View Full Version : Problem With FF8 Disc *Please Help*

I've just finished disc two of Final Fantasy VIII, so naturally the screen says "please insert disc three". But once I do that, it says "Wrong Disc!".

Luckily, it asked me to save the game before the disc change, so I had done that. So I tried restarting the console entirely. But when I did that and inserted the third disc of FF8, nothing comes up. I mean at first, the PS1 logo comes up as normal(perhaps indicating that there's nothing wrong with the disc), but then there's nothing but a black screen there.

I tried pressing the PS Home button and it comes up, I can choose to quit the game or whatever, but other than that it's completely black and I can't do anything.

The problem is not that the disc is scratched or dirty because I checked like a million times and it looks like heaven.

What could the problem be? I'd really appreciate some help, because I've come all the way to the third disc of the game and I'd like to continue it as soon as possible.

The problem with Final Fantasy VIIII is that it plays with noticeable issues on the PS3 currently unfortunately, this is as far as I know anyway. Seems to be a problem with the emulator, not much advice I can offer i'm afraid if your absolutely sure it's not the disc.

That is weird, the problem may be disc related though. Have you ever played that actual game disc 3 before (on another system) and it worked?

You could try it on a different system or a try a different copy of the game.
Doesn't really answer your question but something to try...

My PAL non plat ff8 doesnt even work on my ps3, and its not scratched and perfect discs and none of them work, i guess sony just gave up on BC when the lame 40Gb came out.

I'll check my copy tonight. I have been playing VII and IX without any issues so far. Maybe its just a VIII thing.
I have a 40GB, and I would not consider it 'lame'.
My ps2 works fine, no reason to spend an extra $100 on an emulator for games that I can play already...

If you check Sony's official PS3 backwards compatibility list it's like I said above, it plays with noticeable issues.

I'd say not loading a disc is more then a noticable issue. That would put it in the non-playable category don't you think?

I have a PAL 60Gig PS3 and Disc 2 works while Disc 1, 3 and 4 do not work. Annoying as FF8 is the one FF game I want to replay again. I hope Sony fixes it soon anyway, was hoping the 2.36 firmware would have.

@Phaded - I'm 100% sure the CD is in perfect shape. I bought the game recently and haven't even touched the third disc before now. But who knows, it could be the problem.

@daevv - Unfortunately, I don't own a PS1 or PS2, so I can't really try the disc on a different console(unless there's another one?).

@manje10 - Well, the first and second CDs worked perfectly fine for me, and I can get into the New Game/Load Game menu in the fourth one with no problem... It's just the third one. >_<

@Cross - Thanks for that. Now I know I'll be able to play IX without this problem. :)

So the only option I have is to get a new CD3?
Let's say I own a PS2, would I be able to transfer my save state from the PS3 to the PS2 and continue on there?

Strange, all my FF8 discs work - I played through the entire game on my PAL 40GB a few months ago

I have an NTSC 60gig. I'll check my FFVIII discs when I get home

I heard somewhere that only platinum FF8 works on the ps3.

Can someone tell me if....

They have a NON platinum FF8 working on a 60GB UK PAL ps3 please?

If they do could you give the the SLES number please on the case, then i can check if its just my version, i know its not the game cos it works fine on my friends ps2 :(

Well I am not in the UK, but my version is non-platinum. I'll post here with the results from all discs...
