Hey, I'm new here. I just recently picked myself up the PS3/MGS4 pack. Been having loads of fun.

Just yesterday I decided to get an HDMI cord for my PS3 since that seems to be the way to go for the highest quality, but I am having some trouble. I would appreciate help. I'll try to be as specific as I can.

I have been using some HD component cables, and they work fine. Things looked great. Just wanted to see what HDMI could do. As my TV is HDMI ready, I went for it.

When I try to use HDMI with my PS3, I get no picture, or I get crazy static. Whether it is static or a blank screen just seems random. Sometimes when I turn on the PS3 I get static, other times I get just a black screen. Normally the screen is that normal strong blue color when it is getting no signal, so at least the black screen means SOMETHING is happening.

My PS3 is updated. I have reseated the connection multiple times. Tried restarting a couple different ways as I read on the net. Tried a couple things with my tv. Doesnt work.

If I stay on the composite channel when I turn it on with HDMI plugged in, it tells me it has detected an HDMI enabled device and asks me if I want to use it. I select yes. The screen goes black. I switch over to the HDMI channel, all there is is a black or static screen.

I've also noticed that when on the HDMI channel, its at a really odd resolution. My tv always displays the resolution of the signal its getting underneath the channel number display. If i'm getting a regular analog signal, it tells me 480. If i'm on an HD digital channel, it tells me 1080. When I'm on the HDMI channel with the PS3 plugged in and turned on, it tells me 722x1028@28Hz.

It may just be my tv, but I come for you to help. It's not a good brand, but it was great for it's money and I haven't run into trouble with it before. It is a 720p tv, but its actual resolution is 1440 x 900. As the site says, "1440 x 900 pixel resolution supports 720p signals." According to the manual, while being 720p, it accepts 1080p resolution signals. I suppose it just downscales it or something, because it does indeed work when I set my PS3 or 360 to 1080 resolutions, even though it is a 720p tv. It doesnt just go black like i would expect.

Here is a link to my TV model. (http://www.dynexproducts.com/pc-604-23-dynex-19-720p-widescreen-flat-panel-lcd-hdtv.aspx)

Here is a link to some picture I took of the static and the odd resolution. (http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g132/wasoha/HDMI.jpg)

Any help would be much appreciated. I've never even seen HDMI used before, but it would be really nice to try! :D

OK, is your 360 plugged up HDMI also? Or is it just component?

No, no HDMI for the 360. That just uses component. I was all component before this (I actually think my 360 is too old to even be HDMI capable).

It could be an issue with a bad HDMI port on the TV. Do you have any other devices that use HDMI? Maybe a DVD player?

Nothing! Sorry. This is my first try at HDMI.

Have you done the hard reset with the PS3 (hold down power for 5-10 secs), then it auto detects cables audio etc?

I can try it if I have time. I actually got this with a return of another item. Doing it again might piss them off :)

Any other suggestions?

I think I have an answer to your problems. It seems your tv can only produce a 720p resolution, so you will have to set your ps3 and etc. to that. I had a similar problem with my tv, tried to set it too high and the tv can't go that high. Also note that your tv uses the (p)arallel side, note the p; instead of (i)nterlaced like mine. So if you ever upgrade it you'll have to stick to using the p type. Oh! You should also be able to go to 480p, but 720p still kicks its but. Hope this works.:snicker

Yes, that is indeed true. A 720p set can not handle a 1080p signal the same way an old standard TV could not handle a progressive signal from some DVD players. I set my PS3 to 1080i and that is best for most cases. Some games with lots of action might look a little better in 720p since progressive results in a cleaner image if it is changing quickly, otherwise the 1080i is superior.

There is a good blurb on it here:

Seems like the HDMI cable itself is busted.

Hi, I have a Plasma Akai tv and I purchased a HDMI/DVI conversion cable because it didnt have the spot to put the HDMI cable in the tv. When I connect the cables and turn on the ps3, it says "An available HDMI device was detected. Do you want to output video and audeo using HDMI?" I click yes and nothing happens, the screen just stays blank. I also turned off the ps3 and turned it back on while holding the power button until the second beep came and it still didn't work. I think I might have the same problem as blackout but I am not sure. If I do can anyone explain to me how to fix it because I am not sure how to setup my ps3 probably since I just bought it and never used an HDMI before. I would appreciate it alot, thank you.

This is the link for the tv I have:

I'm not sure what is completely going on here but I do know that DVI is unable to input sound at all. It is strictly a video connection (usually used with computer monitors). That being said, you should still see a picture (just no sound). Also, you going to want to choose to NOT output both video and audio, only video. That may be the problem.

Also, as with the original poster, are you certain you are not outputting 1080p from your PS3 over the HDMI. Your TV will be unable to handle a signal at that resolution. You should change the output to 1080i (the max your TV can handle).

Also (but minor), check if your TV is HDCP compliant. According to your link of your TV, I don't think it is. I have heard rumors that the PS3 looks for this but I am not certain. It may just be active when playing BD movies.

How would I change the output to 1080i? Do I have to do this through the ps3 or the tv. If it is the ps3 where do I go? Thx

Change it in the PS3 settings in your system settings. I am going from memory here but I think there was an option for display resolution. Look around in the settings menu, it should be obvious.
