View Full Version : Burnout Paradise is a huge disappointment.

I used to have Burnout Revenge back when I had a Xbox 360 and had weeks worth of fun with that playing with my bros.
But to us Burnout Paradise is a huge step backward for the following reasons.
No splistcreen. What the hell? How could they take out splitscreen.
No crash mode. Once again, what the hell?
Too clunky to do what you want. It was awesome in previous burnouts when me and my bro wanted to play Traffic Attack or some other mode, we could just pick it and play. Now you have to manuever to a specific intersection assuming you have any clue how to get there to play the mode that you feel like playing.
I really hope Burnout 6 goes back to the series roots and includes splitscreen multiplayer.

Yep I would have to agree with all of you on this. I remember in burnout 2 & 3 the crash parties were great on the ps2, my mates would come over and bring their memory cards with them and it would combine all of our best crash scores. We used to play it for hours on end, it was great but this has all gone and it's to be honest it **** now.
I got Burnout Paradise and sold it about a week later. Unless they bring back the crash modes like it used to have then I am not interested.

Showtime = crash mode
Hit R1 and L1 at the same time to activate this mode at ANY TIME.

I think Criterion took a gusty new direction which was fruitful, sure there are numbers of those who will dislike it but I think the old style BO's were becoming stale and more of the same. I think BOP is a great game and the only thing I'd have liked (but probably change the rating) would be crash test like dummies as drivers and passengers.

Are you seriously serious?!
Showtime is utter bullsh*t compared to the Timeless Epicness called Crash Mode. Also, I agree. And, IMO, the worst thing was to make the city open. I don't want that "GO ANY WAY YOU WANT" crap, the old RESTRICTED tracks were perfect 'cause there was always and all the time action, fellow drivers crashing, trucks blocking your way etcetera. Now, with the open-ended roads, there just simply is not that much action. Most of the time in races you drive somewhere, alone, nobody to wreck your car against, and trying to figure which way to go from the crappy GPS system.
I'm most certainly NOT buying the next Burnout if they keep it open-ended and don't bring the Crash Mode back. I'm very dissappointed with this game.

Gotta say i disagree whith ya's. I do admit that its really could use 2-player spilt screen, and the old crash mode but paradise is still an awsome game. The freeburn online is great, the single player is great and with free content coming all the time i would not by any means say it was a 'huge disappointment'.

ok so i have to agree with no split screen i used to play my friend all the time cuz that was the only game he could play. but i wouldnt say it is a complete disappointment. no more crash mode does suck but isnt a deal breaker because stunt run is supposed to replace that although i think stunt run is harder. i never really like traffic attack and i could do without traffic checking i think it takes away from a race if you hit a car you should be penalized for it. and as far as knowing where the races are and having to drive around they did that so you can find the billboards, jumps, and gates. there is a gps thing like in gta 4 so you can mark where you want to go and it will give you directions towards it. sorry to hear you dont like it but i personally think it is great yes it is different and is missing somethings from old versions but non of them are a dealbreaker. hopefully you will come to love it like so many of us burnout fans have

This game didn't grip me as much as i thought it would. Very tediuos, very annoying when you get lost in mid race and that you can't restart a race. I prefer need for speed although the first need for speed for the ps3 was a pile of cr** also.

Making Burnout open-ended is to me the worst thing they could have done to the series. Burnout had always been about quickly being able to enter a race that would be so action packed and fast paced that it was in a league of it's own.
But now that they've completely destroyed that and got rid of one of the best game modes in the series, I have lost my faith in the series. Hopefully they'll throw Paradise in the garbage bin and make a game that's worthy of the Burnout title.

It took me a little time to get used to the new concepts, and I'm also not totally happy with the fact that I can't just simply restart a failed race. But apart from that, Paradise got me hooked completely after a while. The survival and takedown races are still pure Burnout carnage, and racing through traffic at lightning speeds still gets my adrenaline pumping.
Yeah, it's different, and I'd also like to have the old straight-forward cash-for-crash mode back, but to call Burnout Paradise crap certainly doesn't do it justice.

I loved the old Burnouts as well but I don't think the new one is trash. I did prefer it before it was open ended because it was much easier to jump in and do whatever it was that you wanted to do. I get lost in the city to tell you the truth and have lost many races because I didn't know or couldn't tell where the hell I was going. The biggest complaint I have is no splitscreen multiplayer. All that aside I still like Burnout Paradise and think it's a great game but still miss the older versions as well.

I couldn't agree more.
When i first heard Burnout Paradise would be "Open world", I was VERY disappointed.
I knew it wouldn't work, And i was right.
Bring the REAL Burnout back! Not this Open World tech demo, This is by FAR the slowest Burnout game yet.
And the least amount of fun i've had playing these games.

