Hi guys I would really appreciate it if ANYONE can help me here with this issue. I have searched google for days and I am going bonkers!!!!!!!!!! First I tried installing mkv2vob and it gave me an error saying "Installation ended prematurely because of an error". Then I installed PS3 Video 9 and guess what: It takes 15 hours to convert an .MKV 4.6GB to something that can be viewed on a PS3. Is there a FASTER way? Thanx!!

Theres plenty of ways. The best one would be to get a better computer. Quad and dual cores ftw. Second, you could just stream the movie from your computer to PS3, but transferring that big of a movie without streaming to a PS3 would take much time and at least an 8gig flash drive.

Well, there are programs that stream games and movies from your PC to your PS3. Google it and you will probably find them. I myself haven't used them, but i know of their existance.
If i were you i would upgrade my processor. 2.5GHz+ would be a great increase in performance, but make suer your motherboard can support it.

**Note this is for putting the movie onto the PS3 Hard Drive**
If your like me and want to bring your HD backups wherever you go and don't want to stream. You can use this program called Mkv2Vob. Load it up, click configuration select .Vob as output file and encode whatever you like. If the file is already encoded with Xvid or X264 select those if not just go with Mpeg-2. Select the file you want and click add file. Once its done, change the extension from .Vob to .Mpeg so the PS3 can read it. EX. filename.vob to filename.mpeg.. You can use Red Kawa File Server to download the movies to PS3 HD via PS3's web browser.
**Note this is for putting the movie onto the PS3 Hard Drive**
Quick How-to for Red Kawa File Server.
Download and Install program
Go to F:\Program Files\Red Kawa\File Server\core
Make a new folder named Files
Put your filename.mpeg s into that folder
Open Red Kawa File Server and click Launch File Server
Go to your PS3 web browser and type in the IP Address plus Port plus /files
Ex. http://192.168.x.xx:8192/files (DON'T FORGET http:// ) For future use, save that to your bookmarks.
Highlight over the movie, don't press X, instead highlight and press TRIANGLE > File > Save Target > Hard Drive.
Thats all there is.

As I mentioned I CANNOT install mk2vob for some reason. Also I just used a program called GOTsent and I converted .MKV to Mpeg4 but that program took almost 2 hours to convert 4.36 GB movie. Also when I open the Mpeg 4 movie, I get really slow frames  Looks like I will have to just watch my movies on my PC :(

Have you tried downloading Mkv2vob from a different site. Or try installing it in safe mode.
Like JOHN25 said, you could just connect your PC directly to your HDTV and watch it there.

tsMuxeR software. Download here
(http://www.bitburners.com/software/smartlabs-tsmuxer/4018/)
The conversion process using tsMuxeR is a very simple one. It consists of adjusting a few settings, which you can see highlighted in the screenshot on the right.
The video or audio content is not actually converted at all. All tsMuxeR does is that it extracts (demuxes) the video and audio from the Matroska .MKV file and wraps them (muxes) to a .ts transport stream format. The video or audio remain untouched, so the quality is not impacted and the process is very fast.
Perform the following steps:
Open a .MKV file with AVC/AC3 content using the Add button
Observe the track info for AVC profile information. If it shows a value higher than 4.1, then use the Change level function to adjust it down to 4.1
Choose TS muxing as Output
Click browse button and choose the name and location for your file
Click Start muxing to begin
After a few minutes you should have files named filename.ts. Now all you need to do is to burn the .TS file on a DVD-R(W), or transfer via RedKawa to your PS3.
i was converted and played around 10 .mkv movies without any problem.
Im using Nero Burning ROM to write the files. DVD-ROM (UDF/ISO) compilation whit UDF 2.01 File system version.

if you cannot install the program then there are some issues somewhere in your PC...personally i'd back up my files and do a fresh install of Windows...chances are there is more up than just not being able to install this single file...

Just use a flash usb drive.
Vanquish23
June 23rd, 2008, 04:42 AM
A flash USB drive wouldn't work for an HD file, considering it's most likely over 4GB in size. Thus, the format of the flash drive would be NTFS which the PS3 does not read.
I think what krazyxazn said is the best technique at this time.

I have used flash drives and external hdds to transfer hd movies to my ps3.
4gbs, and 8gbs work well.

you can actually format it in hfs++ and it will read over the 4 gig file limit of fat, it's the apple file system used for ipods and such.

Did you stream the mp4 wired/wireless ? (there is a bug in the current firmware that causes MP4 play issues over the network)
You can always try to copy the mp4 to PS3 (just hit triangle and copy instead of play), which should fix play issues. (or select the mux to vob option in GOTSent, which prevents the mp4 bug from happening)
Further more.. converting to 4 GB mp4 or m2ts, even on a slow P3 system should take no more then an hour. It is mostly limited by disk-speed.

Allright guys I tried using Gotsent again and this time it took exactly 30 mins to covert 4.7GB .MKV movie to Mpeg 4 but again I get SLOW frames and no SOUND. ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now before I go and buy something to transfer the media with I want to make sure the media is playing flawlessly on my PC and right now it in not. And yes I have mux to vob selected, Is there something I am missing here?

