What exactly does the backup feature backup? If I do not use the backup feature and install a new hard drive (I don't own a big enough external backup device, only a 4 gig thumb drive), can't I just re-download the items I puchased from the Playstation store, and put my individual saved game files ps1/ps1/ps3 on my thumb drive?

Yep you can re downloaded stuff from PSN, as long as you have not reached your 5 downlaod limit, yep put your game saves on the thumb drive... only other thing u'll loose is any music / video's and the game installs and updates. but they can be just re done.

The main thing is to save your game saves, that's all i did when went to a 250 gig, then downlaoaded the rest again

I am also looking for an alternate solution to backing up my data. I am gonna ask my boss if he has an extra external harddrive I can borrow, because all I have is a 4GB memory stick.

I had the same prob when was upgrading my 60gig drive.. just went for the game save option... then use the old 60gig for backing upp once removed.

Know does not help ur situation, can't thin kof any other ways other than borrowing one, but it would have to be FAT 32 formatted, which is a problem as most external dorves that people use for pc's will be NTFS formatted.. which the PS3 cannot read !.. which would be re formatting an external drive.

sory cant be of any more help on that one.

What do you mean by that? I can use that 60GB to hold the data for me?

Once I removed the old 60gig and replaced with a 250gig drive, i bought cheap external non power case for about £8.. and use that as extra storage device, keep backup / music and pics / vids on it.

I don't plan on copying any of my music or video files. I have a question though, is there an option when doing a Back Up that let's you choose only Game Saves?

Don't think so form memory, but i am old and stupid, i just went though and copied them one by one, only took about five mins, as it pretty quick.

Oh, so I can just copy and save each of them one by one. That sounds like a much better option.

Yep hit Triangle on each game save then gives you option to COPY, If flash drive added, can choose to copy to that. If you got too many saves to fit on flash drive, could always then save on PC etc.

once new drive in, insert flash drive go to game saves, go into flash drive repeat to copy back to PS3 HHD.

Oh really? So if my 4GB stick is almost full I can just put data on my PC to make up space on the memory stick?

Yep, just create a folder in your PC, called PS3 game save or something, so you remember where they are, cos the saves are just reference names with lots of random numbers...

I also have all my PSP game save on PC as well.. just under a little folder called PSP game saves.
