View Full Version : Trophies - your thoughts on enhancements, features and updates?

Now that the Trophies are finally here and most of you have some experience, what are your suggestions for improvements / enhancements on the Trophy System?
I've got 3 ideas that I'd like to see in some future update on the Trophy System.
The ability to turn off notifications
With some games I'd really like to be able to turn off the notification of achieved trophies. The pop-up message and the beep breaks with the flow of the story or action.
Session progress
Now with the in-game XMB, it would be nice to click on Trophy and get an overview of the achieved Trophies for the current session. This would be very welcome when you have turned off the previously mentioned notification.
Bragging rights / taunt
Trophies can be compared, but I think it would be more fun to be able to message a friend with a quick overview of your most recent update. (Not automated, but by the press of a single button). Start some competition....
I wonder what you guys/girls think of this and hope to read some nice ideas from all of you!

Actually, I'd have to disagree with your suggested "enhancements" to the current Trophy system. Like you almost fittingly conclude, your first two suggestions almost conflict with each other... if your notifications are off, I expect you as the gamer to want to be fully immersed in the gameplay. Then why would you want to check on your "Session progress" out of the blue?
Also, isn't that feature currently available? Just open the in-game XMB menu, head on over to your Trophy Collection... voila. Your up-to-date progress on trophies earned. I think it's getting nitpicky if you want to know specifically what trophies you earned in that one particular gaming session. For one, the trophies are already labeled with the time and date so you can put two and two together... Secondly, I doubt most trophies will be so easily earned to garner multiple earnings in just one gaming session. There's only so many bronze trophies allotted to a game...
And bragging rights... well I suppose that's an idea. But if you wanna hit 'em where it hurts, you may as well just send them a text message "Check out my PSN profile. I have 53 trophies to your 7." Since the "Compare Trophies" feature is already available and so easily from the Friend List... I don't think this Bragging Rights option is all that different...
Sorry to bash, but just my opinion. Cheers.

I have not got any trophies as yet.
So they make a beep when you get one? If so I'd like to be able to set my own sound/music, a little fanfare every time I get one.

I don't think you can change the sound. I have only gotten 5 trophies today and I didn't even hear the sound. I saw the pop up that said I got a trophy but that was it.

i want when i log on the system gives me a break down of whats been going on.
for example if i log on, ill get pop up's on the xmb telling me what my friends(the ones online) have accomplished.
also i want to be alerted when a friend accomplishes something....all this can be turned on/off from the settings/trophy tab

Sorry I have to agree with others. These don't really seem like enhancements so much as you nitpicking.
Especially with the third one, I can see it being a problem eve. I can see people just spamming which would be far more annoying than having the notification.

The one thing I would like is for Sony to make a dedicated, financial effort to have trophies patched into ALL of the existing MAJOR titles. We already know that Ninja Theory won't touch Heavenly Sword with a ten foot pole, and studios like Infinity Ward, Insomniac, and Capcom have already moved on to their next games and are most likely NOT going to bother with adding trophy support to existing games. It's expensive and it takes manpower away from teams that are working on upcoming games.
I think that Sony should hire contractors for these companies to take care of the patches. The contractors' only job would be to edit the existing code to support trophies, custom soundtracks, and rumble. (COD4) They could send teams to each of the major studios, pay them, and provide any resources they may need. That way, the patches get done and the developers don't have to pay for it or take guys off of other projects.
The only downside I see to this would be training. Every game is different and some interaction with the developer would be needed. Also, every design studio out there isn't going to just welcome outside contractors screwing around with their code. Then, of course, there would have to be debugging, testing and quality checks as well which could cost a lot. It would be a very expensive solution, but it may be worth it for both Sony and the game publishers as it could increase attach rates by a great deal.

When finishing a chapter, continue or restart that same chapter?
But without the constant update in the top righthand corner.

As far as I know, Trophies only get updated when you quit the game. So after quiting the game, you click on Trophy and it updates and synchronizes. In game there's no way to tell... as far as I know. But I could be wrong.
And bragging rights... well I suppose that's an idea. But if you wanna hit 'em where it hurts, you may as well just send them a text message "Check out my PSN profile. I have 53 trophies to your 7." No worries. Your comments are very welcome and come with valid arguments. And to be honest, I'm only thinking out loud... it's not MUST HAVE features, so I don't loose any sleep over it when those ideas won't make it in future updates.... ;)

Call it nitpicking, as long as the service is more enjoyed by others (and me), is it wrong?
I see your point in the spamming part, but then again, most persons on your PSN-list would be people you 'know' and could tell them to stop harrassing you. But as said... there might be some issues there.
But thanks for helping out thinking about future updates. :D

To actually put trophies into games would be a great start.......

I agree with what most of you have said and that Sony should make games universally incorporate trophies and custom soundtracks, or as far as possible. With only one game with trophies at the moment, it is rather boring to have to play one game over and over again to get its trophies. It would have been better to have more games so that you could switch one to another in order to stop it feeling repetive.

I want a global trophy leaderboard. THAT would be awesome!

an enhancement would be for a game people actually care about to get trophies. super stardust is not what i'd call a "great" game that is worth spending the time just to earn trophies. sounds more like work than fun.

Well when you actually get a trophy your profile is updated when you pause the game and check the trophy. However others won't know until you synchronize it (like you mentioned).
The only thing I would like to see is the trophy pop up to change. Its too big. Would like to see a smaller version, so I don't get distracted.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I would like them to fix the Trophy Icon. When looking at my Trophies the "Trophy Collection" icon is a question mark. Shouldn't it be a Trophy Icon? Anyway, I would like that fixed and for things to move more fluidly when looking at other players collection.

Ahhh....I didn't even think of that. Makes sense though, how could they have made icons for it when the themes were out before the update....

How about little icons beside your level?

What do you mean exactly?
Like a special icon for every level?

I'd really like to see a hour count of every game you've played in your profile. The profiles are way too small, a personal picture would be nice.

Yes, it just looks lacking with only numbers. An Icon should be beside every level.
Maybe if Level 1-3 had a bronze Icon
Then Level 4-6 had the same icon but in silver
Similarly level 7-9 had the same but in gold.
Then level 10 had the same but in platinum.
Then the cycle repeats with new icons.

Here are my suggestions:
1. MAKE THEM MANDATORY!!!! - Sony must insist that ALL games have trophies
2. Trophies from downloadable content should NOT be required for 100%. When new DLC is released you should not lose your 100% completion that you worked for. It is stupid that you must by two packs of DLC for 100% on SSHD. After completing the first 12 trophies you should have 100% completion for the game but 0% for the additional DLC. This only makes sense.

does anybody else think that on the PSN store there should be maybe an icon on what PSN games actually feature trophies, or atleast something in the game description telling you that there are trophies to be won in the game.
i know at the moment sshd is the only game but when more come out it would be nice to distinguish what games have trophies and what games dont

I agree with number 2 but number 1.. Just wait =) All games up until december have freedom to finish their devlopement. But anygame launching from January 1st 2009 will have to have trophy support.

I would also like to see a pop up when you reach the next level.
Example:
"You have earned a trophy" .....then "You have reached level 2!" With an Icon.

I like the idea of special icons for the different levels.
Also a message that you reached a new level would be nice. I became Level2 without even knowing.
Thanks for the input guys! Let's keep the good ideas coming.
