I'll get it for the DS, but they better make the next true gen game on the PS3 or I'm blowing something up.

Why?
It's not as though it matters. Sony's not paying us enough to be "loyal".
Play games on whatever they come out on, and let the developer decide what makes best use of the system, or what system best realizes their game.

That's kind of disappointing actually, a straight up port. SE has been moving the old FF games to 3D graphics on the DS, adding new content, new movies, but Chrono Trigger clearly isn't feeling the same love. The game deserves more. I'm not even sure this edition will surpass the PS1 conversion I already have.

I hope they release Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger on the PSN.
Alot of people didn't get to play these games.

You know, having played a fair hunk of FF3 on the DS, and having played some of the old games on other systems... I'm just not sure I really want that update. I mostly want to play the games as they were, not necessarily much changed.
And yes, I dislike colorized versions of classic films.

We can only hope to get them on PSN. You can just add those two games to the long list of games that I would love to see on PSN.

In a perfect world I'd push for high res sprite based graphics, bringing the game up to the capabilities of the platform (whichever platform it came to) without radically altering the game, but that clearly won't happen. I've already got the game at that level so there's nothing in a pure retro port to motivate me to buy it again, especially for the DS, a platform I regret buying. Ideally there'd be a way to put my existing PS1 version on my PSP to get the exact same experience that was portable, till then if I want retro I can play it on my PS3.
I'm not big on nostalgia, far to often going back shows you how your perceptions have changed and made something you once thought was great a lot less impressive. I'm far more interested in the new Bionic Commando Re-armed remake than going back to play a perfect port of the SNES original, for example. Bionic Commando was an awesome game in 1992 when I played it, but it looks like crap now. I like the newer 3D DS FF Games, because they are different, they have additional content, and that's a reason to buy them and play them again. Otherwise playing a pure port would risk making me realize the game I liked originally wasn't really that good anymore.

I like the old school games as they were released. I actually like the old Final Fantasy and Zelda games, and I would rather play through the original Chrono Trigger than a new school remake.
I'd love to see Sony release some old school jRPG action through PSN, or find a few studios to give us something new in that aesthetic. That's a genre that could really have an impact on the PSP. I'm very willing to play it on my DS tho!

Their both PS1 titles with Chrono Trigger PS1 being the ultimate version so far.

it would be super to see some RPGs either remakes, sequals or spin offs on the PSN as it is certainly a brilliant platform for it. On the other hand I'm not too concerned about them being released on the DS either since I have a DS and will probably get Chrono Trigger.
About not updating graphics, perhaps Square are leaving them close to how they were as a homage, they may feel the game is better left sprite based. Really I think the best thing would be a touch up to smooth the graphics, a wholly 3D redesign could break the game

I really wouldn't mind having Chrono Trigger on the DS. It might mean that Chrono Cross will come out for it also.

Doubt the DS could run Cross, the PSP would have no real trouble, but the DS hasn't the power or the screen resolution to do it justice.

They could easily just change the textures though like they did with Super Mario 64 DS. And last time I checked the N64 was more powerfull compared to the PS1.

Wether Cross Is on the DS or the PSP I'll buy it. It would probably be more fun on the DS depending on what you can do with the touchscreen.

if it's a straight port, I won't be getting it. Trigger is in my Top 5 of all time, but I already have the PS1 version, and I like it better on a console and a big TV. that's just me though, I know CTDS's sales will be something great.

I thought Crono Trigger was the best RPG for the longest time. I tried Crono Cross later and thought it sucked. To me, CC was nowhere near what I was expecting after CT. It's based on an online text based game for god's sake. I didn't even bother finishing it.

Er, uhm.
The DS is more powerful than a PS1, and has more screen real estate in practice.

wouldnt they pay the developers to make the game on their system?

I can't wait for it for DS. It would not bother me if there was a sequel for Wii as I have the system.

They wouldn't.
So why would we be "loyal" to them? I don't care what platform games come out on. If the game is fun, I'll probably play it.
wouldnt they pay the developers to make the game on their system?
If they had to, I'd guess they would.

Something you might know the answer to.
i've noticed how the GBA seemed to resemble a handheld SNES, and the DS resembles a handheld N64.
But the GBA lacked the extra two buttons that the SNES controller had.
Does this mean that the DS might be seeing more SNES ports because of the DS' button layout?

Interesting question. Wouldn't surprise me at all if the DS's extra buttons help a lot with SNES ports.

