Here are 3 movies that I own, personally love to bits..... and are important to my collection. They are mostly lesser known, if you want to list some, list only a few at a time please, give some information and or pics or links about the movies. Describe it a bit maybe too, this was some of us can view some different stuff we have missed out on. I believe that most Hollywood movies = crap in the last 15 years. There are many exceptions, but most hold true to this idea of crap. These films really speak to me, and I just love them so much, Im a fan of great stories and good camera work.... the story comes first, everything else is filler in my eyes, I would hope someone would watch these!!

Anyway, on with my top 3 unknown or lesser known movies you should check out!

01. Aftermath:
Beautiful, cinematic, shocking, scary, original..... haunting. This is NOT your typical crap fest like the SAW series, it is a true art form..... its something that SAW fans would consider "over the line" anyday and all day. This is not a movie for the faint of heart. If you want something different, then you want this... Aftermath is a short horror film by the Spanish director Nacho Cedra made in 1994. It follows a pair of morticians performing graphic autopsies on a pair of corpses. After one leaves for the night, the second begins working on a third body, a young woman killed in a car crash. He first mutilates the corpse, then performs a number of sexual acts upon it while taking photographs. After he finishes he removes the woman's heart and completes the autopsy, then takes her heart home and blends it into a fine pulp. The film ends as he feeds his dog the heart while he relaxes and watches TV. There is no spoken dialogue for the duration of the film. The acts he commits are so vile, and it does not shy away at all, it shows it all, sex with a knife, mutilation, "loving and caressing moment between the mortician and a corpse", it is not a CHEAP thrill or shock fest like youd expect, it is shot in such a cinematic and artistic way, he has great talent with this film and it really shows. The shots are just wonderful and any artsy person would take note in the first 2 minutes that this movie is a wonder to the eyes in more ways than 1.

These screen shots do the film no justice and are NOT EVEN a small taste of what lies in store for someone when they watch it, its ultra realistic and gritty. Go see if you can download it or watch it, you CANT rent it. You can buy it at http://www.unearthedfilms.com/

02. Irreversible:
It has been called one of the most controversial films in many years, Without giving too much away - Two men, Marcus (played by Vincent Cassel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vincent_Cassel)) and Pierre (played by Albert Dupontel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Dupontel)), are led out of a gay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexual) sex club (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nightclub), "Club Rectum", by police (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police). Earlier that evening, they arrived at the club in a frantic search for a pimp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pimp) nicknamed "Le Tenia" (literally: "The Tapeworm"). Marcus picked a fight with a man, believing him to be Le Tenia. When Marcus had his arm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arm) broken in the fight and was then about to be raped, his friend Pierre rescued him by bludgeoning his attacker to death using a fire extinguisher, also causing his face to split open. This killing is depicted graphically on camera, and is one of two controversial sequences in the film.

In a succession of scenes, we learn that Marcus and Pierre went in search of Le Tenia after questioning several prostitutes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitute). They were aided in their search by two men who promised to exchange information about Le Tenia for money (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money), so that the two could exact revenge. It is further disclosed that Le Tenia brutally anally raped (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape) and beat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violent_crime) Marcus's girlfriend Alex (played by Monica Bellucci (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monica_Bellucci)), who is also the ex-girlfriend of Pierre. The rape takes place when Alex encounters Le Tenia beating a prostitute in a pedestrian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedestrian) underpass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underpass).

The rape itself, the film's other controversial scene, is shown in a single unbroken take lasting nine minutes. After the rape scene, it also becomes clear that Pierre and Marcus attacked the wrong man: Le Tenia was standing right next to the man who was killed. In the background of the rape scene, at the entrance to the underpass in which it takes place, a figure appears, watches briefly and then walks away leaving the attack to continue.

The film then delves into the actions that preceded the event. We see Alex, Marcus and Pierre at a party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Party). Alex and Marcus are apparently divided over Marcus' uninhibited use of cocaine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine) and alcohol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol). Earlier scenes reveal the real divisions between Marcus and Pierre: Alex left Pierre, a staid and sexually reserved philosophy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy) professor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor), for the more footloose and sexually uninhibited Marcus. The last scene of the film shows Marcus and Alex rising from bed to prepare for the party, with Alex discovering she is pregnant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy) whilst Marcus is out buying wine.
The film ends with a shot of Alex reading in a park surrounded by children (accompanied by Beethoven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_van_Beethoven)'s 7th Symphony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._7_%28Beethoven%29)), giving way to a strobe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strobe_light) effect and a roaring sound that is reminiscent of the film running out of the projector gate. A final title card reads: "LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT" ("Time Destroys All Things").

I cant really show what happens in pictures, im sure it would get shut down, so Ill show the cover:

03. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.
This movie is BRILLIANT, so well done, its not trying to be anything... it is what it is. The story is spell binding and really takes you in, it just pours out like water on the screen.... so smooth and slick, I love this movie VERY much, its not your average film. I dont want to give too much away about it at all, literally nothing because I encourage others to see it so often and they always have some sort of experience with it.... watch this movie if you like good movies that stray away from the crappy norm.

