Launch in late 2009
Microsoft will start talking about DirectX 11 in less than two weeks. Sources have confirmed that Microsoft game technology conference, previously known as Meltdown and now renamed to Gamefest 2008, will be the place where Microsoft plans to officially announce DirectX 11.
This conference takes place on the 22 and 23 July in Seattle, Washington and it will set you back $550 if you register online. You can find some more details about the conference here (http://www.xnagamefest.com/).
The big feature of DirectX 11 is Tessellation/Displacement while we also heard that Multithreaded Rendering and Compute Shaders are part of it. DirectX 11 also brings Shader model 5.0 but we don’t know many details about it.
It looks like DirectX 11 will stick to rasterization as there is no any mentioning of Ray tracing support.
Nvidia will also talk about DirectX 11 at its Nvision event / conference in late August 2008.

This news should only really be of interest to developers. It will be a long time before any gamers get to play any DirectX11 games.
Anyone know if there are any games out that use DirectX 10's Geometry shaders yet? I havn't heard of any.

The Sith should say, "I got the idea from RenegadevikingPS3 (http://ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=148338&page=3) six days earlier". I deserve some credit (URL linking) here. I know, since I was the 'revolutionary', I get all the collateral damage.

Did they just pretty much completely ignore the use of DirectX 10.1 or something? I have a feeling the first game to even support 11 won't be for at least 2 years . I still think that someone should modify DX9 to look like DX10 . But I don't think that is possible.

Lol, nothing even fully utilizes DX10 yet. Bring on something else!

Good Point my Friend!
I mean I can only think of about 3 games so far that utilize DX10. You would think with all the hype MS has put into making DX10 that they would at least get more Game developers to make games for it. How many of us have bought NVidia or AMD Video Cards to use the technology but have not been able to fully utilize it? SO lame indeed!
I mean even Age of Conan (MMO) primrose DX10 on launch and they are still runing the game on DX9, over 6 weeeks into release and after 3 years of delays? So now MS wantd to announce DX11? What the hell for? Give us more software that uses DX10 first before going weven further into "never never land"? LOL

I bet MS will do the same with Windows. Barely anyone uses Vista and it doesn't look like its catching on too fast so time to release the next one, at least the same suckers that bought Vista will likely buy the new one, easy money

"Because DirectX 10 didn't do so well were going to release DirectX 11." ROFL . The adoption rate will be so low since DirectX 10 had a horrible adoption rate.

There seems to be some misconceptions about what DirectX actually does.
Simply incrementing the version number does not instantly make games look better. It merely gives the graphics programmers different options when designing the engine. The look of a game is mostly down to the artists.

I always thought that the more flexibility the API has the more potential there is for better looking games, so technically new DirectX versions can lead to better looking games.

I'm not disputing that, just implying that the art makes much more of an impact on how a game looks.

I'm buying the "Geforce 12" the Christmas after launch. My bank account hurts now, but mark my words...I keep my promises.
Geforce 11 is going to have DirectX 10.1 says Nvidia. I'm skipping that.
