I just bought a PS3 and one of the reasons was to use it as a multi media [player such as a Divx player. It is the 40gb console. I've played these movies in a Divx player and the computer. They work. I just tried it in my new console and it will read the title but when you try to play it it keeps saying the file is corrupted. Some of the discs I've tried won't even show a title. Whats going on?

As far as I know - PS3 still doesn't have Full support for all *.avi file codecs. It depends on how and with what software they are encoded.

Having the latest firmware will help - but won't guarantee that all divx / xvid files will play in your console. There is software available which will allow you to re-encode your movies in a format that the PS3 will play - a search of these forums should give you more info.

Does ps3 support Divx6 version files and the hd files cause my hd files won't play, just show the divx symbol at the bottom and then black screen. If I pause it does give me the first frame of the video.

Did you update your PS3 firmware? Maybe that could solve it cause AVI's files works perfectly on my PS3.

Recently I found this while searching for a program that would put subs into a divx file so that is could be played on the PS3, http://userxp.tripod.com/ both of these work well and fast, without any change in video quality, but first update the PS3's firmware, and if still doesn't work try the divxmediabuilder, to re-encode the file.
