Getting your first trophy is like driving a car for the first time. You want more!
I recently ‘HAD’ to purchase Super Stardust HD on account of the latest update/s (2.40, 2.41). I was one of the many that had the original 2.40 with out it crashing or ‘bricking’ my console but there was lack of games supporting the features. This is when i decided to make the purchase (reading through some forums, you quickly gather a lot of people did this).
So lets start.

Game play
The game deep down is very basic but it doesn’t feel all look like it is. You are playing in the outer layer of various planets. You can fully go round the planet in any direction.
The game basically requires you to break down and destroy everything on the level. This may be rocks/gold/ice/ships/enemies. Through destroying certain objects you gain extra powers and pick ups that will give you more points, so that acts as a motive to destroy as much as possible. Because your overall points are submitted into a world ranking you get a competitive sprite inside you spurring you for that number one place ( I’ve reached just over 32,000! ). The best motivation for the game would have to be the new trophies! It stops being about how good the game is and goes into I just want these trophies to show of to friends.
I’m not sure if this was a marketing strategy from Sony to increase sales on this game by making it the only game on launch with trophies? but my god it has worked and I don’t regret buying it.
As the levels increase the game gets harder. The screen becomes totally full with all this rocks and aliens. It turns into a dodge and shoot game at this point, which does require you full attention.
I give game play a 4.5/5

Graphics
The graphics for this game are beautiful. The explosions really do look nice in HD. It seems a lot of time has been spent making this game just look the piece and it has worked. All the planets look great and when the rocks break a part it looks truly satisfying. So many pieces come apart and you begin to see objects within shining away in their colours.
A great moment to truly show this is when the planet becomes over flown with objects and enemies. There just becomes so much detail all packed onto one screen.
I give graphics a 4/5

Weapons
I am classing the boost as a weapon so in all there are 5 different weapons.
-Rock crusher
-Gold melter
-Ice splitter
-Bomb
-Boost.
The first three are your main weapons. They each have a better effect on certain objects throughout the game. My favourite weapon is the gold melter. There is just something about it that really works well, it may be all the destruction that comes from it.

5 weapons is more than enough for this game, although I wouldn’t complain if more was added. Like I mentioned earlier, you get pickups when you destroy certain objects. These pickups increase the fire power of your weapons. Making them stronger or increasing the speed or even making your gun shoot more than one bullet at a time. This is a great addition, it adds more speed and power to the game but makes it feel more like you’ve achieved something by gaining these powers.
The bomb is very powerful. It near enough destroys all those surrounding you with the tap of a button. You only get two extra per level and these come on a drop ship.
The boost is unlimited, all you have to do is wait for it to recharge then ZAP! your out of there. It will come in handy when situations become to much for you to handle.

Trophies
Lets give you the quick run down of how to achieve them first.
Bronze Trophies

Hero of Lave - Complete planet Lave
Hero of Coventina - Complete planet Coventina
Hero of Nemain - Complete planet Nemain
Hero of Taranis - Complete planet Taranis
Hero of Segomo - Complete planet Segomo
The Tokenizer - Collect 5 tokens with a single boost in Arcade
Scrooge MacBoom - Get 10 bombs in Arcade
Extra Ships Optional - Survive 7 minutes without dying in Endless*
Close Encounters - Survive 45 seconds without shooting or using bombs in Survival*

Silver Trophies

Token Hoarder - Collect 15 tokens with a single boost in Arcade
Well Prepared - Get 20 bombs in Arcade
Shield Blaster - Collect 5 shield tokens while already having a shield
Scenic Route - Complete a planet without using boost
Late Boomer - Get 15 bombs in Bomber*
Shock and Awe - Destroy 10 nukes in Endless*

Gold Trophies

Multiplier Hero - Get 10x multiplier
Split screen Co-op - Get 3 minutes of continuous Co-Op weapon boost on Segomo*

Having these is great. You only want them to make you seem more supreme to those on your friends list. It becomes an addiction just achieving them. Not all trophies are easy to get though. Some require many hours of game play before you finally get it and some are just pure luck.
This was one of the greater moves from Sony.
I give this a 5/5
my overall rating for the game would be a 4.7, the reason for this is because as great as the game is. There are things it just cant do. It has been restricted to a globe type playground where as it could have been good as a screen scroller. All in all though for the £4.99 price tag it is definitely a must have game.
enjoy achieving!

I'm tempted to buy this now, i haven't botherd much with my PS3 lately, mainly because i'm stuck on NAT type 3, and it's just pissing me off.

It is a shame so many never gave this game a chance until now, but still I am glad Sony chose this game as the first to have trophies. Now it will get the recognition it deserves.

Personally I thought the revews of this game were a bit low. Some compared it to Geo Wars stating it isn't as good, and in my opinion SSHD destroys Geo Wars in every way possible. Just the fact that every object (and there are so many) on the screen moves when you move your ship (it only appears your ship is moving) is pretty impressive. No slowdown either. Being able to circle the globe is so much better then being trapped in a box.

I got the game 2 weeks after its release. It is a great game, and it kept my PS3 alive until Warhawk hit the shelfs. SSHD is a great PSN game and it deserves all the recognition. Trophies are an added bonus to a great game, and it brought me back to playing it. Just need the team pack to get the last trophy.
