of your HDD, mulitply the HDD's specified size with 0.93 to get the true size.
Q: How do I erase my PS3 HDD?
A: In the XMB, go to Settings -> System Settings -> Format Utility. You'll have the option to do a Quick Format or a Full Format. A Quick Format takes seconds, a Full Format takes hours. The difference is that with a Full Format, the data is overwritten multiple times, and cannot be restored in any way. This is a good option if you're formatting your HDD before selling your PS3. In any other case, a Quick Format will suffice.
Q: Can I use a 3.5" SATA HDD as an internal drive on my PS3?
A: Yes and no... It won't fit inside the PS3, so you'll have to have it outside your PS3, with cables going into the PS3. Here's a guide: http://www.myspace.com/playstaion3hddmod (http://www.myspace.com/playstaion3hddmod)
Q: Will replacing my internal PS3 HDD ruin my PS3 warranty?
A: No. Sony offers detailed instructions on how to exchange the internal HDD, as long as you follow those, your warranty is intact.
Q: At what speeds does the PS3 Blu-ray/DVD/CD drive read discs?
A: Blu-ray x 2, DVD x 8, CD x 24.
Q: What does "Front Loading Drive"/"Slot Loading Drive" mean?
A: The PS3's CD/DVD/BD drive is front loading. This means that there's no tray that comes out of the PS3. The disc is loaded into the PS by inserting it into a small slot in the front. The disc is then "sucked" into the PS3 - neat!
Q: Can you eject discs with the controller?
A: Yes, but only in the XMB - select the disc icon, press Triangle, and "Eject Disc". You can also eject the disc with the Blu-ray remote, at any time.
Q: What is the Cell Processor?
A: The Cell Processor is the CPU of the PS3.
Q: What is the RSX?
A: The RSX is the graphics chip of the PS3.
Q: How much RAM does the PS3 have?
A: 256MB of main RAM and 256MB of video RAM. The RSX graphics chip can actually use all 512MB of system RAM, but will do so with a performance drop.
Q: Where can I learn more about the inner workings of the PS3?
A: There's an excellent thread made by PS3 Forum user EbonySeraphim about this very subject here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=22858 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=22858)
Q: Will the PS3 get better performance when the Cell will shrink to 65nm?
A: No. The only thing that will happen is, that the Cell will become physically smaller, consume less power, and emit less heat. The speed and computing power of the Cell will not change.
Q: Will 20GB/60GB be enough?
A: That depends on how space you need ;o) If you don't plan on using your PS3 to store all your music and movie files, then 20GB is enough. Do you plan on copyiong all your music onto the PS3's HDD and use it as a media center, I'd go for the 60GB model. The cool thing is that if you at any time run out of space, you can easily upgrade the PS3's HDD to a bigger one. Currently, the biggest 2.5" SATA discs available are about 250-300GB in size.
Q: How come my 60GB PS3 tells me that I only have a 55GB HDD?
A: This is because of the way HDD sizes are calculated and advertised, compared to what a GB really is. When a HDD manufacturer sells a HDD as a 60GB model, the HDD manufacturer uses a value of 1.000.000.000 bytes per GB. In computer lingo, one GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes. Divide the two numbers, and you'll find that a 60GB HDD equals 55,88GB. The 0.88GB that's missing is used by the HDD to keep track of partition data, etc.
Q: Are the power and disc eject buttons on the PS3 really heat sensitive?
A: No, they react to electromagnetic fields, triggered by your touch, like a touch dimmer for lighting. You can use a conductve material (like a paper clip), but not an insulating one (like a piece of plastic).

