I own the 80GB PS3. At first I thought about upgrading the internal hard drive to lets say 250GB 5,400 RPM. Now I'm aiming for just adding an external hard drive.

I read that having a 7,200 RPM for your internal hard drive could cause damage to the HDD and PS3 due to heat or whatever. Well.. What if I use the 7,200 externally via USB. I guess it shouldn't cause damage. I don't know much so I wouldn't mind getting it confirmed.

When I install Linux, i'm assuming it'd be installed in the internal one. Am I correct?

oh. i use to think bigger hard drive for PS3 is useless. but considering i could play divx now. id rather store them on my ps3 and back up hard drive.

I actually don't believe that a 7200rpm internal drive will really cause damages to the PS3. Never heard real complaints, only rumors that it might... but if you want to be safe, stick with a 5400rpm drive.

As for external drives, it doesn't matter. If there's any heat problems, it will not affect the PS3.

And yes, Linux will be installed on the internal drive.

So if I wanted to use Linux on the PS3 as my main computer, would it be better to have an internal hard drive(connected via sata) or external(connected via USB).

Right now I'm assuming that I can't access/save files in the PS3's internal hard drive when using Linux. Am I wrong?

I'm thinking of just using my PS3 as my main computer. Some people might suggetsed having an external hard drive for the PS3 will just consume space and look ugly, but that doesn't really bother me much.
