Well, my PS3 has been freezing a lot lately, especially during MGS4.
I got the game replaced, but the problem persists, so I know the problem is definitely with the system.
My brother also let me know that it froze on him a couple of times while playing GTA IV.
I have a 60GB, and I'm thinking that the problem is that my disc drive is crapping out on me.
I am still within the one year manufacturer warranty, but I also have a 3 year extended service plan from Target.
Which one do you think I should use?
Have any of you had the same problem? And if so, how long did it take Sony, or Target(if you got it from there), to get it back to you?
Any help/advice would be appreciated.
UPDATE: It also froze while I was watching a Blu-ray movie.
The wierd part is that I can still use the PS button to exit during both games and movies.
Its just not reading the discs either because of dust or a faulty drive.
I'm gonna try to get the Maxell Blu-ray lens cleaner from somewhere, and if that doesn't work, I'm calling Sony.

Target of course.. Just pack it up, walk in the store, and walk out with a brand new one. Go home and play.. If you call Sony you will have a small wait while they ship your new one out..

Call up sony, say this is happening, you will be shocked with the ammount of help you get within a matter of seconds.
They will take your 60 gb, get you a new one within days.
It happened to my uncle, he got a new ps3 within 2 days.
Make sure to backup all your data via external hardrive through usb slot or a usb.

The problem with that is that it's not a replacement plan, its a service plan, meaning they will probably either try to fix it themselves or send it somewhere (possibly Sony) to get fixed.
And if it was a replacement i wouldn't want to come in with a 60GB and walk out with a 40GB.
I just don't know because odds are Sony would send me a refurbished 60GB.

Guess I need to go pick up a USB Flash Drive to put some save data on then.
What kind of service is it? Do they actually have somebody come to your house and pick it up, or do they send out a box?
It might be different in the US than the UK.

Thanks, that's probably what it's gonna be like for me. I heard that in the UK, they actually come to your door to pick up your PS3 and bring it or a new one back to you a few days later. Everyone here is America is too lazy to give that kind of Customer Service I guess.

I guess so, i was dissapointed with their lack of customer service i expected a lil more, maybe its because i was upset that it died on me, i have NEVER had a console die on me, i think a part of me died on the inside! lol i hope i get a replacement soon, honestly this better not be a trend because i felt one of the things the ps3 had going for it was its durability!

Yeah I was hoping this would be one that would last me the whole time.
The only console that never died on me was the ps1 and xbox1, i guess because i never played the xbox. i had a ps2 die twice, and this is my fist ps3.

I think my disc drive may just be dusty but i'm not sure.
Does anyone know of any solutions that don't void the warranty?
Do those regular compact disc lens cleaners work?

I also have a broken disc drive but just in case there is dirt. Have the power off while holding the eject button then turn the console on while holding the eject button, eventually you will hear a beep then a whirring noise, its a self cleaning mechanism that takes place then try and play games if not youll have to ask for a replacement mine will take 11 days to come and replace.

(and the OP has a 60GB.)

And it will make the PS3 think its overheating, So its not the best idea in the world. And you can do it on the 60gb anyway. Just hold it upside down for 30 secs. ;)

It is the method on the 20GB, 60GB, and 80GB of holding it upside down that is not the best idea in the world.

yeah id get it replaced if i was u m8 if its still under the years warranty u should be able to just bring it back to the shop u bought it from and if its a 60gig then they usually have a few spares in stock incase sumthing like this happens, thats what i did and its true that sony customer care is useless so i wouldnt bother with them

I know its not that because Games off of the HDD (demos, etc) work perfectly fine.
Anyway, I've already sent it in to sony on June 24th, and I already got an email from them saying they've sent it back. The UPS tracking has it being delivered on July 2nd.

hello i am a noob here based in sweden, heres my ps3 woes.i have 60gb purchased march 2007,march this year it packed up on me ,i mean the whole shebang it stopped reading all discs, controllers went out of sync everything.
anyway it still had the guarantee so i returned it back to the GAME store where i bought it,with a controller and cables ,and i was told 2 wks i should get a replacement.
i should be so lucky, eventually after many phone calls to:gta: Nordic films the company that deals with ps3 repairs/distribuition in scandinavia,i received a reconditioned ps3 in a shoddy looking brown box no controller or power cable and a free game 2 months later.beleive me i was pissed,so i got the store guy to phone them, and they said it would be another 2 weeks to get them to me.
anyway the store guy got me a controller and power cable out the back, and told me alot of people complain about this Nordic films customer service.
Now heres the worst part after having the "replacement" for just under three weeks i was watching a movie the other day then it freezes,so i press the power button. my screen goes funny, then i knew that was it,another 1 bites the dust.
I powered it back on again ,remote control and two controllers would not work,no login screen just a blank screen.I`ve tried everything to get it working again and its just not having it.
:gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta: :gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta::gta: :gta::gta::gta::gta::gta:i was just getting into gta iv aswell.