Here is the Wiki article about it if you want to spoil it for yourself:

Great thread.

Twin peaks rocks.
How about The Tin Drum, a very cool, if somewhat deep, German flick.
Plenty of silly gory horrors like Profondo Rosso etc.
Thriller: A Cruel Picture
Requiem for a Dream, pretty well known but worth a mention.
Silly Sci Fi's like The Green Slime
El Topo and The Holy Mountain
Old Godzilla-esque Japanese flicks like Infra-Man

I could probably reel off a lot more by looking at my DVD collection, but can't be bothered to get up :p

Ultimate Versus. = The penultimate Kung -fu live action anime insanity. Zombies, guns, swordfights, demons, and the most insane kung fu action you can imagine.

It's a cult movie(like Army of Darkness), and it has a bizarre sense of humor, but if you can find this movie check it out!

(Try to get the unrated 'Ultimate' Edition as it's much better than the original cut version.

Some of my favortie less seen movies are:

Brick:
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/3695/brickposter4ax2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This is a film I have been highly anticipating for over a year. After first hitting the festival circuit in January of 2005 it went through the cycles, finally getting a stateside limited release at the end of March 2006. Buffalo, I ask you now to open your eyes to a masterpiece of cinema as Brick finally debuts at the Amherst Dipson.

Brick is a not a film as much as a symphony where each instrument is tuned to the beat of the conductor. Each frame is carefully orchestrated and composed to perfection. The dialogue is metered and spoken with a contemporary Shakespearean beat. Writer/Director Rian Johnson has created poetry with his first feature length film. It may be tough to understand the lingo and overall speech used, but as the film advances you begin to know the characters and the words just make complete sense.

It as a great movie... case and point!

Four rooms:
http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/8407/fourroomsus3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

"Four Rooms" is an anthology film with four 'episodes' about a fading hotel on News Years Eve, and with a quirky bellhop named Ted (Tim Roth) and his misadventures on this one crazy night. The first episode entitled "The Missing Ingredient" is about a group of witches staying in the hotel who need some sperm in order to complete a spell. And guess who knocks on the door...Ted the bellhop! The next episode, "The Wrong Man" is a shorter episode about Ted getting mistaken for another man. This is certainly the strangest of the episodes. Then next comes the hilarious "The Misbehavers". Ted is asked to babysit two kids of a Mexican gangster (Antonio Banderas in a parody of himself), and how everything possible can go wrong. And the final episode, "The Man From Hollywood" (the best) is directed by Quentin Tarantino. It is about a ****y Hollywood new-comer (Tarantino also in a parody of himself) who rents out the Penthouse for New Years Eve, and then plays a dangerous game that ends the film in a very funny way.

Each room directed by a different director (should speak for itself):

Allison Anders
Alexandre Rockwell
Robert Rodriguez
Quentin Tarantino

And Tarantino is a remake of an old Hitch**** scene, its awesome!

I can list more if people are interested!

Well, I do have one sleeper hit in my collection.

25th Hour, directed by Spike Lee. This film was just fantastic, following a drug dealer on his last 24 hours before he goes to prison. The story just sucked you in and never let go.

Edward Norton plays Monty, a harmless drug dealer who has 24 hours of freedom before serving a seven-year jail sentence. Nervous, confused, and terrified, Monty turns to his closest friends for support: Frank Slattery (Barry Pepper), a ****y stock broker who resents Monty for throwing his life away; Jakob Elinsky (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a hapless high school teacher who is attracted to one of his students (Anna Paquin); and Monty's heartbroken father (Brian Cox), who blames himself for Monty's demise. And then there is Naturelle (Rosario Dawson), Monty's beautiful girlfriend, who may or may not be guilty of ratting Monty out to the cops. Monty spends his last day trying to ignore the inevitability of time, but everyone and everything only reminds him of the bleak, unpromising days that lay ahead.

It's a superb movie, with Spike Lee's magic touch.

Coldblooded staring Jason Priestley

Cosmo (Priestley), an affectless mob bookie who lives in the basement of a retirement home, is promoted to hitman. He learns his new trade from Steve, a seasoned killer. He falls in love with a yoga teacher, Jasmine, and must figure out a way to leave the mob so they can be together.

Sounds cheezy but it was a pretty cool movie.

Hard-Boiled (Laat sau sen taan) starring Yun-Fat Chow (Chow Yun Fat)

Good old school Chinese police story. Mobsters are smuggling guns into Hong Kong. The police orchestrate a raid at a teahouse where the ace detective loses his partner. Meanwhile, the two main gun smugglers are having a war over territoriality, and a young new gun is enlisted to wipe out informants and overcome barriers to growth. The detective, acting from inside sources gets closer to the ring leaders, and eventually must work directly with the inside man.

Once were warriors. Devastatingly beautiful, harsh, and true.

