Request: PS3Portal.com Game Event(s) Header(s)

This is a request to any of the PS3Forums.com Design Squad.

I am looking for design squad member(s) who have time to create a few eye-catching event headers for PS3Portal.com. The event headers will act as replacements for the current event headers but we are also looking for a few new ones for the up 'n coming events like E3 2006.

About the Event Headers:

Event headers are used for every event specific article at PS3Portal.com. Currently the headers we are using were made by me and I don't think they are particularly appealing. IGNs artists came up with this header: http://media.ign.com/ign/images/gdc/2006/gdc_header_article_2006.gif

It would be extremely appreciated if any Design Squad members could have a crack at working on a few replacement images for GDC 2006/Sony Business Brieifng/E3 2006.

Obviously if the PS3Portal.com team chose your image(s) your event headers will be viewed by hundreds of thousands of gamers over time (especially around E3) which surely must be a good thing for any aspiring graphic designer!

The width must be 394 pixels but I will leave the height up to the designer(s).

Out of these I like the Sony Business Briefing March 2006 article the most. I think the event images could do with ‘PS3Portal Coverage of…’ or PS3Portal.com GDC 06 Coverage’ tagline. Also a congruent theme may be a good thing if you are making more than one.

I guess it can't hurt. Although any DS members who have time to submit an entry will probably stand the best chance with their expertise non DS members are free to give it a shot.

how do you do the "3-d" effect like in thorzilla's sig?

It is way easy
Make a new layer.
Ctrl+M (or N i dont remember) to change the Rectangular marquee for an elipse marquee.
Then "EDIT>FILL". Choose white.
Move the elipse to the top, so it fills only half of the banner.
Then change opacity to whatever you like.

Some of these are good. Vision.Pro, Thorzilla and buckeyefan have done good jobs. Please don't be discouraged if I did not mention your name. Have a look at these entries to see how your entry could be improved! However in order to see how well they look on the site I find it is helpful to add them to a screen capture so that you get the overall effect and to it shows how well they blend into the sites theme.

Yes it shows how it is important to not just make something flashy but also to get the proportions and colors right. The winning event images will obviously have to demonstrate a good blend of the three.

BTW morpheus, if it is not a big bother, could you submit a screen on how my banner would look if it had been the winner?

None have been chosen yet. It's going to go down to a vote by the PS3Portal.com staff If I can arrange it once we feel there have been enough entries.

I got carried away... I might try a calmer, more um square one. Maybe incorporate some of that sweepy orange and blue from the interface.

I think it looks okay on the site.
If it's wanted I would fix it up, match the colours up with the sight, same higlights and shadows etc. and yeh it's a bit off centre the curve, but I'll fix that.

The nintendo didn't really fit anywhere, besides the war is between PS3 and Xbox 360 cause both sides will be getting Revo's aswell haha.

Yeh, as I said I might try a squarer simpler style.

Yea nice graphical techniques used there Skribble, but I think a more rectangular header would fit better with the look of the site.

Heh - I'm quite surprised at the volume of entries that have come in already and pretty snazzy looking ones at that. Hopefully the current submissions will help give the submitters ideas and help them see what colors work best etc. Thanks to everyone for your submissions so far. It's much appreciated!

Yeh the font of Vision's really stands out. But the header as far as I know (Morpheus?) is once your already at the article, it's not to grab your attention about E3, maybe use Visions for that it would be good.

I am quite pleased with the SONy briefing conference 2006 and the E3 one.
If they are not chosen, its OK as it gave me more experience in making banners.

These are simple and I like your use of the Sony images in the Sony conference event header. Thanks for submitting them Thorzilla! I think though that the dark background doesn't really blend that well with the site.

Thanks for your entry Skribble. I like the way these blend with the sites theme and it’s a strong contender so far! However, I think it could be improved slightly if the event header mirrored the banner a little less.

At the moment it’s using the banner images, which works, but clearly the banner images have been manipulated to create it. I think a blank canvas start; working with the colors and lines of the banner rather than using the exact images could really have a dramatic effect if this is the approach you wish to take.

ok i just got finished working on this one which i tried to follow the site's design without mimicing it at all, more like extending the design. anyway the filesizes are pretty large, because i saved at the maximum level, so if you want a more reasonable file size i have no problem with changing it. also i might add a subtle background behind the E3 text

and also when skribbls is displayed on the mockup layout the ps3 in his banner is bigger then the ps3 at the top of the site and vision pro.... simply superb

Good job Vision.Pro - very impressive. I'll wait for skribble’s revision and any others posted until then and then I'll get the site staff to pick a favorite. I might also add a poll so members can pick their favorite as well seeing as so many have been posted.

Yeah I would have to go with either Vison Pro's or Skribbles...very impressive. I can't wait to see the headers on the website live when E3 hits. I myself have started Spring Quarter of Graphic Design and am already using and learning 3d rendering and animation. We are using Adobe Illustrator and then converting over to Strata 3d pro. I probably will get Strata 3d soon and will be able to make #d stuff on my home computer. I cant wait!

Anyway...good job to everyone and keep up the good work. You guys are really helping the Design Squad shine in teh forums and I have been hearing of our anmes outside the forums here. I have a plan to maybe start getting some really big jobs here and actually earning some money.
