You should go with a Western Digital HDD, they're the best.

I don't know what happens on the old drive, if you want to clear it after you've backed up your data then there is an option to do that on the PS3.

Just uninstall a game you don't play much or delete some trailers & demos. I'm sure you can make room.

I need all my games files cause Trophies are coming out and i need my trophies. Is their a site or a video shows how to upgrade the HHD step by step? (upgrading HHD for Dummies lol)

I found the easiest way was just to back up game saves on a 4 gig flash card. then re download all the psn titles and re load any installs or game version updates, as it saves a bit of cash. Also if you run out of space on the faslh memory, can transfer to PC...

Then i bought a cheap external case for old drive and now use that for back ups and music etc on the PS3...

but yep my western digital HHD is great (touch wood - not cloth tho!)...

If I had more time, may get some time over next two days at work , is to do a thread with options of what to do with new internal HHD, as there are a lot of new HHD threads going around at present.

I didn't say delete your saves. Just uninstall the games you don't play. Your game saves won't be touched. Also you can back them up on a flash drive if it make you feel better. If you buy a new Hard drive you will have to do that anyways to keep your game saves.

I know what you mean OP. I only have a 40GB, so I had 37GB to start out with. Here's what my data consists of right now:

Game Data

Burnout Paradise - 25MB
GT5:Prologue - 4749MB
Hot Shots Golf:OOB - 3599MB

Saved Data Utility

Burnout Paradise - 1503KB
Super Stardust HD - 196KB
HSG:OOB - 1006KB
GT5:P - 290KB

Demos

Ratchet and Clank Future:TOD - 1609MB
GRiD - 962MB
Eye Create - 9051KB
Motorstorm - 453MB

PSN Games

Super Stardust HD - 190MB

I'm sitting at 19GB free. After getting a few more games, I'll need to upgrade my hard drive I'm sure.

I hope you know that not all of the old PS3 games are going to surport the new trophies system.

The best thig I ever did to my PS3 was upgrade my HDD from a 60gig to a 320gig.

How do i rebackup the files to the new HDD? and do i have to make new users?

New User = Yes.
New PSN = No.

The best way to put you saves on the new hard drive is with a flash drive.
A 512 flash drive is more then enough if it's just game saves.

1) Save them to the flash drive.
2) Put the new hard drive in.
3)Copy them onto the hard drive with the flash drive.

I've had to empty my 60Gig a couple of times. I've got about 6Gig left at the moment. I've already deleted off a shed load of videos and demos I didn't touch. Looks like its time for a new drive for me too.

Quick and Dirty:

What you need - Any 2.5" SATA HDD (The same type as used in Laptops)

Possible problems - Normal HDDs used in Desktop PCs are 3.5" so make sure it's 2.5".

Install is quick and painless, the video above covers that.

Extra - When you have finished you could buy a case that will convert your old 60GB HDD into an external drive you can hook up by USB. But that's up to you.

I think you'd use a flash drive to back up important saves, game data, etc. For a complete backup of your entire HDD, you'll need something at least as big as your HDD.

I havent really read all of this thread so forgive me if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

I had the same problem when trying to back up my PS3 HDD to an external drive. The external HDD had plenty of space (160gb) and the total size of data on my PS3 was around 50gb - so there was more than enough room. However, when i tried to back up the data my PS3 still told me that i needed around 40gb more space. Subsequently, i called Sony.

To solve the problem i reformatted my external HDD to FAT32 (from NTFS) and the PS3 then recognised that there was enough space on the drive to back up. This might be your problem (unless ive completely missed the point!)

Not region locked.

NTFS - is Microsofts way of formatting drives, FAT32 is a universal way, but on Windows has a limitation of max 32gig in size of the drive, which you then have to create a number of partions ( or rooms) to hold data. Programs Like partion magic allow you to create a Single drive or Partion larger than 32 gig.

Plug External Drive into PC via USB - download Partion magic ! follow instructions.