Unfortunately the PS3 only reads disks with the FAT32 file system  I just spent the best part of a couple of evenings reformatting my brand new external USB HD.
If the file you wan't to watch is in AVI format (or any other format the PS3 can read, that is everything but MKV) you can quickly split it into multiple parts by using VirtualDub (here's a good how to: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/cut_avi_with_virtualdub.cfm)
To convert MKV files, beside the already mentioned GotSent and mkv2vob, you could try the following out:
- ps3video9 (http://ps3-video-9.en.softonic.com/)
- MediaCoder (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/) would be possibly the most powerful one but has currently some known issues with mkv files. Let's keep an eye on future updates
VLC itself could also be a viable option for converting but the conversion time is likely to be long.

You have a better PC than me, and i can stream HD content perfectly. So you should be able to aswell.
To stream you will need a bit of software, the best i have used is Tversity it also happens to be free. Its very easy to setup and then once done you will be able browse and play your video, photos and music stored on your PC or network without having to transcode (but if you do Tveristy will do it on the fly)
On the downside you do need to have the PC on to do this

Someone tried to put a AVCHD image on a memory stick? I think of following the guide in http://www.bitburners.com/articles/create-avchd-discs-with-subtitles-using-tsmuxer/4047/ but not burn on a disc but rather put the files on a memory stick,

If the output file is too big for DVD5. what would be best to use for Dual Layer (DVD9) -DL or +DL? I have a stack that never worked but I don't remember whether they were - or +
Also, someone mentioned UDF 2.01... isn't it 2.50? My files that do fit on DVD5 have always worked fine with UDF 2.50
For the MKV2VOB issue.. Do you have .NET 2 or over installed? Are you working on Vista?

Video conversion is a pain!!!
Too much codecs and too much software inconpatibleties!!!!
Better to do is connect your laptop via DVI to your HD set.

MKV2VOB does not encode the video at all, only takes half an hour at most to get it into PS3 compatible form.
As a post above me said, get MS Framework, you might need v1.1 as well as v2.0.

I play DVDrips and Bluray rips straight from my laptop. All you need to do is connect PC/laptop to the TV and it solves all these transfering/streaming etc problems.
If you have a HDTV use a DVI --> HDMI cable.

Dual and quad core PCs are nice, but unfortunately many of the video converter programs are not multi-threaded, so they can only use 1 core. I would suggest finding a different program.

OK so I installed winavi and I chose "DVD" option and I converted MKV files to Mpeg BUT when I play it, the size is small :( It asks convert: WMV, AVI, DVD etc on the main screen but not MKV. Can you guys be more specific please? My main issue right now is converting MKV to something PS3 can play. MKV2VOB does not install, GOTsent did not work PS3 video 9 takes hours, and now this ********!!!!!!!!!!!!

You did not have to waste 14 hours converting your mkv file. You should have just demuxed the audio and video, which most likely are compatible with the ps3 and then just put them in a mp4 container. But from what i've seen with people, they don't really know how to do this and I'm not the tutorial writing type so I'll link you to a good place to learn about demuxing and muxing and all that stuff.

For ANYBODY not understanding the FAT/NTFS thing as regards the ps3, just use `SWISSKNIFE` (google it).... no need to split hdds/large usb mem or any other crap i keep reading, i`ve formatted 500GB Fat32 with it, ps3 loves it !!

I'm hoping someone can help me here, before I go nuts. I have been trying to play movies/tv shows downloaded on the PS3. I have bought a 16GB flash drive which I think isn't actually 16GB, but that may be something else entirely.
Most of the stuff I download is Xvid or DivX, the latter is supposed to be playable. But when I put these on the drive they wouldn't work properly, kept coming up with corrupted data or unsupported.
After reading some stuff on here and elsewhere, I downloaded and used PS3 Video 9 and managed to convert the files to work on the PS3.
However when I put them on the flash drive it is only showing 2 or 3 of the movies, usually the first couple I put on. Even if I delete them and re-insert the other movies don't show. This is when I remembered summat about the flash drive only being able to see 4GB due to being FAT32.
So I downloaded SwissKnife and re-formatted the drive again, but it still shows just the first 2 movies. The drive showed on the program as being 16GB, but it won't let me use the full thing, no matter what I try.
Anyone shed any light on this at all?

do you want to transfer them? or just play them off the flash drive?Tried it both ways, it just doesn't see the files. Won't even play the files on the PC from the flash disc, even though they do from my hard drive. I can load it up to about 2gig, and that's it.
I think the drive I've been sold has been modified. Had an email from someone on ebay about it, saying folk have been somehow changing the capacity on the properties to make them seem larger. I loaded mine to capacity and thought it was OK, but it just seems to hold a couple of GB, then the rest is just file names or summat, hence no actual data to play.
Anyone know if there's a way to check the capacity properly?

well i can show you how to transfer the files from your PC to the PS3 without a flash drive if your HDD has enough free space....
where did you get this flash drive and how much did you pay for it?

£13.50 off eBay. If it's possible to do it without, that would save a lot of faffing about. Only want to do it because I have a 28" telly and it's better to watch stuff on there rather than my monitor.