PlayStation Network, PS3 Browser, PSP and Internet Connectivity, Wi-Fi
Q: How much does it cost to sign up for, and use the PSN and the Online Service?
A: Nothing. Sony offers these services free-of-charge.
Q: What are TCP/UDP Ports and Port Forwarding?
A: TCP/UDP ports are “windows” that your PS3 uses to “speak” to the internet. If one or more of these ports are closed, the PS3 can’t fully utilize the internet. This might give problems connecting to online games and during voice chat. To open (forward) these ports, you’ll need to tell your router which ports to forward, and where to forward them to (ie the PS3’s IP address). The procedure for this varies from router to router, check your router’s manual for info. Commonly, the section you need to access in your router to do this, is called “NAT”.
Q: What is DHCP?
A: DHCP means Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Simply put, it allows your PS3 to ask your modem or router to give it a unique IP address. This is transparent to the user, and will work in most cases. The “opposite” of using DHCP is to assign a Static IP for your PS3 (read below for more). If you need to forward TCP/UDP ports to your PS3, a Static IP address is preferable.
Q: What is a Static IP?
A: When you assign a Static IP to your PS3, you “lock” the PS3 to a fixed IP address by entering the data directly into your PS3’s Network Settings. This is preferable in some cases, especially when you need to forward TCP/UDP ports to your PS3. If you use DHCP, you risk that your PS3 might not have the same IP address every time, so your router will forward the TCP/UDP ports to the wrong device (another PC).
Q: NAT types - what do they mean?
A: The NAT type reported by your PlayStation tells you if your PS3 is fully able to use the internet.
NAT 1 means that your PS3 is connected directly to your modem, and has full access. No problem here.
NAT 2 means that your PS3 is connected through a router/firewalled connection, but has full access. No problem here.
NAT 3 means that your PS3 is connected through a router/firewalled connection, but it doesn't have full access. This means that one or more TCP/UDP ports are blocked. This is a problem in some games and when using voicechat.
What you need to aim for is a NAT 1 or a NAT 2 connection (they are equally good). If you have NAT 3, you’ll need to forward some TCP/UDP ports to your PS3. This is done through your router’s configuration menu. Check your router’s manual for info.
Q: What TCP/UDP ports does the PS3 use?
A: The PS3 needs to have the following ports open:
TCP: 80, 443, 5223
UDP: 3478, 3479, 3658
Some games might need more ports open.
Q: What is UPnP?
A: Universal Plug and Play. I'm not too knowledgable about it, and most things about it is irrelevant to the PS3,. If you enable it, and it works as it should, the PS3 should be able to open the ports it needs opened by itself, eliminating the need for port forwarding. Read more about UPnP here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Plug_and_Play)
Q: How do I connect to the internet if I have the 20GB model?
A: You can connect your 20GB PS3 directly to your modem or router, using a standard broadband cable, or you can buy a USB wireless adapter. If you choose the wireless adapter for the PS3, note that you'll need a wireless modem or router too.
Q: How do I connect to the internet if I have the 60GB model?
A: You can connect your 60GB PS3 directly to your modem or router, using a standard broadband cable, or you can connect through Wi-Fi.
Q: The PS3 asks me for an encryption key when I set up my wireless internet connection. What is that?
A: The encryption key is a safety measure on your wireless modem or router, to protect you from having others log onto your wireless network, and use your internet connection. You'll have to enter your modem's or router's configuration menu to find the encryption key (commonly knows as a WEP-key). Check your modem or router manual for how to do this.
Q: What kind of transfer protocols and transfer speeds does the PS3 Wi-Fi adapter support? (60GB model only)
A: It supports 802.11b and 802.11g with data rates of 11Mbps and 54 Mbps, respectively.
Q: Can I use a dial-up modem connection for my PS3?
A: No, only broadband is supported.
Q: Can I have multiple accounts on my PS3 for each PS3 region (European/US/Japan)?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I update my PS3 without an internet connection?
A: Yes. Read below.
Q: What's Master and Sub accounts?
A: Read about it here: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/friends/signup.html (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/friends/signup.html)
Q: Can I change my default homepage in the PS3 browser?
A: Yes. While in the browser, press the triangle button, then select the "Home Page" option.
Q: I have a very fast internet connection, but it's very slow on my PS3. Why is that?
A: There's a lot of reasons that can cause this. You might need to check your port forwarding, the signal strength if you use Wi-Fi, your cabling. Maybe the PSN servers are just slow.
Q: Can I transfer files directly from my PC onto my PS3 and vice versa through my home network?
A: Yes and no. This feature is not supported by the PS3, but some people have had success using a program named Red Kawa to accomplish this. Read more here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=63281 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=63281)
Q: Does the PS3 support Wake on LAN capabilities?
A: Currently it doesn't support this feature.
Q: I'm planning on getting a Wi-Fi Max for my PS3. Will a DS or PSP Wi-Fi Max work on my PS3?
A: Yes. The various Wi-Fi Max models are essentially the same.
Q: What kinds of external storage devices can I use to transfer files onto my PS3?
A: CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, BD-ROM, USB HDD, USB Memory Stick, Memory cards (60GB PS3 only)
Q: Can I stream a UMD movie from my PSP to my PS3, and display it on my TV?
A: Currently this is not possible.
Q: I have a bunch of movies and audio on my PC that I'd like to play on my PS3 without having to copy them to the PS3's HDD. Is there a way to stream from PC to PS3?
A: Yes. The PS3 can now recognize DNLA servers on your network and stream data from that. See this thread for more info: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=74559 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=74559)
Q: Why does the PSP have an IR port but the PS3 hasn't?
A: Your guess is as good as mine, but I guess that Sony didn't see the need for an IR port on the PS3.
Q: How is the PSP - PS3 connectivity going to work ?
A: Through Wi-Fi. At this time, you can only connect at home (The PSP and PS3 has to be within Wi-Fi range of each other). From PS3 firmware 1.60 you can access your PS3 with your PSP from any Wi-Fi spot in the world, as long as your PS3 is turned on at home (no Wake up on LAN ability).
Q: If I download a PSP game onto my PS3, can I play it on the PS3?
A: No, you'll still need a PSP to do so. Furthermore, you'll need to have the PSP connected to your PS3 via Wi-Fi.
Q: How do I get a PSN ID?
A: You sign up to the PSN on your PS3.
Q: How do I terminate a PSN account?
A: You need to contact SCEA's Consumer Service to terminate a PSN account. SCEA Consumer Services' Accounts and Billing line can be reached at 1-877-971-7669.
Q: Can I play online with people all over the world or is it locked to my region (USA, Japan, Europe, etc.)?
A: Please see the "Game Related Questions, Backwards Compability" section.
Q: Can the PS3 contract a virus or other unwanted malign software?
A: Technically yes, but no reports have been made of this happening yet. It's very unlikely that a virus will be made for the PS3, as the PS3 only runs signed code (programs that have been approved by Sony).
Q: I'm using a wireless internet connection on my PS3. How do I check my signal strength?
A: In the XMB, go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Connection Status.
Q: Can I import bookmarks from my PC to the PS3?
A: No.
Q: When I open my PS3 browser, it reopens the last website I visited. How do I change this behaviour?
A: While in the browser, press the Triangle button, select Tools -> Homepage. Uncheck the option "Restore Window at Browser Start".
Q: Can I set another homepage to open by default when I open the PS3 browser?
A: Yes. While in the browser, press the Triangle button, select Tools -> Homepage.
Q: How do I find my PS3's MAC Address?
A: In the XMB, go to Settings -> System Settings -> System Information.
Q: How can I measure the download and upload speed on my PS3?
A: In your PS3 browser, go to http://www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net/) - it's free and works like a charm with the PS3 browser. Remember to select a server close to where you live. Experiment with various servers, but normally the one closest to you is the fastest.

Q: Can my PS3 play HD-DVDs?
A: No.
Q: When I watch a Blu-ray movie, my PS3 freezes during playback. This happens once in a while, and it normally lasts for 5-10 seconds. Why is that?
A: The exact reason is unknown, but some users have had luck removing this problem by turning off Wireless Networking on their PS3 (60GB only) before watching a movie.
Q: What's better, Blu-ray or HD-DVD?
A: This is a matter of heavy discussion, and I can't answer this without starting a flame war ;o)
Q: Are Blu-ray discs easily scratched?
A: No. Even though the protective layer on a Blu-ray disc is only 0.1 mm thick (compared to 0.6 mm on CDs and DVDs), it's very hard and scratch-resistant (it's different from the coating on CDs and DVDs).
Q: I heard that the PS3's HDMI output is HDMI 1.3. My TV is only HDMI 1.0, will it work?
A: Yes.
Q: Does the PS3 upscale DVDs?
A: Yes.
Q: I want to have digital sound, but my amplifier doesn't have an optical input or a HDMI input, only a coaxial one. What do I do?
A: You can use an optical-coaxial converter. Here's one: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_i d=2948 (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2948&seq=1&format=2&style)
Q: I want to have digital sound, but my amplifier doesn't have any digital inputs at all. What do I do?
A: You'll need to get a new receiver.
Q: What's the difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD?
A: Technically, the difference is in the way they are produced in factories, the way layers on the disc are placed, and in the amount of storage capacity in each layer on the disc. A HD-DVD can store about 15GB per layer, Blu-ray 25GB. For a more technical comparison, go here: http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Blu-ray-vs_-HD-DVD/Differences.html (http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Blu-ray-vs_-HD-DVD/Differences.html)
Q: I plan to use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player mainly. Can I program my Universal Remote to control the PS3?
A: Only if your remote supports Bluetooth (I haven't seen one that does yet). The PS3 doesn't have an infrared port. There is a workaround to this though, read more here: http://www.remotecentral.com/articles/ps3-ir-remote2.htm (http://www.remotecentral.com/articles/ps3-ir-remote2.htm)
Q: I heard that <insert Universal or Paramount movie title here> is out on HD-DVD, but it will never come to Blu-ray. Why is that?
A: There is currently heavy competition between HD-DVD and Blu-ray to be the dominant format in the HD-movie business. The individual movie studios have chosen sides in this, some support Blu-ray, some support HD-DVD, some supports both formats. Currently, Universal and Paramount are currently only releasing their HD-movies on HD-DVD. Paramount recently chose to become HD-DVD exclusive.
Major studios that support Blu-ray:
Warner Bros.
Disney (Buena Vista)
Fox
Lionsgate
MGM
Sony Pictures
Major studios that support HD-DVD:
Paramount
Warner Bros.
Universal Studios
Q: Can I import (rip) my music CDs on the PS3?
A: Yes. The PS3 will encode your CDs into one of the audio formats it supports.
Q: Can I import (rip) my DVDs to the PS3?
A: No.
Q: What are the Blu-ray regions?
A: The Blu-ray regions are different from the ones used on DVD. The Blu-ray regions are labeled Region A, B, and C (compared to DVD regions labeled 0-8).
Region A: North America, Central America, South America, Koreas, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
Region B: Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Region C: India, Nepal, Mainland China, Russia, Central and South Asia.
Q: What are the DVD regions?
A: Here's a list of the DVD regions:
Region 1: USA, Canada.
Region 2: Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland.
Region 3: South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia.
Region 4: Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico).
Region 5: Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa.
Region 6: China.
Region 7: Reserved for Unspecified Special Use.
Region 8: Resevered for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc.
Region 0 or Region All: Uncoded and can be played worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.
Q: What does Full RGB and Super-White settings do?
A: In Settings -> Dosplay Settings, you have two options named RGB Full Range (HDMI), and Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI). Here's a quick explanation:
From personal experience, I know that Full RGB makes blacks black, and whites white (almost sounds like a detergent commercial ;o).
The reason behind this is that in normal RGB, when the picture is totally black, the default is to send a sligtly lighter than black colour ot the TV. Some TV's sees this as totally black, and displays total blackness, while other sees it as the lighter black, and displays that.
When you set full RGB on, black will be output as black, and if your TV supports this input, it shows black as black.
Man - reading that explanation makes me dizzy - I hope it makes sense to you ;o)
The same goes for whites. In normal setting, white is not 100% white, while in full setting it's white.
Please note that your TV must support these two modes - if it doesn't your picture will look "wrong".
Here's the technical rundown:
A pixel's colour is determined by three numbers ranging from 0 to 255. One number for each colour: Red, Green and Blue. With these three colours, you can create any other colour.
For example (Red, Green, Blue):
All black: 0, 0, 0
All white: 255, 255, 255
Yellow: 255, 255, 0
Purple: 255, 0, 255
Grey: 128, 128, 128
In the HDMI spec, total black is set to 16, 16, 16. Total white is set to 235, 235, 235.
Some TV's have total black set to 0, 0, 0, and total white to 255, 255, 255.
Some TV's have total black set to 16, 16, 16, and total white to 235, 235, 235.
This means that in the Normal setting, your PS3 will output total black as 16, 16, 16.
If your TV has total black as 16, 16, 16, it will display a total black picture.
If it has total black at 0, 0, 0, it will display a slightly grey picture.
The "Full RGB" setting simply tells your PS3 to output total black as 0, 0, 0 instead of 16, 16, 16, thus enabling you to see the picture as it's supposed to be seen. This requires that your TV accepts 0, 0, 0 as total black though.