Chrono Cross was such an amazing sequel I really wish they'd work on another installment. This is easy money though porting an already legendary game on a system with an insane user base. Watching the trailer was enough to get the nostalgia going so I'll probably buy it when it comes out.

Seriously?
Then why do DS games all look like crap? I've got like 8 of em, and I've yet to be blown away by any. So far looks like the DS can top NES and SNES games, but I've seen nothing that matches or beats anything PS1 or newer.

I wish they were doing chrono trigger.. since that was the snes game.. plus i didnt get to play it and the emulators i've found suck..
Oddly enough they choose the psx game to remake on the ds rather than the original snes - trigger which was proclaimed to be the better of the 2 anyway..
The better question is why the heck hasn't sony asked for some psp support of remakes.. I guess FF1 & 2 didnt sell so hot..

Er, uhm. Super Mario 64 DS?
That's N64-grade 3D hardware, or very very close to it, and the N64 runs rings around the PS1.
The DS doesn't have the storage capacity of the PS1, but it has much more powerful rendering hardware.
Mostly, though, your problem is that you've gotten used to much more powerful hardware, so now your idea of what graphics ought to look like has changed. It's the same thing that makes a refrigerated can of pop feel warm to the touch if you've just come in from 40 below; you've acclimated. If you look at 3D engines (say, in the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates for DS), it's pretty clear that they have much higher polygon counts than, oh, say, FF7. MUCH higher.
But you're not comparing them to FF7, or Chrono Trigger; you're comparing them to the PS2 or PS3. The DS is not as powerful as a PS2. So when you think of how impressive PS1 games were, you're mostly remembering how they looked to you YEARS ago (assuming you played them on the PS1 back in the day), and they looked much more impressive then. I can still remember what it was like to be amazed by the gorgeous graphics of FF7, even though I know it looks like crap to most people today.

No, actually I was comparing FFIII to PS1 FF games. The DS game looks like crap by comparison. Can't say I've seen Super Mario 64 for the DS (I never really liked Mario 64 on the N64), I have seen Super Mario World and while it looks nice for the DS it doesn't look to impressive compared to much else after the SNES.
Chrono Trigger has 14 endings btw.

The backdrops do, of course. However, the actual character models are substantially better than the FF games on the PS1.
I wasn't saying you were intentionally getting the comparison wrong. I'm pointing out that, since you are (we assume!) human, you are inevitably going to compare things to your current experience. Graphics which awed us in 1997 look pretty pathetic today.
Can't say I've seen Super Mario 64 for the DS (I never really liked Mario 64 on the N64), I have seen Super Mario World and while it looks nice for the DS it doesn't look to impressive compared to much else after the SNES.
Well, duh. It's intentionally sticking to the style of the 2D game.
The basic point is that, between Metroid and SM64, we know that the DS can do about what the N64 could -- and the N64's hardware absolutely stomps the PS1's hardware.
FF3's backdrops and scenery are quite simple, and are probably not as good as the pixel-perfect CGI rendered backdrops used in FF7. On the other hand, the character models are noticably more detailed, and the system has a lot more capacity for texture detail.
Chrono Trigger has 14 endings btw.
Endings aren't all that bad; it's the movies of the endings that are hard on the portable.
Now, let's look at some screen shots, shall we?
http://www.rpgfan.com/pics/ff3-ds/ss-001.jpg
http://i.neoseeker.com/screenshots/R2FtZXMvUGxheXN0YXRpb24vUm9sZS1QbGF5aW5nL0ZhbnRhc3 k=/final_fantasy_vii_image31.jpg
The static backgrounds in FF7 are quite impressive -- but they're static pictures.
Now compare the actual models.Compare the arm models in FF7 to the arm models in FF3. Or compare the textures... Oh, wait. There are no textures in FF7, only shaded, colored, polygons.
And you were saying, with evident sincerity, that FF7's graphics were way, way, better than the DS's graphics. But, when we actually LOOK at them, the comparison goes very, very, far the other way.

I have the original SNES version, with box and instructions and everything, in great shape too. Cost a good 85$ a few years ago, well worth it. I also own the PS1 version, which is good, but load times were annoying, although short...... the cartridge SNES version is the ultimate.
Absolute classic top game. I might get the DS version (the DS is the only hand held I own), but maybe not..... I'm excited to see the game come back, hopefully to get a new generation into it.
