Yes, I've posted this in the Technology section too, but it fits into both.

Ok, I've just bought a Sony Bravia, got home connected my PS3 blah blah...
I put the HDMI cable into my PS3 & TV, load up my PS3, & it says something like 'HDMI has been detected, would you like to use it', I click yes, it goes to a black screen... 30 seconds later it comes back on with the same screen, asking me to do the same thing... & the cycle continues...

I tried putting the HDMI cable in after I loaded up the PS3, went through the settings & tried to do it that way... same thing happens...

My TV manual says I have to connect it with my TV , I've tried that, it says that it can't find the HDMI thing...

Will rep for an answer

Also, now that I've got a HDTV, do I need to change any of the settings on the PS3 (for better picture quality)?

What Bravia do you have?
I have a Bravia and I just put it to the input of the HDMI (the manual has that information). That's all I need to do to hook it up, or so that the TV recognizes the signal.

One thing I would try is hooking up the HDMI, but turning the PS3 completely off. Then turning on the PS3 by holding the power button - it should then beep a few times and ask you about the resolution on-screen. Follow the instructions, and see what happens.

The other thing I would try is getting a new HDMI cable just to see if there is any difference.

Have you tested your PS3 on someone else's HDTV? I would also try that if you can.

first try to reset your ps3 by holding the power button on the front until it beeps then if it doesnt automatically switch it for you go to settings display settings and switch it manually if that doesnt work call sony and complain to tnem that their hdtv doesnt work with their ps3

He means the red, white, and yellow cables. They are 3 pronged (respectively), and they turn into one cable, and that part hooks up to the back of your PS3 (or even your PS2).

So basically hook that cable up to your PS3 and TV, and I don't know if you can have the HDMI hooked up at the same time or not, but I'm guessing you can... you go to the setting on your tv for the RCA cables (again, consult your manual on which input to select) then set the PS3 to use the HDMI. You then have to switch over to the HDMI cable input on your TV (again, by consulting your manual), and then click yes to continue with that setting. You kind of have to do it quickly so it doesn't go back to component cables (I think you have like 30 seconds or so).

Then see what happens. To me, it sounds like it might be a PS3 issue, but if your TV has never seen an HDMI cable, I might want to check on putting a component on that TV that uses HDMI to see if it works or not.

Also, make sure you have the CORRECT HDMI input selected on your television if you have several ports for HDMI. Again, the manual will tell you where you physically connected the cable, and what input on the TV to select for it.

So if I use the HDMI cable I'm not supposed to use that RCA wire? This could be where I was going wrong...

They are composite cables, component cables are hd cables

Ok, so let's recap...

You connect the composite cables (red, white, and yellow), and turn on your PS3, and have your TV turned to that input.

You then go on your PS3 and tell it to use HDMI cable.

You then disconnect the composite cables, and hook up the HDMI cable.

Then you change your TV input to the HDMI setting... what do you see?

OK, I need to explain a bit more.

Have your PS3 completely off. have your tv on. Have ONLY the HDMI cable in. Then, hold the power button on the PS3 for 5+seconds until you get the beeping. it SHOULD work then.

@Ambassodor: you shouldn't be plugging and unplugging cable while the PS3 is on, and especially not when its trying to change.

makidian
June 12th, 2008, 04:50 PM
You may just have the wrong input selected on the TV, since you have the composite cables in and your on that setting with your TV but your PS3 is detecting your HDMI cable but your TV isn't on that input. So just cycle through your inputs with the HDMI cable plugged in, since I don't know what your input labels look like I can't tell you which one that is but it should be labeled by the HDMI input(i.e 6 by the input go to input six in your input menu on the TV). It could be your HDMI, some are complete garbage, or it could be the TV, this same thing happened to my brother-in-law and it ended up being the TV.

hmmmm right only have your HDMI cable plugged into your ps3 and HDTV, power on

you should get a messgae saying 'a HDMI source has been found do you want to use it?'

hit yes

does your tv automatically change to HDMI when the ps3 is turned on?

cause my mate was doing what i think your doing he had the hdmi lead plugged in and the RCA cable too (red, yellow and white), now when it said do you want to change to hdmi, he clicked yes, his screen went blank and after a while it switched back to the rca, this is because when you change the picture setting your given 30 secs to agree with the settings you have just made, in other words when you've clicked yes to use hdmi, make sure its on the hdmi channel to accept the settings.

hope this helps

I was under the impression you were changing your TV input to HDMI.