The PS3 Controller, Bluetooth, and External Devices
Q: What's the name of the PS3 controller?
A: Sixaxis.
Q: Does the Sixaxis have rumble?
A: No. Rumour goes that might change in the future. Sony had some legal issues with a company that owns the patent on the rumble technology Sony used, but these issues have now been solved.
Q: What's the difference between the PS2's DualShock and the PS3's Sixaxis controller?
A: The Sixaxis doesn't have rumble, and it's cordless (works via Bluetooth). Furthermore, the Sixaxis has larger L2 and R2 buttons (they protrude further out from the controller that on the DualShock), and there's a new button on the front, the PlayStation Button. The Sixaxis is also a lot lighter than the DualShock. Finally, the Sixaxis has motion sensing, it is capable of sensing motion in six directions: up/down, left/right, forward/backward, and tilting in all three axis.
Q: How long can I play before I need to recharge my Sixaxis?
A: About 30-35 hours.
Q: My Sixaxis ran out of battery, can I still play?
A: Yes, but you need to connect the Sixaxis to your PS3 with the USB cord. This will recharge the Sixaxis while you play.
Q: How do I recharge the Sixaxis?
A: Through a USB cable that comes with the PS3. You can charge it on the PS3 and most PCs.
Q: How many times can I recharge the Sixaxis?
A: The official statement says about 1,000 times.
Q: What kind of battery is inside the Sixaxis?
A: The Sixaxis has a Lithium-Ion battery. This means that the battery isn't suspect to the "memory effect" that eg. Nickel-Cadmium batteries have.
Q: Can I replace my Sixaxis battery?
A: Yes, but it's not officially supported. Read more here: http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/safety_support/additional_info.html#wireless%20battery (http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/safety_support/additional_info.html#wireless%20battery) Please note that the link only provides instructions on how to remove the battery. Since the battery is connected to the Sixaxis via a standard plug, you can replace it, but it's not officially supported or endorsed by Sony.
Q: How many controllers does the PS3 support?
A: 7.
Q: Can I use the controller to turn my PS3 on and off?
A: Yes.
Q: What does the new button (the PlayStation Button) on the PS3 controller do?
A: You can use it to turn the PS3 on and off, and to exit games and movies to the XMB.
Q: Will you be able to use the PS3 controller on a PC when it's connected via USB?
A: This is not officially supported. Some have done it though, read more here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=45752 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=45752)
Q: My controller locked up - what do I do?
A: On the bottom side of the Sixaxis there's a small reset button. Press this button with a pointy object.
Q: What's the range of the Sixaxis controller?
A: The official word from Sony is about 65 feet (20 meters).
Q: I've seen pictures of the PlayStation button on the Sixaxis light up. Mine doesn't...
A: This is because it can't. In some publicity photos from Sony, the button lit up, but this is either a media stunt, or an optical refraction of the light used when taking the picture. Some people have had success in modifying their Sixaxis, adding a small LED underneath the button. Read more here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=51041 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=51041)
Q: Can I use any USB <-> Mini USB cord to charge my controller, or does it have to be the one supplied wth the PS3?
A: You can use any cord, as long as the plugs fit.
Q: The PS3 doesn't recognize my external USB HDD. Why is that?
A: Your external HDD needs to be formatted as a FAT32 partition. Windows XP normally only formats in NTFS. Another quirk is, that Windows XP will only format partions of up to 32GB as FAT32. FAT32 supports partitions much larger than that. To format a partition larger than 32GB using Windows XP, use this freeware tool: http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm)
Q: What kind of headset do I need to use online chat?
A: You'll need a Bluetooth headset, like the ones used for cell phones, or a USB headset. There have been reports of some Bluetooth headsets not being fully compatible with the PS3.
Q: Which Bluetooth headset should I buy?
A: Those questions are beyond the scope of this FAQ. Check out this thread for inspiration: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=42561 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=42561)
Q: What kind of keyboard and mouse does the PS3 support?
A: The PS3 supports USB keyboards and USB mice, including wireless ones.
Q: Which keyboard or mouse is best for my PS3?
A: Those questions are beyond the scope of this FAQ. As long as they are connected through USB, go for what you like.
Q: Can I use my USB mouse and keyboard to play games?
A: This is not inherently supported in games. If the game developer chooses to support this feature, he can do so. Unreal Tournament 3 is rumoured to support mouse and keyboard.
Q: If I can't use a mouse and keyboard for games, why do I need one?
A: You can use them to input text faster (good in chats and creating messages to your friends), and when using the PS3 browser.
Q: Can I connect a PS/2 keyboard to my PS3?
A: Not directly, as the PS3 doesn't have a PS/2 port. To do so, you will need a PS/2-USB converter.
Q: How do I transfer my PS2 games to my PS3 - there's no PS2 memory card slot?
A: You need a Memory Card Adaptor. This is an official Sony accessory.
Q: If I attach a USB printer to the PS3 will it be able to print things off the internet?
A: The PS3 supports a very limited range of printers. This selection will be expanded continually. Check this link for more information on which printers are supported: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/index.html (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/index.html)
Q: Will Sony make an official Bluetooth headset for the PS3?
A: At this time, this has not been officially confirmed.
Q: Can I use a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard on my PS3?
A: I can't see why not, but I haven't seen reports of anyone doing it. It all depends on the PS3 accepting your keyboard and mouse as a valid Bluetooth device.
Q: My Sixaxis controller sometimes loses the connection to my PS3. It only lasts a few seconds. Why is this?
A: Some users have reported that having other Bluetooth devices close to the PS3 can interfere with the Sixaxis. Try disabling Bluetooth on your cellphone, etc.
Q: My neighbour has a PS3 - can I control his PS3 with my controller?
A: No (and yes). You'll need to pair your controller to his PS3. This can only be done by physically connecting it to his PS3 via the USB cable. If you manage to do this, you can control his PS3, but then you can't use the controller on your own PS3 (as it's now paired to your neighbour's PS3, and not yours). For more about pairing, read this: http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/hardware/wireless_control.html#step1 (http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/hardware/wireless_control.html#step1)
Q: What happened to the funky-looking silver boomerang controller?
A: This design was scrapped, and Sony decided to re-use the basic design of the DualShock.
Q: What kind of USB ports are in the PS3?
A: The PS3 has 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports on the front of the PS3.
Q: Will USB hubs be supported?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I use a PS2 USB headset on my PS3?
A: Yes. Not all models may be supported though.
Q: Can I connect my Bluetooth phone to the PS3?
A: No.

