Hello everyone, I recently purchased a Sony Bravia 58" LCD and I was debating on whether or not to hook up my PS3 to it because I've heard stories that gaming on a HDTV can cause burn-in issues. Could anyone confirm if this is still an issue? Thanks in advance and I really appreciate it. :)

Burn in or image retention is not something that happens very often.
Even with the newer Plasma tv's it's not a real issue.

LCD tv's are less (or even no longer) likely to burn in. Even when gaming for a prolonged period of time. Though some caution is necessary. But I don't assume you will be playing like 24hrs a day and play only 1 game. The burn-in is caused by displaying the same picture (like a HUD or radar) for hours after hours after hours without giving the screen a rest.

Basically, if a display device is susceptible, any static image will cause burn if displayed for too long. TV company logosin the corner of the screen can offer a problem unless they are somewhat transparent.

I've run my PS3 with my 46" LCD for over 1 year. No problems.
I think "burn in" was a problem in early HDTVs

Even if you were to leave the system paused at a certain spot in the game, TVs themselves nowadays are programmed with their own screen-cut off where the screen will just go blank until you move something again.

PS3 itself has its own screen saver too. Nothing to worry about as others have already stated.

I thought screen burn in was something that you only had to worry about with plasmas. I've had my LCD TV since September and have yet to have a problem with any burn in.

True burn in does not effect LCD..... Plasma and CRT are the ones you need to worry about. LCD's can be effected by Image Retention, which is not Burn In. Its not the same thing, and is harder to do.... much harder, and basically never happens to normal people who have normal usage. It will just go away, like some have said here. So don't worry one bit.

So..... the answer is basically NO.

burn in cannot happen on an lcd because the lcd is not generating the light, but rather it has a white light and "shutters" that open and close to allow certain portions of the white light through to the viewer in order to form colors. there's nothing to get "burned in" on the lcd.
this is one of the major advantages of the technology, but also one of the reasons that deep blacks are harder to obtain.

burn in is permanent, image retention is temporary.

As someone who works in IT, I can say without a doubt that a LCD can get image retention. It may not be caused by the same mechanism that causes the problem on CRTs and plasmas, but I have seen enough lcd monitors with taskbars "burned" into them to know that it is definately possible.

On the flip side, each of the times I have seen it have been extreme cases of the same screen being up for VERY long periods of time. I would highly doubt that any PS3 user would subject any TV to that kind of stress. I don't think you need to worry at all about using your PS3 on an LCD. I game on a plasma for long periods of time, and have never once had one instance of image retention. The LCD is even safer. Relax and enjoy.

What's the point in getting a 56" tv if your not going to hook up your ps3 to it?

Sorry I haven't had a chance to report back and thank you guys sooner. I just wanted to thank everyone for the advice they gave me and I took your advice and went out and bought a HDMI cable yesterday and hooked it up, and I have to say it looks much much better than being on my 26" SDTV. :P

hey everyone I have a 40" samsung lcd its only 1080i and thats what my ps3 is hooked up to. I don't have permanent screen burn but it seems that some images in games or in blue ray seem to stay shadowed in the screen until something bright or major go overtop. Seems like it happens when brights are on and then all of a sudden it goes to a darker screen then i can see the shadows. I don't think i can change refresh rate or anything on my tv. I'm kind of lost, any advice?

Well I just got the ps3 and the tv doesn't seem to do it with anything else. Although now that i think about it, it did seem to get worse as I watched The Dark Knight on blue ray with the ps3, more shadows towards the end. I did have an HD DVD player when they came out and had no problems watching those movies. I wonder if its the ps3

Image retention only happens when you have a static image displayed for a long period of time, when you play a game the screen for the most part is moving, your much more likely to have image retention by using 4:3 mode which is the most common reason people get image retention and not games.

as long as you're not some loser kid who plays ALL DAY LONG, then you should have no problems, even with PLasma
