I have a 60gb model, not a launch model, this problem happened when starting a new game on MGS4.

I get through the install for Act 1 and the PMC commerical comes up and then it freezes, and in the top left hand corner I get 2 icons; a bluray disc, and a Question mark. Plus, my PS3 is making sounds like it's trying to read the disc. I wait a few moments, and it doesn't look like it's going to get anywhere so I pushed the PS button on my controller and selected quit game. I ended up having to lay my finger over the PS3 on/off button on the system until beeped to turn off because the system was stuck it seemed when quitting the game.

I turn the system back on and now no disc is being loaded, in the top right hand corner of the screen I get that small disc icon, like the PS3 has stopped reading discs. I tried other PS3 games to see if it was only MGS4, but it's not; PS2 games also don't work.

Is there a possible way of fixing this without having to send it in, or will I have to bite the bullet and send it in? I'm past the warranty too.

The only good thing is that I got to beat MGS4 before this happened.

That is the most common malfunction with the PS3, you are going to have to call Sony for a replacement. Just make sure you remove the disc from the drive, and backup your current HDD.

Heh, this is most likely a stupid question on my part. Since my PS3 is past it's warranty, is a receipt still needed? I've bought it online, and I had the receipt that came with it when it arrived, but I can't seem to find it; and Best Buy's site doesn't have the order on my history page anymore.

It wouldn't matter anyway something that expensive should last at least 3 years, you'll probably find if you ring them up and be as polite as possible you'll have a new one winging its way to you soon.

Ringing them is the only way to find out, if they don't mention how long you've had it don't mention it first.