Audio and Visual Devices
Q: What is SDTV, EDTV, HDTV?
A: SDTV is Standard Definition TV (480i). EDTV is Enhanced Definition TV (480p). HDTV is High Definition TV (720p, 1080i, 1080p). http://www.projectorcentral.com/hdtv_edtv.htm
Q: What is HDCP?
A: High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection. In short it's a copy protection for High Definition content, such as Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies. For the PS3 be able to show a picture via HDMI (or DVI through a converter cable), the TV or monitor needs to be HDCP-compliant. HD-TVs are HDCP-compliant, most PC monitors aren't. If your TV has a sticker with the HD-Ready logo on it, it'll have HDCP. If you're in doubt, check your TV's manual.
Q: What is ICT?
A: Image Constraint Token. It is a copy protection scheme to prevent people from ripping HD-video through analog video outputs (Composite, Component, VGA, S-VHS). In short, if you play a HD movie with the ICT flag set, you'll have to use HDMI, or the HD movie will be downscaled to DVD-quality. Currently the ICT flag isn't used commercially. Read more here: http://www.digitalhome.ca/hdtv/idx/0/414/article/What_is_an_Image_Constraint_Token.html
Q: What's the difference between HDMI and DVI?
A: DVI is basically the same as HDMI, but without sound. (There's more to it than that, but it's not relevant here ;o)
Q: What does 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p mean?
A: These are different resolutions, displayable by the PS3. Not all resolutions are supported by all TVs, namely 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. These resolutions are only supported by HDTVs. Not all HDTVs support all HD resolutions, this varies from model to model. Read more about the resolutions here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-definition_television
Q: Is 1080p really that important?
A: This is a subject of much debate. For the average user, I'd say it isn't.
Q: I have a TV with only one HDMI input, but I have two or more devices that outputs HDMI. Is there a way to switch signals easily?
A: Yes, you can buy HDMI switches that accepts multiple HDMI sources, allowing you to switch between which one is output to your display device. You can even get some that works wirelessly, and some that can be controlled by a remote.
Q: Can I use my PS3 on my PC monitor? (DVI input)
A: Yes, if the monitor is HDCP-compliant. Most PC monitors aren't.
Q: Can I use the PS3 on my PC monitor (VGA input)
A: Yes and no. You can't do it directly, but a device that converts a Component signal to VGA can be bought. Check this thread for further info: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=50722
Q: I heard that some HD TVs aren’t working too well with the PS3 when connected through HDMI. What’s that about?
A: If the problem is what's knows as “The HDMI Handshake Error”, the symptom is often that the TV blacks out when going from the XMB to a game or vice versa. You’ll have to turn the TV off and on, or reselect the HDMI input on it, for it to show the picture again. This is caused by the way HDMI works.
Simply put, when outputting through HDMI, the PS3 and your TV says “Hello!” to each other. Sometimes this communication becomes garbled in some way, or it times out (one part doesn't respond within a set timeframe). For some TV owners, this problem has been solved by updating the TVs firmware. Others are still waiting for Sony to correct this through a PS3 firmware upgrade. Another option is to use another connection type (e.g. Component). Some people find that Component will give you a better picture than HDMI, but it's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like Component better.
It seems that this problem is almost non-existant after a recent firmware update. The PS3 now syncs perfectly with almost all HDTVs.
Q: How will PS3 games look on a normal TV?
A: It will look good, but small text can be hard to read. In short, PS3 games will look a lot nicer than on a HDTV than on a SDTV.
Q: What's the best TV for my PS3?
A: I can't answer you ;o) Go for what you like and can afford. You can also check out this thread: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=16829
Q: What's the difference between all the different output types? (HDMI, DVI, Component, Composite?)
A: Picture quality and picture resolution. They range, from worst to best, Composite, Component, HDMI/DVI. HDMI and DVI is essentially the same, but in a DVI signal there's no sound feed. HDTVs will almost always have either a DVI or a HDMI input, but rarely both.
Q: My TVs max. output is 720p, but it accepts 1080i or 1080p and downscales the picture. Which resolution should I use?
A: Use 720p. Scaling is never good. It's better to have a game output in 720p, than in 1080i or 1080p and have the TV downscale it. This is better both picture-quality-wise, and framerate-wise.
Q: I went from a HDTV to an SDTV. Now I can't see the picture, because the PS3 is set to output in Composite or HDMI. What can I do?
A: If you press and hold the PS3's power button for 5 seconds when turning it on, it will beep, and reset the video output to Component. It will also reset the audio to be output through the A/V port (instead of optical or HDMI).
Q: Is any cheap HDMI or Component cable as good in picture quality as the expensive cables?
A: This is a subject of much discussion. In my opinion, there's no difference.
Q: Can I use a PS1 or PS2 A/V Cable (Component, SCART) cable on my PS3?
A: Yes.
Q: I'm getting a HDMI cable for my awesome new HDTV. Does all cables support 1080p and HDMI 1.3?
A: Yes, everything points to this. Although the HDMI 1.0 specs support data rates of up to 165MHz vs. HDMI 1.3's 340MHz, there should be no reason for HDMI 1.0 cables not supporting HDMI 1.3. If you're using a long HDMI cable, it might be worth looking further into, as longer cables needs to be of higher quality to support higher bitrates. With short cables (6-10 feet), there shouldn't be a problem.
Q: Can I connect two TVs to my PS3, one through HDMI, the other through the A/V port?
A: Yes, but you can't use them at the same time.
Q: Can I connect headphones to my PS3?
A: Not directly to the PS3. You'll have to connect them to your TV or amplifier, as there's no headphone jack plug in the PS3. Alternatively, you can get a set of headphones that connect through the optical output of the PS3.
Q: Why is calibrating my display device important, and how do I do it?
A: Calibrating your display device, be it a TV, monitor, or projector is imprtant, because each TV and each projector is different. Even identical devices have small variations in brightness and colour, so to maximize your enjoyment of HD viewing, it's important to calibrate. When you calibrate, you fine tune your display device, so that the colours and contrast are as near to perfect as you can get. Normally, calibrating your display device requires a special calibrating DVD, with various test patterns. Another way is to insert any movie from Sony, enter the main menu, press 4779 on your remote, and press enter. This will bring up some test patterns. Movies with the THX logo also has some calibrating stuff on their discs. Read more here: http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/lcdtv/lcd-tv-calibration.html
Q: I have connected my TV to my PS3 via a HDMI <-> DVI converter cable, but no picture is showing. Why is that?
A: Your TV's DVI input is most likely not HDCP compliant. Even though HDCP shouldn't be an issue (as it's not being used yet) the PS3 requires the input to be HDCP compliant, or there won't be a picture. You can either use a Component cable, or use a HDMI <-> VGA converter - read more here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=50722
Q: I'm using my PS3 on an LCD or Plasma screen. Sometimes text stays on the screen, as a "ghost". Is my PS3 or my TV defective?
A: No. This is a know problem with some TVs. To remove the problem, check your TV and see if it has a "Game Mode". If so, select that. Also try lowering your contrast.
Q: I have black lines on my TV and there's crackling or popping noises coming from the speakers.
A: Sounds like you have a grounding problem. In short, you need to remove grounding on your PS3 (the third plug in your power cord). Read more about it here: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=844938 (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=844938)

