i have been away from the forums for the past weeks because my 9 month 60 GB PAL PS3 broke..
that happened the day i bought uncharted and played for 1.5 hours.. during gameplay, suddenly a sound effect was looping and i thought it was best to re-start the game.. i pressed the home button and quit. at this moment the console froze. i pressed the eject button on the console and it bipped twice and the console re-started itself.
after this, the console never read a single disc again..
i was pissed off, i bought a game in that day and the console broke!!!! and i never got all the cars of prologue, and i havent finished f1 CE either.
every article i see about MGS4, i stay away afraid of spoilers.. i have many things to do nowadays but not being able to play my daily hour or two is kind of driving me mad. i am pissed.
when i went to the store i bought the console, they said i should give a call to sony and deal directly with them and that within 2 weeks the problem would be solved.
sony were great, they took the console the next day but unfortunatelly, they said that 5 weeks were the timeframe to solve the problem.
6 weeks have passed and i called them again and they told me they are with suply issues bla bla bla and they don't even know when these issues will be solved.
i know that the shipment will come from Spain (i live in Portugal) but i think that 6 weeks is already too much. what you think i should do? i think its unfair that in some places 2 weeks are enough while in other places 6 weeks are gone and i don't even know when i will have my console back.
besides, the idea of having a refurbished model isn't appealing.
can i ask sony my money back? i am not happy with this service and i bought the 60 GB model for the BC gaming. i paid 600 euros for the system and now i can't play for 1.5 months.. and i don't know how much more time i have to wait.
do you think sony will refund my 600 euros back? i don't think its fair to trade a 600 euro 60 GB for a 400 euro 40 GB so i would like to take my money and go and buy a 40 GB model, and still have the 200 euros for MGS4.
any advice, tips, anything?
i have been patient until now but is enough. i am tired of waiting.

Hrmm.....I doubt you'll get your money back. Not after 9 months unless you turn on a REAL tantrum. Rock and hard place unfortunately. Was kind of inevitable with the turn around of SKU's.

6 weeks???? Dam, thats bad.
I thought Sony do a 24hour turnaround in europe? Or has the broken PS3's numbers got so high that its no longer able to offer this service?

If i were u, i would first make sure they could fix it ( cause you'll never know, they could be holding it there and may turn around and say they cant repair it). If not, i would then ask them if they could send a 80 gig with metal gear, since u waited so long.

Why not just have a refurb? they're generally as good as new and you won't have to wait so long

What they should do is just send a new on eout then fix the broken one if possible but no that costs money
I suggest you make a nuisance of your self, keep ringing up every day if need be unil you recieve it back.

I don't think there's much you can do apart from waiting, calling Sony, writing a letter of complaint and contact a national consumer support union. It's not the first time I heard things like 6 weeks for 60GB PAL consoles. I'm glad mine is working fine *knocks on wood*. Apparently there were some issues with the stock of the 60GB model parts.
But most of the problems are caused by defective lasers and I don't see why they can't just swap the BD-drive... but I'm not an technician at Sony...
I hope it gets returned to you soon.

É o que dá viver me Portugal meu amigo! Tambem sou TUGA.
The problem is that Portugal and other countries do not have PS3 repair shops. That means that they have to send your PS3 to Spain or France for repair.
On top of that you (and I) have a 60gb console wich surely hardens your problem to make them repair it! They dont make them anymore so they have to get parts from stock!
Patience my friend!

Sorry to hear about this man especially during Uncharted!
This is the third thread in 2 hours where a different individual has reported his PS3 failing...
I hope Sony get things sorted for you man, I remember you being excited and all too!
Not wanting to make things worse but my friends 60Gb failed and Sony basically told him they no longer make them here so he'll be given a new 40Gb (there goes PS2 playback) and money back to cover the difference. He was given $180aud.

$999 - $699 = $300. They must be charging $120 for the repairs then?

Well you really cant expect that a 60gig is still worth 999! I paid that & know its not worth that much now! I think it was a fair deal, sort of!

