OK, so now PS3 has "trophies" - a direct answer to Xbox 360s achievements. The thing is, just like achievements, I fail to see what all the fuss is about. I just read this on IGN and it kinda' sums things up for me:
I'm currently working towards gathering a handful of the random Super Stardust HD Trophies, like collecting five shields when I already have one equipped, and racking up 20 bombs. Those are things I would never had tried to do outside of a scheme like this, so it's cool that Trophies have given me more challenges than a survival time and high score.
Those are things he would have never tried to do. Why? Largely because it's a pointless thing to do otherwise. OK, I appreciate it's not all about doing something for the sake of it, but I hardly consider that giving games an extra level of replay value. It's not like the "challenge" wasn't there in the first place, it's just that he never thought of doing it, for obvious reasons.
I guess I'm just showing my age when it comes to this kiind of stuff. I simply see these as a bragging tool, which doesn't interest me in the slightest. I like to like think I am capable of enjoying the games in the way I want, rather than having prescribed challenges. Plus, I've totally lost the competitive element when it comes to gaming.
I know I know, they are here, people dig it, and I'm cool with that. Just giving you my take on things!

Yup, the old saying, "Different strokes for different folks" comes to mind. I too couldn't give a rats about custom in-game music, again, preferring to enjoy the music that the developers spent thousands of pounds on in developing/licensing.

yeh its good to see someone arguing the other side. Im kinda with you, on the fence about it all. dont get me wrong, if i like a game allot and the achievemnts are something i find amusing then il lgo for them, and when done like that they really do rock. Like the ideas of the ones in stardust, they seem really cool, but i love stardust, so it makes sense.
if you looks at my score on the 360 most of them are just from playing through a game and completing it like normal, some are really going for it. i think oblivionw as the only game i wanted every achievemnt and got the 1000k, i loved doing that!
so yeah sometimes i absolutley love them, its just down to how well they are used.
I mean, you say old school gamer, but dont you remember back in the day, lol, me and you can relat, when you were young. I used to MAKE up stuff like this all the time, not shoot a bullet for a few minutes and try and hide from swarms of enemys, run through an entire level of a game without shooting etc. Me and my mates loved doing stuff like that.

A person might argue that your post count and skill points on this forum are pointless bragging tools. You could spend all day explaining the intricacies of how they tell a story about you as a poster, but he'll never accept it until one day he discovers a use for them himself.

I think trophies add new layers to games.
Games you thought were boring now became additive.

I am loving the trophies for SSHD and can't wait til more games get them. I think it is a great addition by Sony even if no games support this feature yet as it makes me addicted to the games knowing I can achieve something and then show it off to my friends but I respect your opinion and that maybe trophies arn't for everyone.

It sells games. I bought SSHD just for trophies, its a good game, but i wouldve never tried it if it didnt support trophies.
On Xbox 360 people buy games like King Kong and Fight Night because it gives them easy achievements.

Doing soem of the trophies will increse your skill, like in a FPS like UT3 for example
"kill 3 enemies ina row with shock balls" (twhen u sue alt fire then blo it up with primary.)
Maybe some of youcna already do this but for those that never even thought about it.
"rocket jump 100yards"
Its liek the challenges in Timesplitters they add longevity to the game.
For those that have games that use trophies do the trophies pop up to inform you the instant you win them?

I agree, I sucked at SSHD, couldn't even do the first planet but because of trophies I have played it alot more and doing challenges like save the bombs has made me just to rely on skill and shooting and I feel I am now alot better at the game
And yes, you get a pop up at the top right hand corner of your screen when you unlock a trophy.