XMB usage and its features, Downloadable Content, Firmware, Other Operating Systems
Q: What is XMB?
A: Cross Media Bar. It is the user interface for the PS3, very similar to the one used on the PSP.
Q: Is there anything I can do to prevent my PS3 from automatically booting a game when I turn it on, and a game disc is inserted?
A: Yes. This happens when you have enabled automatic login for a user. The easiest way to disable it is to enter your System Settings and disable the Disc Auto-Start feature. If the autostart is enabled, you can circumvent this by pressing left or right on the d-pad as soon as the XMB pops up (you have about one second, before the game autostarts). Alternatively, disable automatic login (select the user, press the triangle button and disable it).
Q: When watching photos or listening to music, can I do anything else in the XMB?
A: Yes. By pressing the PS button on your controller, you can enter the XMB while your music plays on, and your picture is viewed in the background. You can browse the net via the PS3 Browser, but if you connect to the PS Store, the music stops. This goes for PS3 firmware 1.90. This might change in a future update.
Q: When downloading stuff from the PSN, can I do anything else in the XMB?
A: Yes. You have the choice to download in the background. This is only possible if you download to the PS3 HDD, not if you download to another storage device.
Q: If I buy a game from the PlayStation Store, can I play it at a friends house on his PS3? Can I share it with him?
A: Yes. The things you buy are tied to your account. You can log in on your friend's PS3 and download the game on his PS3. After you leave, he can still play the game. This can be done up to 5 times per game on different PS3 machines.
Q: I just upgraded my PS3's firmware, and now I can't use the XMB! The only thing I can do with my controller is to turn the system or controller on or off!
A: Try following these steps:
· Cut the power to your PS3 on the PS3's power switch (the one in the back) - (only do this after you put the PS3 in standby mode as normal).
· Disconnect ALL USB devices connected to your PS3, except one controller connected via the USB cable.
· Power up your PS3 via your controller (don't forget to turn on the power switch in the back ;o)
Q: I just turned on my PS3 and it updated the PS3 firmware. Where can I read about what's new?
A: In the PS3 Forums official firmware thread: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=48196 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=48196) You may also check the official PS3 site here: http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates) Please note that the PS3 website often is a day or two behind, when a new firmware is made available.
Q: Sometimes my XMB has a colour, sometimes it's black. Why?
A: The colour of your XMB is linked to the time of day and the date of the year. Try playing around with your PS3's clock and the date and see how it works.
Q: How do I pay downloadable content?
A: You'll need to register yourself on the PSN. When registered, you can add funds to a virtual wallet, and use those funds to buy stuff. You can currently use major credit cards. If you don't own a credit card, you can buy PlayStation Cards in stores and use those to add funds.
Q: Can I install other operating systems on my PS3?
A: Yes, the PS3 officially supports Linux. A guide to install Yellow Dog Linux can be found here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=60162 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=60162)
Q: Can I install Windows on my PS3?
A: Yes and no. This is not officially supports by the PS3, but reportedly, some people have done this through using PS3 Linux.
Q: Will the PS3 be able to run PC games?
A: You may be able to do so by using Linux.
Q: Is it true that when I display my photos on the PS3 with the slideshow function, it has some kind of facial recognition?
A: Yes. It will try to detect faces in your photos, and try to make picture transitions focus on the faces it finds (only in Slide Show mode).
Q: If I download something on my PS3, using my user name, will it be visible to other users on my PS3?
A: Yes. All downloaded data is accessible by all users. You can limit accessability by setting up parental controls.
Q: I connected my iPod to my PS3, and I only get a bunch of weird filenames in a lot of different folders. Can I do anything to change this?
A: I don't think there's anything you can do about that. I have the 30GB Video iPod, and that's how Apple decided to store the music. The iPod reads the ID3 tags off the songs, and displays that in the iPod browser - the files themselves are stored with those filenames. Maybe there's an option in iTunes to not convert the file names to gibberish (I don't use iTunes, so I can't check).
Some iPods however, stores the file names as the originally were - a friend of mine has a 5GB iPod (dunno the exact type), and when I browse his files, the filenames are "normal".
Q: How do I delete a game demo or a movie trailer?
A: Select the game demo or movie trailer, press the triangle button, and select delete.
Q: I installed some game data from a game, but I no longer have that game. How do I delete the game data?
A: Under the game section in the XMB, there's a game data section. Select the game data, press triangle, and select delete.
Q: When I see a picture of the PS3 store, it looks different than the PS3 store on my PS3. Why is that?
A: This is probably because you have a SDTV. Pictures of the PS3 store on the internet are normally taken from a HDTV. The reason for it being different is that SDTVs use a lower resolution than normally is used on a HDTV. The PS3 store lookes different on widescreen TVs too.
Q: Some of the movies I downloaded or transferred from my PC have a 15 sec. preview running, when I browse through my video files on the XMB. Can I do this to all my movies?
A: Yes. Play the movie, and when you get to the point you want the preview to start as, pause it. Press triangle, and select the "Change Icon" option.
Q: Some of the songs I ripped on my PS3 or transferred from my PC have the album's cover showing, when I browse through my audio files on the XMB. Can I do this to all my music?
A: Yes. When the PS3 rips a CD for you, it tries to get the album art through the internet (it recognises what album you're ripping and contacts a databse for the album art). Most times it finds the correct one. If it can't find it, or has found the wrong one, you'll have to change it yourself. Personally, I use MediaMonkey to do this - it works ver well and it's got a free version http://www.mediamonkey.com/ (http://www.mediamonkey.com/). Other programs, such as iTunes also has this option.
Alternatively, you can transfer the album art as a picture to your PS3. Select the album folder (not the individual tunes), press Triangle and select Information. From there, you can use any picture on your PS3 as album art. This will affect all songs in that folder.
Q: How do I enter text onto the PS3 without a USB keyboard?
A: You can enter text with your controller on a cellphone-style user interface. From PS3 firmware 1.60, you can also get an on-screen keyboard, resembling a real keyboard.
Q: In the XMB, I use my USB keyboard to browse through the menus. How can I emulate the Sixaxis buttons?
A: F1 = Triangle button. F2 = Square button. Return = X button, Esc = Circle button.
Q: How do I update my PS3's firmware?
A: You can do this three ways:
1) Connecting your PS3 to the internet and upgrading it directly.
2) Use your PC to download the update file, put it on an external storage device (external HDD, memory stick, CD-ROM or DVD/ROM), and update the PS3 from that.
3) Some games will have a firmware upgrade on the disc, and it will require you to upgrade your PS3 to play the game, if the firmware on the disc is newer than the one installed on your PS3.
If you update using a a PC and a portable storage device, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”. Copy the update file to this folder.
Read more here: http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates)
Q: I am getting an error when I try updating my PS3's firmware. Is there anything I can do?
A: Some people have made reports that their PS3 won't update before they remove all USB devices connected to the PS3, and Sony recommends that you remove all USB devices during an update - try doing just that.
Q: Where can I download the firmware upgrades on my PC?
A: From these two sites:
US: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/default.html (http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates/default.html)
Europe: http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item60697/Download-now/ (http://uk.playstation.com/help-support/ps3/guides/detail/item60697/Download-now/)
If you update using a a PC and a portable storage device, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”. Copy the update file to this folder.
Please note that you need to stick to the firmware made for your PS3's region. This means, for example, that if you have a PS3 bought in the US, but it's used in the UK, you will need the US firmware, NOT the UK one. Here's a quote from the official Sony website (same URL as the US firmware site above):
"This update is for customers who own PS3™ systems sold in North America. DO NOT update your PS3™ system through this Web site if you purchased your system outside North America. There is no guarantee of proper operation with other models sold outside North America."
Q: What is Home?
A: Home was announced March 8, at GDC 2007. In short, it's a virtual world where PSN users can create an avatar, and meet up. Each user will get a personal space, an "apartment", assigned to his PSN ID, and he can decorate this in any way he feels like. Other users can be invited to your apartment, and you can show them movies and pictures off of your PS3's HDD. You'll also be able to join online game, and much much more. To go into more detail about PS Home is beyond the scope of this FAQ, but for more information, check out this thread: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=61468 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=61468)
Q: What's this Cure for Cancer stuff I've been hearing about (Folding@Home)?
A: You're thinking of the Folding@Home project, which is enabled in PS3 firmware 1.60. Basically it's a program that runs in the background, while your PS3 is not doing anything (ie when you're browsing through the XMB). It helps scientists do some massive calculations on something called "Protein Folding", you calculate a small part of a bigger problem, and send your results to Stanford Univeristy. The idea is that thousands of small calculated parts will amount to a substantial amount. The more the merrier! Read more here: http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html (http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html) and here: http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/ (http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/)
PS3 Forums have their own Folding@Home Team you can join - read more here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=63196 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=63196)
Q: I'm running Folding@Home on my PC as well as on the PS3. Can I combine the results under the same username/team?
A: Yes - just type in the exact same username and team number in every PC and PS3 you got the Folding@Home client running on, and your results will accumulate.
Q: I just finished a WU in Folding@Home, but the result isn't showing in my user statistics. Why is that?
A: Patience, young Padawan. It can take a few hours for the result to show up on your stats. Play a game and check in later ;o) Some people have reported that finished WUs doesn't always get uploaded to the server, but this hasn't been confirmed yet.
Q: When I scan my friends list, some of them have a small bubble popping up with a comment. How do I do that?
A: In your friends list, select your avatar, press the Triangle button, and select "Comment".
Q: If I press Triangle over a friend in my friends list, select "Profile", there's an "About Me"-field listed. How do I edit mine?
A: In your friends list, select your avatar, enter Account Management. When you get to the "Select an avatar"-screen, select "Use current avatar", and you'll then be able to edit your "About Me"-field.

