I upgraded my 60gb to a 160. I used a 4gb usb flashdrive to save my game saves and some videos I had. If you have an external hard drive you can you use to back up everything. Just make sure the hard drive is formatted to FAT32.

But how much of the data is actually needed by the saves games?
The additional data like games caches and downloaded PSN games don't need to be backed up. You can re-download all the PSN-games like endless times (or a maximum of 5 times on different machines) without having to buy the games again.
As for the cached game data, it's just installing the game again.
When I backed up my data, I could store my files easily on a 4 GB SD card.

why don't you transfer your music or whatever media you have first then keep doing that till you finished transferring all you have then back up your ps3.

Couldn't you just put your 60GB HDD into a hard drive enclosure? Then put the new HDD in, connect the 60GB via USB then transfer the files you want over to the 250GB?

there is a backup option in the xmb somewhere if i remember right. you may just want to invest in an external drive and just back up to that. can always reformat it and use it on your pc. can never have enough hard drives floating around your house!

I wanna know that, too. That will make it so much easier for me when I go to get one.

Doesn work that way exactly, he might be able to get his videos and music back on the new HD by putting the old one in an enclosure but I've never heard anyone trying. and it certainly wouldnt help get his game data back.
Best suggestion is to start moving your music and videos to your computer with the flash drive first. Then see about your game saves, these would be the more important thing, game data is usually just system setting type stuff like screen positioning, what volume the music in each game is set at etc. You might even be able to store some of your game saves on computer actually if you can put them on the flash drive.
But what it comes down to is that it's shocking that you have all that data but no external drives you could use, it makes things so much easier not only for video gaming but computing as well because you never know when these puppies are gonna blow on ya.

That hard drives RPM is only 5400. You are better in the 7 is will help it read faster.

i've only got roughly 6gig left on my 60gig ps3, so i was thinking about the same thing.... putting a massive hdd in.
like sprintnasty said, there is a back up option somewhere (i think i have seen it before).
otherwise, has anyone had success in copying ps3 hdd games to an external drive then putting them back on the ps3???
my other question is about the choice of hdd. the ps3 is soo very quiet. if i change hdd i'm gonna need an ultra quiet hdd otherwise i'll be annoyed with the noise... my maxtar 500gig hdd on my pc is louder than a jet engine! (gonna get rid of that shortly too)....what is a good, quiet laptop hdd that will work with the ps3... anyone?

I tried to find a cheap one at tiger direct but I dont think the one I looked at for $59.99 (On tigerdirect.ca) is 2.5 and it was 7200 RPM >_<

7200 RPM only offers about a 2 second improvment as far as PS3 is concerned, there's been several tests done already.

I have a Western Digital Scorpio 320gb drive in my PS3 now, I hardly even know it's there, the fan makes more noise than it does.
as a matter of fact... HOLY SHEBOYGAN! LOOK!

I'd still go for the higher RPM.

I would do what Alpha said, copy your music, videos, gamesaves and whatever else you can to your computer. Since you only have a 4GB card it sounds like you'll have to transfer it in stages.
I just recently upgraded my 20GB to a 250GB (exact same model you've chosen), luckily I have an external so I just backed up my entire hard drive with the Back-up Utility. If you can borrow an external for a day I highly suggest this since it was very simple to use. It even backed up my PSN games and demos so I didn't need to download those either (although I've heard some people say this isn't the case for them).
About the drive speeds, I'm relatively sure they have little influence. Nice pick on the drive as well, my Scorpio has been fabulous so far.

Well the RPM speed is the same as the 60gb, so technically the PS3 is designed to run at those speeds/conditions, thats why I went for a 5400, I could go for a 320gb as it's only 62 quid, but I'm sure 250 will do me.
anyways, it looks like I'm gonna be transferring my media to a PC & backup just my game data :|
Thanks you all for ya help, +rep
lol, I've given out too much rep in the last 24h's

Purchasing an external caddy to suit a 2.5" SATA drive is a good idea anyway as it will allow you to use your 60GB from your PS3 as extra external storage after you have upgraded, and for the price of external caddy's there's really no reason not to.
If you go down this road - here is what I would suggest doing. The reason I suggest the following steps is that I'm not 100% sure what "file format" the PS3 uses for it's hard drive - but I've got a feeling it isn't compatible with Windows PC's (ie: FAT32)
Insert your new 250Gb hdd into your caddy - connect it to your PC and partition it as Fat32 (you will need a 3rd party application like swiss knife to format a partition larger than 32Gb as Fat32). Once you have done that - you can connect this drive to your PS3 via USB.
On the PS3 system menu - use the backup option to create a backup of your entire HDD, and select your external HDD as the location to save this backup. Once this process is complete - you can connect your external to your PC and transfer this backup to the PC for temporary storeage.
Do the HDD swap as normal - the PS3 will probably prompt you to format the new drive when it is installed.
Install your old HDD into the caddy - then connect it to your PC. Repeat the process involved in formating your external drive as FAT32, then copy your PS3 backup to the HDD. Then connect the HDD back up to the PS3, in the PS3 menu - navigate to the "restore backup" option and follow the prompts.
It sounds like a lot of stuffing around - I know, but it should allow for a 100% seemless swap, all your data, and system settings will be restored in this way.

I recently upgraded my 40gig to a 250gig.
I bought an 8gig flash drive from ebuyer for about £18, there are cheaper ones on there as well.

I have a Mybook, it dosent come formated for FAT32 and thus the PS3 has trouble reading it. if you did get it you'd have to reformat it immediatly.

Hi, I need some help too.
I backed up all my info in a HDD that I have on an enclosure. However, when I go to the Backup Utility and try to restore the info my PS3 system freezes. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

you can put tha old HDD in a 2.5" enclosure i did it, but if you need to reformat it (which you most likely will have to) it will erase all data on it so a good idea to hav tha data backed up on a flash drive or external
