I wonder if future movies will use this as well

The Dark Knight Blu-ray to Feature IMAX Shifted Aspect Ratio

Posted July 7, 2008 06:34 PM by Josh

http://images.blu-ray.com/news/icons/wb.jpg While speaking with iF Magazine, 'The Dark Knight' director Christopher Nolan mentioned that the inevitable of Blu-ray will feature the IMAX shifted aspect ratio. He commented, "The Blu-ray, in particular, will be able to actually use the shifted aspect ratios as it appears on the IMAX screen because the 16:9 aspect ratio is sufficiently different from the 2:4 that you'll actually see a shift on the Blu-ray."

He continued, "The resolution on the Blu-ray is clear enough that you can actually see difference in grain structure and sharpness. So I think it will be quite spectacular."

The film has still not hit theaters, so the Blu-ray is far off, but its interesting to learn that the high definition format is exciting directors.

Why not? You might as well use the PS3, it is the best BD player on the market afterall..lol

Why not? You might as well use the PS3, it is the best BD player on the market afterall..lolA standalone dedicated player is always better than a console. Right now though they're very expensive. It's already a very good possibility that they will come down significantly come this Holiday. Aside from all that, using the PS3 as a dedicated player will most likely cut its lifespan down a couple years.

Anyway, back on topic... what is this "shifted" aspect ratio?

IMAX is "wider" than the majority of theatrical releases...so im assuming that it means the sequences that were shot with the IMAX cameras will be a wider aspect ratio and they will not crop the image to fit with the rest of the movie..

Hmm, but I don't have a curved screen, haha.
This probably just means a little thicker black bars along the top...

Death Knight?

yes, i have. saw it at the I am Legend IMAX showing, and now on blu-ray. the 6 minute prologue took up the entire 16:9 screen, no borders, and (only got to see it at 720p) it looked better than any blu-ray i have in my collection. the picture quality was definitely outstanding. even better considering at 720p it looked better than all my 1080p movies.

I didn't know IMAX was wider... interesting. But it's still going to fill the screen... as in no bars on top or bottom (speaking with HDTV's in mind)?

No - if it is in the full IMAX aspect ratio there will be black bars.

Please don't tell me that you have an issue with O.A.R.

here is the difference between the two. i was confused when i didn't see the black bars when watching the prologue also, then as i'm watching, realizing.. there's nothing missing. this filled in the blanks for me.. so to speak.

A standalone dedicated player is always better than a console.

I don't know about that. We've been able to receive easy firmware updates, and have avoided many of the compatibility issues that stand alone players have had. We don't get audio bitstream, but we get the exact same sound, sans the light on the receiver.

It will. They're not going to miss out on cashing in some big bucks for the summer's biggest blockbuster by waiting until after Christmas to release this title. My money's on a December 3rd-10th release for this title on DVD and Blu-Ray.

IMAX is a wider 2:4, as opposed to 16:9 (so for every 16 inches wide the screen is, it will be 1 inch shorter proportionally speaking). That means that the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen will be slightly larger. Also the picture quality will be alot more impressive, which I think makes more of a difference than an extra quarter inch of black at the edges of the screen.

Please don't tell me that you have an issue with O.A.R.Nope. It was just nice to watch some Blu-ray movies where the picture filled up the entire screen. It just seemed a little more immersive I guess.

We don't get audio bitstream, but we get the exact same sound, sans the light on the receiver.I was speaking more in long-time sense. Right now I use my console. But when a finalized version (and cheaper) come out by this Holiday I'll get and use that. In the long-term sense, its more wear on the PS3 which could potentially shorten its lifespan.