Game Related Questions, Backwards Compability
Q: Will my username be the same in all games?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I backup my game saves, and how? Can I use them on my friend's PS3?
A: Yes. The PS3 has an option in the XMB to backup your games saves. (Under Games, Saved Game Data Utility) You decide the destination (USB HDD, memory stick). You can transfer the saves onto your friend's PS3.
Q: Can I play music off of my PS3 HDD while playing a game?
A: This is currently not possible (PS3 firmware 1.54).
Q: Can I use my USB mouse and keyboard to play games?
A: See the "PS3 Controller, Bluetooth, and External Devices" section.
Q: Will the PS3 make PS2 load times faster?
A: No.
Q: Can I play multi-disc PS1 and PS2 games on my PS3?
A: Yes. As long as the game is backwards compatible with the PS3, the game will work fine. It being multi-disc is no different on the PS3 than the PS1 or PS2.
Q: Will PS1/PS2 games have the option of saving to the PS3 HDD?
A: Yes. You make a virtual memory card on your PS3 HDD.
Q: How do I get my PS1 or PS2 games to work on my PS3?
A: Go to the PlayStation Store, and download the PS2 System Software. You will also need to create a virtual PS2 Memory Card on your PS3. Finally, to use saves on a PS2 Memory Card, you'll need a PS3 Memory Card Adapter.
Q: Will the PS3 make my PS1 and PS2 game run better?
A: No, they'll run the same. The PS3 has the ability to smoothen and upsacle the picture. Do this by selecting the options in Settings -> Game Settings.
Q: Being the PS3 games are not region coded, does this mean PS3 can play PS1 and PS2 games from anywhere in the world?
A: No. PS1 and PS2 games are still subject to the same region codes as found on the original PS1 and PS2 systems.
Q: Will the PS3 be compatible with ALL PS1/PS2 games?
A: No. If you live in the US, you can check out individual titles here: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus) European and Australian users can check them out here: http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/ (http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/)
Q: I heard that the European PS3, and the new US/Japan models won't play PS1/PS2 games at all! Is this true?
A: No. What happened is that Sony announced, that they're redesigning the PS3, removing some PS2 components. Instead of using hardware emulation to play PS1 and PS2 games, the PS3 will now use software emulation. In the announcement, Sony mentioned that this might affect the number of compatible games, and that Sony didn't put as much focus on backwards compability. Some parts of the internet community read this as Sony gave up on supporting PS1 and PS2 games on the PS3, which isn't true.
Q: Is there achievements in PS3 games, like on XBox Live?
A: Currently, no. Sony has announced that they will make something like this available, called trophies. Check this thread out for more info: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=61468 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=61468)
Q: Can I play online with people all over the world or is it locked to my region (USA, Japan, Europe, etc.)?
A: This varies from game to game.
Q: Will PS1 & PS2 games be upscaled & presented in HD for gameplay?
A: No.
Q: Can I copy PS2 saves from my hard drive onto a PS2 memory stick?
A: No.
Q: Can I turn off the motion sensor on the Sixaxis, if I want to control my game by using the sticks instead?
A: This varies from game to game. Most games support this.
Q: Why does games install stuff on my HDD, and what happens if I deny this?
A: They do this to speed up the loading process, reducing the load times. Some games allows you to choose to install or not. If you choose not to install, the game will work just as well, but it just takes a bit longer to load.
Q: I have some games that installed considerable amounts of data on my PS3 HDD. I don't own/play them anymore. Can I erase the data?
A: Yes. in the XMB, go to Game -> Game Data Utility. Select the game data you'd like to uninstall, press Triangle and delete it. This does not delete your game saves. You can always reinstall the game data.
Q: I have some games that I no longer own/play. I have several saves that I no longer need. Can I erase the data?
A: Yes. in the XMB, go to Game -> Saved Data Utility. Select the game save you'd like to delete, press Triangle and delete it.

