Leaked pictures: impending Xbox 360 price drop at GameStop *update*

The rumor circulating around the internet these days is that the Xbox 360 will experience a price cut sometime soon. We've just found more evidence to support this rumor, and it comes in the form of a GameStop employee's leaked pictures.

The above are cellphone pictures taken by a GameStop employee and detail the internal announcement and shelf art for the upcoming price drop, which are supposed to happen on July 13, the day before Microsoft's E3 announcement.

While it does seem that this price drop is happening on Sunday, it also means that the price drop probably won't be the big announcement Microsoft has planned for E3. That being said, you'd best keep checking for updates on 360 price drops and Microsoft announcements.

The price change will take effect this Sunday at all GameStop stores, although Microsoft has reportedly sent a directive urging GameStop to start posting the price drop announcement only on the same day.

I am still waiting on news about a price drop for the Elite and Arcade SKUs as right now only the Pro SKU is listed as having a price drop (from US$ 349 to US$ 299). The price of Microsoft-refurbished Xbox 360s will also reportedly be slashed from US$ 299 to US$ 279.

Xbox 360 Console Now Offers Triple the Storage for Same Price

60GB storage now included with Xbox 360; 20GB console will drop to $299.99 in U.S. and Canada.
REDMOND, Wash. — July 13, 2008 — Microsoft Corp. is giving consumers more gigabytes for their buck. The company today announced an Xbox 360 console with triple the storage space of the original console, but for the same price of $349 (U.S.) estimated retail price (ERP).
Available in retail stores in the U.S. and Canada starting in early August, the upgraded Xbox 360 will include a 60GB hard drive for storing the growing wealth of digital entertainment available for the console, including music, movies, television shows and game content. In addition, Microsoft today dropped the price of its 20GB Xbox 360 console in the U.S. and Canada to just $299 (U.S.) (ERP) while supplies last, a savings of $50.
“We know consumers need more and more space to store the amazing digital content Xbox 360 offers, and we’re giving it to them at no extra charge,” said Albert Penello, Xbox director of product management at Microsoft. “No one device offers the depth and breadth of entertainment that Xbox 360 can deliver, and now you’ll have three times the storage to manage all that great content.”
Xbox 360 is just one of three Xbox 360 gaming and entertainment systems Microsoft offers. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Arcade, which comes with a 256MB memory unit and five Xbox LIVE Arcade games, is a value for the whole family for $279 (U.S.) (ERP), and the premium Xbox 360 Elite console is available with a 120GB hard drive for $449 (U.S.) (ERP).

I have many friends who have been waiting for yet another drop. If this does happen I see many people taking advantage of it. I can't help it but does it not seem like an odd time of year for a price drop?

The PS3 had its first drop as an E3 announcement last year, so it shouldnt really come as too much of a surprise to anybody. I bought my 360 about 40 days ago, and I pretty much knew it was coming in July.

Maybe it is just my own personal standpoint but I assumed it would make more sense to do a price drop just before the "huge" holiday season and launch of some great titles. Helps to entice potential buyers. Where as this time of year is notorious to be dry for great game releases.

I honestly think MS is doing this now to gain some momentum back from Sony. With MGS4 doing so well in the press, with the PS3 outselling the 360 this year in their strongest market even before the PS3 started getting good press, MS needs to do something pronto, and not in the fall. A good price cut like this plus a killer announcement from MS could really go a long way to getting their groove back. That is unless Sony drops a pricedrop bomb in the next few months as well I suppose.

Have the UK not had a price drop recently?
NZ/Aus had the price cut a couple of weeks ago and they are majorly pimping the 360's price cut here.
I'm sure the UK will get one sometime soon?

The arcade sku had better get a price drop too. I mean seriously, who is going to pass up the pro model with a hard drive and better cables for only 20 more bucks? Last time the price dropped the arcade dropped as well; so I can only guess that it will this time around too.

This price drop could be to phase out the current 20 gig units to make way for the 60 gig ones for the fall...

With titles guaranteed to be released this year from the X360 side of the fence, there is much momentum for gamers to buy, a price cut only adds icing to the proverbial cake.

In Australia the Arcade, Pro and Elite have dropped in price, the Arcade honestly being the largest in reduced pricing (by $90aud), considering a 20Gb HDD costs $78aud from Big W for example buying an Arcade @ $278aud (originally $388aud which is also the Wii's price) and paying $78aud for the 20Gb HDD basically allows you everything the current Pro model does @ $356aud! Buying an Arcade sku and 20Gb HDD in Australia now is cheaper than buying a Wii! Insane I tells ya...

All very confusing. Are they dropping the price then removing the 20GB and leaving the 60GB model in at the new lower price? Or are they dropping the price until the 20GB SKU runs out and then bringing in the rumoured 60GB model at the existing price point?

Thats the million dollar question right there. Thats what I'm waiting to find out.

The 20gig price cut is to get rid of the stock, then once they are gone the arcade, the elite and the 60giger will all have a price cut, probably in October

They should drop the arcade sku and just have the 20, 60 and the elite.

My solution was to get a cheap 120gb from ebay
Like so:

They sell them instore in Aus for about $230AU, but if you look around online you can get them for half price.

The price is dropping now, and the new SKU Pro will be out for october (right before the holiday season). This way they cover both bases. (the add on harddrive bundle is coming now, but the 20 isnt being phased out till the fall).