The problem isn't that the PS3 died, the problem is that they have discontinued a product line and now have no way of actually replacing the original. In that particular instance, I would be demanding the full $300 difference. If both were still available, and the customer had said no it's ok send me a 40gb I don't want a replacement 60gb' then you would expect to cop some sort of charge for the hassle. But it's not even an option, they are basically saying 'we can't replace you're current unit so we'll give you a watered down version and charge you for the hassle.'
That doesn't strike me as 'fair.'
A7MAD if I were you're mate, I would be ringing ACCC about that one. It doesn't sound right to me.

I think he's reported it with VCat, I'd have to ask him but he was mighty pissed.

VCat? Never heard of them, whose that?
They are the Victorian Civil & Administrative Tribunal (http://www.vcat.vic.gov.au/CA256DBB0022825D/HomePage?ReadForm&1=Home~&2=~&3=~)
VCAT deals with disputes about:

discrimination
domestic building works
guardianship and administration
disability services
legal profession services
residential and retail tenancies and owners corporations (body corporate)
consumer credit.
VCAT also deals with disputes between people and government (State/Local) in areas such as:
planning and land valuation
licences to carry on businesses (including medical professionals, travel agents, motor car traders and others)
State taxation
many other government decisions (such as Transport Accident Commission decisions and Freedom of Information issues).

yesterday i called and the guy was telling me the same old stuff, no stock, etc etc.
i said that i had waited long enough and either i will have my situation solved within a week or i wanted my money back. he said he coudn't do anything bla bla, they don't refund the money, etc.. i then asked to talk with the manager and explained all the stuff again.
the manager started with the crappy talk all over again and i read an article from our Portuguese law over the phone, that says, that if a product has flaws, the consumer has the right to have it replaced within 30 days. clearly this is not happening to ANYONE (the portuguese forums have guys that wait 9 weeks).
i said that i didn't want any trouble and i like sony products but if my case isn't solved from a week from tomorrow (making 7 weeks, which is more than enough time), i will not be still and that they have to answer for this. the conversation lasted for almost an hour but i really don't know if they will solve it within this timeframe.
the manager even said that sony wasn't exepecting to sell so much consoles and they can't replace them so fast.. i said that that is between you and sony, i have nothing to do with it.. i just want my problem solved in the next week. he even said that sony is first in europe (its not, nintendo sold more consoles) and he said we have different sources.. he tried to manouver several times but i wasn't soft. i will give an update to see if this has any development.
thanks for making me grow the balls.
the phone talk had many more details but the main part is here.

Well, I think it's rather brave to call them and demand a solution. There are plenty of people who in the end don't actually make the call.
And thanks for the update. I hope it gets solved soon.

I had the exact same problem as you and had to wait 9 weeks. And now the great part: the delivered PS3 was broken!! Now I have to wait another 9 weeks...but had the shop lend me a 40GB for the time of the repair.
Be patient and ask for free games...you´ll get them. I did.

Just call Sony and kindly ask them to fix it. Then, when that doesn't work, yell at them :)

just came from the store. i demanded my money back and they said it coudn't be done, etc. they offered me the 40 gb pack and i refused. i always demanded my money.
it was a "fight" of almost 1 hour with the store manager but i've got this:
-ps3 40 gb brand new with 2 more years with warrant, starting today
-1 sixaxis
-metal gear solid 4
-the difference to make it to 600 euros in money.
i also kept the other 2 sixaxis and everything that came with the 60gb ps3.
i was thinking and i probably made a good deal even if i compare what the 60 gb version has in comparison with what the 40 gb does not have..
if i want, i can easily upgrade the hard drive to 200 or 250 gb. also, i never used the card slots in the 60 gb version. 2 usb's is enough too.
it is also rumoured that software emulation for ps2 games might be coming for 40 gb models so its not that bad. besides, i already played my ps2 collection more than enough.
also, if i have another problem, maybe the 40 gb is easier to trade thans the 60 gb model is.
in the end i think i made a good deal.
thanks for listening to me. what do you think about this deal?
regards