As Zaldin said, the "Ask a Question" sticky is over 160 pages long. Have you ever tried finding an answer in that thread?
Here you have the most common questions laid out in a nice way. This thread is not meant as a substitute for the Ask a Question thread, but as an "index" to it - listing the most common questions found on these boards, and their answers.
So in answer you your question: I *do* find there's a need for this thread.

hey, thanks for makin this thread
i have a question
"Q: If I buy a game from the PlayStation Store, can I play it at a friends house on his PS3? Can I share it with him?
A: Yes. The things you buy are tied to your account. You can log in on your friend's PS3 and download the game on hs PS3. After you leave, he can still play the came. This can be done up to 5 times on different PS3 machines."
Does that mean that you can only download games on different ps3s 5 times all together, or 5 times for each game?
Fangrim
March 22nd, 2007, 01:55 AM
You can do this 5 times per game.
Corrected the FAQ.

Q: What kind of headset do I need to use online chat?
A: You'll need a Bluetooth headset, like the ones used for cell phones. There have been reports of some Bluetooth headsets not being fully compatible with the PS3.
You make it sound like you can only use bluetooth headset for on-line and not USB one.
Q: Can I connect a PS/2 keyboard to my PS3?
A: Not directly, as the PS3 doesn't have a PS/2 port. PS/2-USB converters are available though, but I have no idea if they work on the PS3.
I can confirm that the PS/2-USB converters work because I have used one, so you can fix this question.
Could you add answer to one more question? (And maybe change the wording)
Q: How to access the buttons of the PS3 controller on a regular USB Keyboard
A:F1 on keyboard -> Triangle on controller, ESC on keboard -> which ever button is set to cancel on the controller. This is how it works in XMB
Anyway, great thread.

Great FAQ
Here's a question I desperately need an answer to as I will get my PS3 tomorrow...
I live in Finland but would like to use the PS3's online features in English so
Do I have to register in the UK or can I register in Finalnd and choose English language for PS Store, online gaming, home when it comes, etc?
I'm sure that many English mother tongue PS3 owners in Europe would like to know the answer.
My worry is that either I register in Finland and can't use English or that I register in the UK and my connection sucks because of the distance!
Can I change my registration or register in multiple countries?
Thanks for any advice you might have.
Fangrim
March 22nd, 2007, 03:18 PM
You can register in any country you want, and still choose whatever language you want for your XMB.
The PS Store is localized (ie. it shows the price in your local currency), but the language is English (I have selected English as my XMB language).
Karhu
March 22nd, 2007, 03:37 PM
Cool - so everything I see on my XMB and Online should be in English right?

March 22nd, 2007, 03:55 PM
Yep. The only thing I found was Danish is that the currency is in dkr instead of dollars (I have both a Danish and a US account).
Oh, there's more content in the US store compared to the EU one.

Revision 4 is now up.
Added the following:
Q: I just turned on my PS3 and it updated the PS3 firmware. Where can I read about what's new?
A: In the PS3 Forums official firmware thread: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=48196 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=48196) You may also check the official PS3 site here: http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates)
Q: Will replacing my internal PS3 HDD ruin my PS3 warranty?
A: No. Sony offers detailed instructions on how to exchange the internal HDD, as long as you follow those, your warranty is intact.
Edited the following:
Q: In the XMB, I use my USB keyboard to browse through the menus. How can I emulate the Sixaxis buttons?
A: F1 = Triangle button. F2 = Square button. Return = X button, Esc = Circle button.
Q: Which Bluetooth headset should I buy?
A: That question is beyond the scope of this FAQ. Check out this thread for inspiration: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=42561 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=42561)
Added "Firmware" to the "XMB usage and its features, Downloadable Content, Other Operating Systems" section.

Q: What audio formats can be played on the PS3?
A: Memory Stick Audio Format(ATRAC)
MP3(MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3)
MP4(MPEG-4 AAC)
WAVE(Linear PCM)
Technically, more can be played using Linux, but the above mentioned are the ones inherently supported by the PS3.Wasn't WMA added in the 1.6 update? I haven't tested WMA to know for sure.

Revision 5 changes and additions:
Edited the following entries:
Q: What is HDCP?
A: High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection. In short it's a copy protection for High Definition content, such as Blu-ray and HD-DVD movies. For the PS3 to be able to show a picture via HDMI (or DVI through a converter cable), the TV or monitor needs to be HDCP-compliant. HD-TVs are HDCP-compliant, most PC monitors aren't.
Q: What audio formats can be played on the PS3?
A: Memory Stick Audio Format(ATRAC)
MP3(MPEG-1/2 Audio Layer 3)
MP4(MPEG-4 AAC)
WAVE(Linear PCM)
WMA
Added the following entries:
Q: I need my PS3 manual, but I don't have access to it at the moment. Can I find it online?
A: Yes.
PS3 System Software User's Guide here: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/index.html (http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/index.html)
PS3 Using Your PS3 Guide here: http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/Using (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/Using)
PS3 Safety and Support Guide here: http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/frame_safety.html (http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/frame_safety.html)
Play a game and check in later ;o)
You can either use a Component cable, or use a HDMI <-> VGA converter - read more here: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=50722 (http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=50722)
Q: I am getting an error when I try updating my PS3's firmware. Is there anything I can do?
A: Some people have made reports that their PS3 won't update before they remove all USB devices connected to the PS3, and Sony recommends that you remove all USB devices during an update- Try doing just that.
I don't know the Japanese site URL, and if there's any other region-based sites - anyone?
Moved this to the "XMB usage and its features, Downloadable Content, Firmware, Other Operating Systems" section and added some additional info:
Q: How do I update my PS3's firmware?
A: You can do this three ways:
1) Connecting your PS3 to the internet and upgrading it directly.
2) Use your PC to download the update file, put it on an external storage device (external HDD, memory stick, CD-ROM or DVD/ROM), and update the PS3 from that.
3) Some games will have a firmware upgrade on the disc, and it will require you to upgrade your PS3 to play the game, if the firmware on the disc is newer than the one installed on your PS3.
Read more here: http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates (http://www.us.playstation.com/ps3/network/updates)
If you update using a a PC and a portable storage device, create a folder named “PS3” on the storage media or USB device. Within the PS3 folder, create a folder named “UPDATE”. Copy the update file to this folder.

I hope someone can help me out with a little issue I have. My TV supports 480P, 720P, and 1080i resolutions and all of these are checked in the display options. The issue that I have is that all text in the XMB looks very tiny because the system chose to use 1080i as default. The text looks "normal" if I only check the 480P in the display options, but will this also be the resolution for games and movies? Is there any way to have bigger/normal text in the XMB? Thank you in advance :)!!

Sorry to hear that oasis. Have you tried switching off the PS3 and then holding the power button down for about 5 seconds - just to reset the picture format. I doubt that's going to work but for a 5 second activity it's at least worth a try.
One other thing. Are you sure it's not the TV that is having the problem? Are you able to view other sources through the TV? Do you still get the sound from the PS3 when it fires up?

