i was wondering what does an optical cable do.

You plug it into your amp, well that's in my case I think you can also plug it into some TV'S.

Anyway it's for sound and sounds awesome.

Some speaker systems (the better ones if i'm not mistaken) can be connected to your playstation3 with an optical cable. And as stoneyps3 said, it's for audio

Opitcal , also known as TOSLINK it is one way to deliver audio (digital) to audio components (receivers, TV's), it offers higher quality versus stereo RCA (Analog), and it can transmit 5.1 CH Dolby Digital/DTS audio, which RCA (A/V) "stereo" cables can not.
The next best thing is HDMI, which can deliver 7.1 CH audio in glorious HD.
