Hello,

I read a thread in the forum that says PS3 games are region free,
Meaning, every PS3 game will work in both NTSC and PAL.

But play.com sells PS3 games that ARE NOT region free.
Check out the following link:

http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/1022294/Metal-Gear-Solid-4-Guns-Of-The-Patriots/Product.html

(end of the page where it says "technical details")
It says it's PAL and will not work in NTSC devices.

How could this be?
Thanks!

PAL and NTSC require different TV specs. For HDTV these dont apply.

All games are region free.

And yet, play.com says this game (PS3 Blu-Ray CD) is PAL.
How can that be?

Because its for PAL TV's, they run at 50hz? And NTSC runs at 60hz? Thats what I believe anyways.

Because on SD-tv there's a difference. Pal TV's have a signal of 576i and NTSC has 480i.
Running a PAL game on a NTSC system will not work. NTSC-games on a PAL system do work as long as your tv supports it.

For the HD-tv both in PAL and NTSC regions the resolution is the same. So if you have a HD-tv, there's no issue whatsoever.

hay guys, i actually know the answer to this one ( which is unusual ) sony haven't region coded ps3 games yet but they probably will at some point because the game cases have region codes on them which is why play.com list them.

What on Earth gave you that idea?
They all have region codes on the covers. It's because of the SD-tv resolution and for some games they have online options that are not worldwide available. (Region locked servers).
It has nothing to do with a region lock (like you imply).

Just to make sure i'm correct.
I'm planning on buying a new PS3 today.

I have a Sony Bravia KDL-32U3000 (HD Ready) that can display PAL and NTSC. and I am going to buy the PS3 NTSC Version and plug it using the HDMI cable.

I will be able to play every PS3 game there is, Right?
Even the ones from Play.com?

Thank you.

You can play games from any region, even Japaenese games.. though they wont make much sense unless you can read them ;).

Bringing back a dead thread:

So if I were to play my NTSC game on my PAL PS3 using my SDTV that is 13 years old - it won't be able to play it?

Another question - it's better off to buy an offline game that doesn't have any online options (Assassin's Creed/Ratchet and Clank) as they won't have a chance of region locked servers?

Many thanks.

Well, if you're TV is that old - chances are it will be 50hz? So no is the short answer I'm afraid. Worth a try though ;).

If you like online gaming, get an online game. Simple enough, don't care about the servers, as long as your ping is 120 or less everything will be fine. Also only some games have server lock, MGO does for example but CoD4 doesnt.

Another Newbie here with a quick question. I bought a PS3 60gb at Christmas, and my boyfriend is currently in the US for a couple of weeks. If he buys PS3 games from there, will they work also on the PS3 bought in the UK? if they are all region free, then my guess is yes, but just wanted to find out if anyone has done this and it's been ok?

I asked him to look into getting Rock Band as I don't know when it's released here on PS3 but he's worried he'll bring it all the way back and it won't work!

Thanks for any help :D