Added the following entries:
Q: What does the orange and green lights next to the USB slots mean?
A: The yellow indicates that the PS3 is accessing the internal HDD, the green indicates that the PS3 is accessing the internet through Wi-Fi or cable.
Q: I have black lines on my TV and there's crackling or popping noises coming from the speakers.
A: Sounds like you have a grounding problem. In short, you need to remove grounding on your PS3 (the third plug in your power cord). Read more about it here: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=844938 (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=844938)
Edited the following entries:
Q: Can I replace my Sixaxis battery?
A: Yes, but it's not officially supported. Read more here: http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/safety_support/additional_info.html#wireless%20battery (http://www.us.playstation.com/content/sites/176/info/safety_support/additional_info.html#wireless%20battery) Please note that the link only provides instructions on how to remove the battery. Since the battery is connected to the Sixaxis via a standard plug, you can replace it, but it's not officially supported or endorsed by Sony.
Q: When downloading stuff from the PSN, can I do anything else in the XMB?
A: Yes. You can queue up to 6 downloads that will download in the background, while you're in the XMB. Background downloading will stop if you run a program.

Fangrim, it seems that the HDMI issues still exist with some TV's even after updating to 1.60. I'm having issues with mine right now, actually JVC used to be able to help people, but since the patch(which changed how some settings are chosen), they don't even know what to do.

Again, thanks to everyone who contributed!
Added the following entries:
Q: I'm using a wireless internet connection on my PS3. How do I check my signal strength?
A: In the XMB, go to Settings -> Network Settings -> Connection Status.
Q: Can I use any USB <-> Mini USB cord to charge my controller, or does it have to be the one supplied wth the PS3?
A: You can use any cord, as long as the plugs fit.
Q: Can I charge my Sixaxis on my PC or any other USB device than the PS3?
A: I tried charging the Sixaxis on my PS3, and with my iPod wall charger, and none of them worked. The 4 connection lights on the pad didn't flash as they do on the PS3. You might be able to use some USB devices, but I haven't been able to confirm this. So far, the answer is no.
Q: Can I play multi-disc PS1 and PS2 games on my PS3?
A: Yes. As long as the game is backwards compatible with the PS3, the game will work fine. It being multi-disc is no different on the PS3 than the PS1 or PS2.
Q: I'm planning on getting a Wi-Fi Max for my PS3. Will a DS or PSP Wi-Fi Max work on my PS3?
A: Yes. The various Wi-Fi Max models are essentially the same.
Q: Why does games install stuff on my HDD, and what happens if I deny this?
A: They do this to speed up the loading process, reducing the load times. Some games allows you to choose to install or not. If you choose not to install, the game will work just as well, but it just takes a bit longer to load.
Edited the following entries:
Q: Can I connect headphones to my PS3?
A: Not directly to the PS3. You'll have to connect them to your TV or amplifier, as there's no headphone jack plug in the PS3. Alternatively, you can get a set of headphones that connect through the optical output of the PS3.
Component). There's a debate going about whether HDMI is better than Component, with technical arguments going back and forth. Ultimately it's a matter of personal preference. Personally, I like Component better.

Nice FAQ!
I found some minor errors though.
The fact is that a GB is always 10^9 byte. What you are referring to is a GiB which is 2^30.
The gibibyte is closely related to the gigabyte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte), which can either be an (inaccurate) synonym for gibibyte, or refer to 109 bytes = 1,000,000,000 bytes, depending on context (see binary prefix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_prefix)).
Also, those 0.88GB you are speaking of (MBR and such) are minimal in size and rarely exceed 1-2MB
Actually, You dont need to support HDCP to be able to call a TV for HD. When it has the mark "HD-Ready" though, you need it.
Q: Can the PS3 contract viruses?
A: Technically yes, but no reports have been made of this happening yet.
I'm having trouble seeing this possible since the XMB only launches signed programs. Sure, exploitations of the browser or something might be fully possible but perhaps you can mention that it's not like Windows or something? To not make people to go crazy :)
Again, Nice work!

Well, there's lots of dispute regarding what a GB really is, what I tried to illustrate is the difference between what a HDD manufacturer calls a GB and Sony calls a GB. In any case, I try not to get too technical about stuff in this FAQ
What the 0.88 GB is used for exactly, I have no idea of - could be MBR, could be that Sony rounds the figure down - in any case, MBR is as good an explanation as any ;o)
I bet that at some time, some people will figure out how to run unsigned programs, or find a way to trick the PS3 that a program is signed. Also, there's a possibility for people to introduce this via Linux (albeit highly unlikely). I'll expand upon this in the next revision.
You're right about the HD stamp is not equal to DHCP compliant. I'll correct this in the next revision.
Thanks for your input, highly appreciated.

You're not taking into account that the PS3 is capable of running other operating systems. When doing this, it is just a shiny black PC and can get viruses just as easily as any other PC.

Well, that would imply that the Virus installs an OtherOS firmware, then boots it up and such. Would be a pretty harmless and pointless virus. And since it's outside the XMB I wouldn't call it a virus for PS3 but more a generic PPC virus

A: MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
1.60 firmware also adds the following video formats:(from the release notes)
Motion JPEG and AVCHD (.m2ts) have been added as playable formats.
Q: What's the best TV for my PS3?
A: I can't answer you ;o) Go for what you like and can afford. You can also check out this thread: http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=16829
European owners: If your TV Has the HDReady logo, it will support at least 720p and 1080i, along with DVI or HDMI. A TV of this specification will work well with the PS3.

Revision 8 - 200 Q&A Barrier reached!
Thanks everyone!
Added the following entries:
Q: How do I get my PS1 or PS2 games to work on my PS3?
A: Go to the PlayStation Store, and download the PS2 System Software. You will also need to create a virtual PS2 Memory Card on your PS3. Finally, to use saves on a PS2 Memory Card, you'll need a PS3 Memory Card Adapter.
Q: Can I connect my Bluetooth phone to the PS3?
A: Nope.
Q: If I download a PSP game onto my PS3, can I play it on the PS3?
A: No, you'll still need a PSP to do so. Furthermore, you'll need to have the PSP connected to your PS3 via Wi-Fi.
Q: When I scan my friends list, some of them have a small bubble popping up with a comment. How do I do that?
A: In your friends list, select your avatar, press the Triangle button, and select "Comment".
Q: If I press Triangle over a friend in my friends list, select "Prifile", there's an "About Me"-field listed. How do I edit mine?
A: In your friends list, select your avatar, enter Account Management. When you get to the "Select an avatar"-screen, select "Use current avatar", and you'll then be able to edit your "About Me"-field.
Edited the following entries:
Q: Can the PS3 contract a virus or other unwanted malign software?
A: Technically yes, but no reports have been made of this happening yet. It's very unlikely that a virus will be made for the PS3, as the PS3 only runs signed code (programs that have been approved by Sony).

It's more important to have a reliable broadband connection than a faster speed. A stable connection will be great for online gaming, a faster connection will give you quicker download for demos etc. I use a 2Mb connection networked alongside a pc, 2 laptops and a pda all sharing the connection, and there are no problems whatsoever.

Finally, the Sixaxis has motion sensing, it is capable of sensing motion in six degrees: up, down, left, right, forward, and backward.
Wouldn't it be three degrees then? The motion in three dimensional space refer to moving in three perpendicular axes (forward/backward, up/down, left/right). The Sixaxias can detect the rotation in three perpendicular axes (yaw, pitch, roll). As the movement along each of the three axes is independent of each other and independent of the rotation about any of these axes, the motion indeed has six degrees of freedom.
