hey guys, well I know this guy who lives near from where I live, the other day we were talking about the PS3 and he said that the PS3's bluray uses triple layer making the ps3 work twice as hard and that the ps3 doesn't last that much and that why is he prefers the 360, I just wanna ask you guys how much of what he said is truth? also can someone explain to me why the bluray driver is slower?

1. No, the PS3's BD drive is not triple layer
2. The PS3 works no harder than the 360
3. The Blu-ray drive is not technically slower at all...

you asked for it...

1. THe PS3 uses a 2x Blu-ray drive, capable of reading both single and dual layer Blu-ray discs...frankly there are no triple layer BD's out there to even want the PS3 to be TL...

2. I'm not really sure how to get technical with this one...you're friend said it worked harder because of the triple layer drive...that is false, so in turn this is false...

3. 2x Blu-ray Drive (72Mbps(9MB/s))
Single Layer (2x CLV) - Constant Linear Velocity (Same speed across entire disk)
Double Layer - Couldn't find any data but no games have been released on a double layer yet.

Entire Blu-ray Disk is read at 9MB/s.

12x DVD-Rom Drive SL (9.25MB/S-15.85MB/s(AVG ~8x(10.57MB/s) DL (4.36MB/s-10.57MB/s(AVG ~6x(7.93MB/s)
SL(DVD-5) 12x Max (5-12x Full CAV) - Constant Angular Velocity (Speed Varies from edge to edge)
DL(DVD-9) 8x Max (3.3-8x Full CAV) - Constant Angular Velocity (Speed Varies from edge to edge)

SL DVD is 1.57MB/s > SL Blu-ray
DL DVD is 1.07MB/s < SL Blu-ray

Majority of 360 games are on DVD-9.

I think your friend is jealous. None of that is true. The 360 actually works harder than the PS3, because the PS3 has more advanced hardware.

Ok, at the risk of rising to flame bait, I'll bite on this.

First of all, there is no official triple layer Blu-Ray out yet although it's been talked about and supposedly the PS3 can use it with a firmware update. As Metfanant replied, you can clearly see the comparison between the optical drives. The dual layer DVD drive is technically "faster" in that it spins faster, but in actual data transfer speeds the Blu-ray drive enjoys a speed advantage over dual layer disks which is what 360 titles are using.

The guaranteed built in Hard Drive also provides some great potential for developers to do some fancy tricks as they can count on every PS3 having one, unlike other consoles.

As far as the PS3 not lasting as long? Well, there have not been widespread reports of PS3's overheating and bricking while there was a known design flaw with the 360 that did this. Varying reports of whether or not Microsoft has fixed the problem completely but it IS clear that things have at least greatly improved as far as Microsoft's manufacturing.

Bottom line, I'd say that none of these items your "friend" is bringing up are reasons to choose one console or another. It's about the GAMES and what the GAMES can do. To that end, it matters very little if an optical drive is faster or not or how memory is used, etc. You should base your judgement on how the games play and if you like them.

If you want to be a little mean, take him to go look at Metal Gear Solid 4 on an HD TV and see if he's seen anything like that. :)

Seriously though, don't worry about this kind of thing. It's not valid. On the other hand as I pointed out, it isn't truly a valid argument to say "PS3 rules!" because of the blu-ray transfer speed, etc, because again, it's about the games.

Just enjoy what you have. IF it's a matter of simply educating someone about misperceptions like those you stated, then fine. However, if someone just wants to believe what they believe, arguing about it is likely a waste of time.