If your remote is similar to this one... http://hardwarezone.co.th/img/data/nnews/2006/6124/Image/ConclusionBig.jpg

I think you change your inputs by pressing "menu", then "ok" to "External Inputs" (or similar, depends on your TV), then you go to Input 1, and press OK. You repeat the process - menu> External Inputs>ok>scroll to next input by using the arrow keys>ok. You repeat the process until you've hit "OK" to all the inputs.

this hasnt turned into a quick question at all lol.

right

plug both HDMI and RCA cables in again, flick to the channel the RCA cables are using go to system settings on PS3, look for screen settings.

choose HDMI output, (think it says are you sure you want to do this?) click yes

then flick the channel on your tv to the HDMI channel, you should see a message saying do you want to accept these settings? click yes

(you get 30 secs to choose before the PS3 goes back to using the rca cables)

There should be a button othe remote that says input, video, or it may change through the menu. My sony remote that says input, but its a universal that I bought to replace another however yours should have something similar if not on the tv itself as a button.

Sounds like the tv wasn't on it's "HDMI" input. Figure out how to change the input to the hdmi on the tv. Then plug in the PS3 via hdmi and turn it on.

Also, this should be in the "ask a question" thread; shouldn't it?

Ah I think I've found the area I need to be looking into.

I've tried changing the Input, all it has is "TV", "AV1, "AV2" etc. up to about AV7... no HDMI, but I'm taking that's because of the following:

When I go onto my TV menu settings, onto HDMI set-up, I click on the device list update, but it doesn't recognise the cable? My TV has 2 HDMI slots, I've tried it in both, & I get nothing.

It's defiinetly not the cable because my PS3 recognises it, could it be my TV (faulty)? I only got it today aswell...

Ok, please make sure of this first...

Have your PS3 hooked up to the HDMI cable, and have it off. Have your TV set to one of the HDMI inputs (1 of 2, right?)...

Turn on your PS3 while holding the button until it beeps. If you don't see anything, change it over to the other HDMI input on your TV.

If that doesn't work, it's either an issue with your PS3 or TV (probably the TV, but PS3 is a possibility being that this is the first time you've used the HDMI).

EDIT:
Another thing you REALLY need to do is read your TV Manual on the HDMI section. Some TV's require you to set that up. I'm guessing your TV is very different than my own, so it is certainly worth a look.

Try counting your inputs until you get to HDMI slots and then go through your AV selectors until you see the HDMI detection screen, after you do what Ambassador said. Your input selections aren't labeled anything but AV so you'll have to go through each one until you hit the HDMI ones, check the input slots on the TV to see if there are numbers next to it or AV labels(i.e AV5 is labeled next to your first HDMI input)

Yeah I caught that a little too late.
Have you read your manual? We aren't going to know how to find those HDMI ports if the information we need is right in front of you.

If you've read your manual, and you did it all (as per our conversations and the manual), then you either have a faulty TV, or a faulty HDMI port on your PS3. I think it is the TV, but there is still that slim possibility. Without testing the TV further with other components, it is difficult to tell which one is the culprit.

The TV is where you need to start. My Bravia has a certain brightness type of setting called "vivid", and it looks really cool on my PS3. Check your colors, brightness, contrast, and such as well.

As for the PS3, the only things I really know of are RGB range, and the cross-color setting. I would start with those as far as the PS3 goes.

EDIT:
To be honest, I can't vouch for your TV's settings as far as what you have and how you can use it. This is where you should definitely check out your manual.

It shouldn't damage the screen but it does increase wear on the backlight and therefore may cause it to not last quite as long.

Its not a manual its facts.......and if you looked at his TV you would realize it doesnt support deep color, x.v. color, etc........so and full RGB spectrum would just F*** it up.

The Vivid setting on the Bravia is just weird. To me it doesn't look right at all, and shadows go pitch black almost instantly. I'd post my settings but each person does have individual taste that comes into play. I'm intending to go to the HDTV section later today and check out setting recommendations. My image does look wonderful, but it could use a tweak here and there.
