OK, so I was just watching a Blu-Ray movie when my PS3 beeped and went off. The red light on the front cam on and started blinking. So I tried pressing it and it beeped again and went onto a solid red light. Then I press it again and it comes up with the green light for about a second and then does onto a yellow light and finally a blinking red light again... WTF happened???

Does it not turn on anymore? It sounds like something has failed. I've never seen a yellow light before, you should call Sony.

No its because your PS3 Overheated.

How to Fix:

Open it up yourself and clean out any dust you see (Not recommended)

Take it to a Game Stop or whatever and ask them to clean it

I have a question. I also just tried watching a BD on my 40GB PS3, but when I turned the thing on, I get the sound (optical cable running from PS3 to reciever) but no picture (connected through HDMI), just a black screen. I tried switching HDMI cables, but I'm still just seeing a black screen.

Any thoughts on what might of happened?

I say give it a rest for some hours. Unplug everything and let your PS3 rest totally unplugged from anything. Tried that once with my computer when it woulnd't turn on...Weird as it sounds, worked. Maybe as someone said above, it might have overheated, but I didn't know PS3s did that when overheating.

Well okay, but it's the first time I turned the console on since Thursday, so it overheating would be very weird.

I'm pretty sure it overheated, give it some rest for a while.

You shouldn't jack his thread, but to answer your question...
While the PS3 if off, press and hold the power button until you hear a second beep.

I think overheating sounds about right, it had gotten quite dusty until I cleaned a couple of days ago.

Still, I left it off without any power overnight but didin't do any good, I'm off to call Sony now.

EDIT: OK I called Sony and they said they were going to exchange it, no problems there but i just have two more questions and then this thread can be locked

1. The person at Sony said that I could get all the stuff off my HDD and copy it onto my PC with a USB Caddy hooked up ot my computer or something? Where would I be able to find one and what would I have to do?

2. Will my trophies and everything still be on my ID when I get my new console back..

Thanks for any help ;)

I'm in the UK so no Best Buy's over here.

Sam_from_Space said that I should get a USB powered one that would fit a 2.5" HDD, would this one do the trick?

Sorry for posting this in two threads but the exchange is coming on Tuesday and I need to copy my data on to it before that.

EDIT: I also need to know how I copy it over, +rep to anyone who helps ;)

Yes, that HD enclosure should work well. I just bought one very similar when I upgraded my HD.

All you need to do is format the HD and use the Backup Utility, which may present a problem though if your PS3 doesn't turn on still. Can you get it to turn on?

If not, I'm not sure what you can do to prevent the losing of your data, unfortunately. Without being able to turn it on, I'm not sure that there is any way to access that data. It sounds to me like the Sony rep 'gave you the brush off' with that answer.

And no, you will lose ALL of your data if you can't get it backed up (trophies I'm not 100% on but I THINK that you will lose them as you can earn them when not online so it must be HD-based, not net-based) except anything saved elsewhere (basically, PSN-related stuff like gamestats and your actual PSN account).

As far as I know there's no way to recover data without turning your PS on. Sorry mate but you may be replaying some games when you get the new one...