No one plays splitscreen anymore, people play online. The crashes are still a lot of fun, even if they're random. The more you play, the more familiar you will get with the locations. I applaud Criterion for trying something different, instead of the same old hash. And online multiplayer is wicked fun.

you don't have any real friends, don't you? (not talking about online friends)
When my friends come over we always play split screen, its usually Guitar Hero 3, Pro Evolution Soccer, Warhawk, Calling all cars and Resistance, the problem with resistance is that the smaller maps are designed for 8 people and just 4 people can play offline multiplayer, but its still enjoyable.
Anyway, one of the main reasons why i didnt buy Burnout was the lack of split screen. I didnt like the fact that they made it like free-roam, i just wanna pick up and play, but i would still have bought the game if it was just that.

Yeah I completely agree when I heard it was going free-roam and no split-screen I didn't hold high hopes for it. I actually rented it to see it first hand and it was a pile of sh*t IMO, I used to enjoy the previous Burnout's but Paradise tried to copy NFS and failed.

Well i just hope the next burnout game can make us crash onto the other traffic cars from behind without killing yourself. That's what i liked about burnout revenge.
That was the one thing I hated () about Revenge. Racing in and out of traffic was what made Burnout Burnout. Traffic made the racing risky and dangerous. With traffic-checking, they effectively removed one of Burnouts key components. And in doing so, they dumbed down the action to ******ed levels and made the racing simplistic and easy.
Burnout used to be awesome.. now it is just a pile of trash.
You speak craziness...
Paradise is the best in the series. There's so much to do and the online mode is fantastic.
Agreed. They retained everything that made the previous games great (except for crash mode), took out everything that made the previous games suck (like aftertouch and crashbreakers and :gta: traffic-checking), and created a giant playground to do your thing in.

The game is just fine it's just different. Do you really want just another burnout? I mean seriously just keep playing the old ones if that's the case. Yes I miss the preset crash mode but show time can be just as fun and if I miss it enough I still have the old games so Ill just play that. I have to applaud Criterion for trying to do something different rather than just milking us for cash by selling the same damn game over and over again but with a couple of new tracks. I've said it before and I'll say it again it's managed very well to avoid being called "Madden Racing '08" with the changes they've made. And the races? No more waiting 2minutes between races watching a loading screen. Just pull up to a light... you know the ones on the MAP that tells you exactly how to get where you want.

i agree with OP here, BP was a huge let down, the openness of the whole game made it just average, it should have been like Burnout 2 and 3 (takedown) was.
fast and easy to pick up races, in BP i have to look for the races i havent completed and sometimes waste alot of time to find and then when i do find it i mess it up and i have to drive ALL THE WAY BACK again to retry... jezus its like going back in time this.
What i did enjoy about BP was the online stuff, thats great and still is although i do miss Crash Attack and the other crazy modes.
I know Criterion will never go back to how Burnout 3 was (btw Revenge was really a big letdown if u ask me) and thats a real shame as burnout 2 and 3 is by far the best racers out there and 1 ,revenge and dominator is way better than most other racers out there and now it just dissapears in the crowd of an free roam racer which ends up beeing a mess unless u dedicate yourself to it for over 50+ hours (or even more).

I'm not that sure, first thing I did was collect all the smash's , jump and billboards, which is as fun as hell in the free roaming mode. But you get 3 awesome cars for doing this, and racing becomes, dare I say it boairng as hell.
I'm working my way thorugh the license's, primairly doing takedown's in a big heavy truck.
But honeslty the racing kind of suck's it too easy to get lost in a race and end up miles away. And if you you dont you can cruise through the races.
The only time I farily is if I get lost.
Figure out how to get most of the billboards was the most fun I have had with this game.

Saying Burnout Paradise sucks is wrong, just plain wrong. Yeah it's different and Showtime may not be the old Crash mode, but the changes they made to the game are awesome. I hope they add some of the elements from the old Crash mode into Burnout Next, but it's more than likely going to retain Showtime. And for the record if your comparing old Burnout games to one another, Revenge was garbage compared to 2 and 3. I can't wait to, not only get the new updates for Paradise, but to crash and race in whatever city they come up with in Burnout Next

I didn't think Criterion could ever recapture the unadultured win that was Burnout Takedown, but I think they succeeded with Paradise. IMO, they sit side by side for the best in the series; Takedown for it's focus, Paradise for it's bold innovation.

