I was curious who has made their old PS3 HDD into an external unit to use on their ps3 or computer.
What external enclosure did you buy? Links to pictures/site would be good.

When I get round to buying my 160GB HDD upgrade I am defo doing the same thing with a SATA caddy and making it a ext drive to back-up my music and files off my PC.

I bought an enclosure off ebay for about £10. USB and eSATA. Works great.
Here's a link with a good picture. Not who I bought it off, but the same unit, including the cables.

Anyone know what the specs have to be for an external caddy?
For example, would this one work? Amazon.co.uk: OMATA 2.5" hard drive case, super slim and outstanding design-Black - Sold By E W Link Co. Ltd: Electronics & Photo

When I upgrade to a 320GB I'll put the old PS3 HDD into my 2nd bay in my laptop.

Carl, the only specs that matter for a caddy to suit an old PS3 HDD are that it is for 2.5 inch (laptop) hard drives, it has a SATA (Serial ATA) connection, and it is USB (which they all will be).
As for whether or not I've done it, no because my 40Gb drive is still in my PS3 at the moment, but when it comes time to replace it I will almost certainly re-use it as an external drive - you can never have enough Gb of external storage IMO.

That looks like it will work. I have heard some problems with people who external cases dont work with the PS3.