VERY EXTREME CONTENT

Here is a review I wrote on it for IMDB

There are films where you can see extensive carnage and it doesn't move you. This is a film where you see a man hit his wife and it hits you in the gut like you're being hit yourself. An excellent depiction of the impact of anger and violence on the members of a poor family. In this case, they happen to be Maoris living in New Zealand. The father dominates the family because he is so powerless in the other facets of his life. He's addicted to boozing and carousing and the only way he can really express himself is with his fists. The wife fights back, but can be beaten into submission. But she's also allowed herself to be seduced by the boozy lifestyle and fears responsibility. The center of the family is the oldest daughter (13), who is really the only one who can communicate with all the other members. The boys are either lost in life or lost in their own rage. The youngest daughter is simply too small and clings to her sister. It takes a tragedy to allow some of these individuals to reach out for each other and try to re-create a form of family life. A very powerful film, not for the faint of heart.

I really wanted to see Pan's Labyrinth at the cinema but it seems it has been and gone without me knowing. I'll definitely rent it out though.

I highly recommend Dead Man's Shoes. It's a tale of brutal revenge, starring a little known actor called Paddy Considine, who systematically picks off one by one, a group of local bullies that once traumatised his younger brother. It's cleverly filmed, perspectives taken from both the hunter and the hunted. One of my favourite British independant films.

Its pretty much only intended for the Mexican Audiance ,but its simply.. wow.

It follows this hobo in his search to make it, while the Governmnet is trying to decrease unemployment and homeless population. Eventually deciding to just let them all die.

One reason I enjoy films so much is due to the cinematography and direction. The last film I watched which had a good example of this was Blood Diamond. Views of Mozambique, Sierra Leone, Cape Town and the S. Africa's east coast were incredible, and it made me want to go a visit.

Also, Richard Sagawa is an absolutely hilarious character.

That movie sounds nuts, I just might like it!

Well I'll let you know tomorrow, unless something crazy happens tonight...

is "Ghost World" a keeper or just a rent?

Ghost World is one of those films you either love/hate or just don't get. I'd suggest renting it out and if you find it's your kind of film then you can buy it later.

So...Art School Confidential tell me all I need to know!:D

Ghost world will be a Netflix, so if I don't like I wont cry about it...

Ok, Art School Confidential is a great movie and I almost watch it twice in a row... I will now attempt to explain my views without giving any spoilers...

It seemed like it was a true stab at society as a whole touching on all aspects prevelant in the media today; homosexual tendencies, popularity, stereotypes, death, life, exploration, etc (to name a few). All this wrapped up in two hours with an underlying horror movie twists... It is set at an Art School, but I am sure you figured that out...

If you are a movie buff, it would be safe to buy, b/c it does have replay value, as well as, becoming a movie you would want to share with others...

Want me to say more?

Oh, I would rate it 9/10 and guess what, Devil's Backbone should be in my mailbox right now!

Anyway, it is a must see for movie fans and has alot, if you look at it deep enough!

Well if you enjoy 'european' films 'Cache (Hidden)' is excellent. Its so....stilll and slow, it takes ages for things to happen. It keeps you an edgy sort of relaxed and BANG, something big happens like a Jack-In-The-Box. Its slightly disturbing (I can't tell you why, it'd ruin the film). Amelie is also great, there is nothing quite like it. These two films are in French (la langue d'amour n'es pas?). Earthquake is a classic disater flick based in L.A. I watched it recently and it still stands up well. BTW Rules of Attraction is the best film I have ever seen. Period. Watch or regret it.

P.S Someone reccomended Sev7en, its EXCELLENT but requires a strong stomach.

Howl's Moving Castle blew me away. I really loved this film, Hayao Miyazaki is a legend in his own right. I knew what to expect when it comes to Studio Ghibli films, but they never cease to astonish me at how creative the world/characters/script are. The fire demon Calcifer stole the show for me, he was one of my favourite characters. A definate 9/10 for HMC, always room for improvement!

I've seen a few of those listed, namely My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke and he critically acclaimed Spirited Away (which is one of my favourite films). I've also seen Pom Poko which is part of the Studio Ghibli collection, directed by Isao Takahata. I think Spirited Away really put Hayao Miyazaki's work on the map over in Europe, I don't know about the rest of the world. But they've become quite popular now.

It's certainly worth seeing Howl's Moving Castle, I really enjoyed it. Nearly on par with Spirited Away, the story certainly has more depth but visually Spirited Away is an eye melter and superior to HMC.

The entire Evil Dead Trilogy may possibly be the best group of films ever created. Not only because of comedy, horror, and gore (the three essentials for a good horror film), but from a filmmaker's standpoint, they are VERY interesting to watch.

Some of those montogue scenes where Bruce/Ash is going crazy because of the Spirits Of The Book are pure gold. If anyone can find the Book Of The Dead editions, get them. They look very cool.

http://www.amazon.com/Evil-Dead-Book-Collection/dp/B000AQKU6I/sr=8-1/qid=1171324951/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-6297661-5717531?ie=UTF8&s=dvd

I got mine for only $55 at Best Buy. The bonus features on the first film are especially good. The commentary on Evil Dead II is possibly my favorite of all time.