I'm not sure if these two posts are related?
In regards to your first post though, I didn't mention anything about the licenses. That said, if you're asking how I thought they went, there were some that were a bit challenging, particularly some of the Burning Routes required in the later stages, but I didn't find it too difficult to get all the licences.
The Criterion Elite final license too a bit of time due to the fact you had to do every race on the grid, but by that stage, you pretty much know the city so it becomes quicker and easier to navigate it.
The structure was brilliant though, really gets you exploring and finding the fastest routes around the map 8)

or buy a backwards compatible ps3?
anyway i have my own oppinion, having now spent over 280 hours in paradise city i still cant put this game down, i admit when i first got it i was disappointed about the lack of split screen but it is not an unusual thing in gamed these days, as for crash mode it was good fun but not a huge deal they left it out. the open city is a bit like NFS but if you hadnt noticed NFS have moved onto closed environment controlled racing, which is a bit sucky. where Paradise excels is online, it has endless opportunities for racing takedowns and general larking about. also with the constant stream of updates that criterion bring to us it never gets repetitive. how many games can you say are still getting updates so long after the release date, maybe COD4 or warhawk thats about it.

I agree that it needs splitscreen and open world is kinda two way deal. Its great for just having freeburn fun but for races its awfull. They should have made closed tracks when you race or something like that. And graphics could have been better if it wasnt open world game. I believe they will come back to the roots but then I expect a lot better graphics.

Two steps forward, one step back. They have really shaken up the formula and they did get so much right admittedly. The free roaming is brilliant, the events are frantic and the sheer variety is fantastic that it leads to a very varied and near complete package as a whole.
On the down side, the free roaming does hurt the racing dramatically, if it was set courses through the city then it would work fine, that plus the lack of race restart does really hurt the title but at the moment this is probably more a technology issue rather than anything else.
Paradise is very nice with it's issues but I am more looking forward to Paradise 2 since that should be where they can take the faults of the current one and iron them out. They are onto something big with it as a whole but it will be a while yet before it's all working perfectly.
Admittedly I did buy Revenge for my 360 the other day because it does have better races though. :/

I'm 50/50 on this one I got the game 2 weeks ago and I enjoy it I think taken out crash mode was a massive mistake thats where the fun was especially for me I'd created a game called "Drink With Paradise Crash" eveytime you successfully win a round you get a shot it was great for a gamers night in if your trying to beat scores.
Trying to get a score half smashed is mad end up crashing at the start lol
I'll admit I dont like the open area thing it just looks like EA said to Criterion take the open area thing out of Need For Speed Underground 2 add more traffic and a better looking city along with crashes.
I've not played online yet I wanna finish single player currently got 35/60 rewards not far from 36 and onwards.
But I give the game 7/10

Totally agree they have well and truely arsed this game up
NO SPLITSCREEN! ..........Its a crime to leave it out.
Having to go to poxy intersections to start misions..........utter pain
And even worse is the fact that if you loose a race you cant just re start and have another go.........they really balsed up the logistics of this game.
It seems to me that so many developers these days want to rush games out to bring in the cash.
And it really pee's me off that every bloomin developer seems to think that everyone in the world has no mates and all they want to do is play strangers on the net. Hey guess what! we DONT! So by all means give us online but stop forgetting about Local play and splitscreen ALLRIGHT!!!:gta:

Wow there is some extreme ignorance in this thread. Most of the people in here bashing the game, it seems like they have only played the demo.
If you get lost, YOU CAN STILL WIN THE RACE. How freaking hard is it to look at your map and find another road to take.
The restarting of races is stupid. There are like 25 spots on the map where you can start a race, you didn't beat one, then try another one at another nearby intersection. The only ones that are annoying are like 2 burning routes which are very tough and one mistake and you'll lose.
The graphics suck? Um... yeah 720p 60fps doesn't suck, the cars look incredible and the sense of speed in the later cars is just insane.
No crash mode? So what! Theres 7 different modes of play + online and showtime = crash mode.
Its a Criterion game published by EA. Criterion is the only company doing direct work with this game, EA just provided the funding for them to make it. It is a great game 9/10 if you actually play the full version and anyone that thinks its awful hasn't played it or doesn't care for intense arcade racers.

Truth.
I also think a lot of people get hung up on the jump to an open world and the relatively steep learning/re-learning curve. The game is daunting early on, but once you "get it", it's one of the greatest racers ever.

Tell me; why don't I like Paradise, even though I have the full version and I love Burnout Takedown, which might actually be the BEST PS2 racer. And I believe Takedown is an "intensive arvade racer".

Heh, Showtime is simply nothing compared to Crash Mode. Period.

Might be? Burnout Takedown was the greatest arcade racer released last-gen (IMHO).
With Paradise, Criterion took everything that worked in Takedown (the sense of speed, the spectacular crashes and the sense of barely controlled chaos) and dropped in into a boundless, purpose-built, wide-open world...

I thought like this at the start but I got used to it and I quite enjoy it now actually. Still a pain when you fail a mission you have to go looking for it again :( That gets annoying.

Whether you like Paradise or not, I don't see how anyone could be disappointed in what Criterion have accomplished. Wide-open sandbox city, breakneck speeds, silky-smooth framerate, plenty of DLC.. the list goes on..
If all games were as thought-out, supported and as polished as Paradise, we'd be lucky gamers 8)
