You may have to format or do the following in this article but I can see no reason for this not work. Or alternatively you could even take that hdd out of its casing and stick it in the PS3 (just a thought).

Thanks for your input.. + rep
Edit: Oh and by the way I won't do the whole internal thing.. I got a 60gb from launch and everyone say's it disables the BC of the original system.. leaving me with no BC? lol so that being the case I'll be good with the external hook up. Just want to put all the bs (like music, pics, movies, and unused game saves on another hard drive to keep me with open space)

All you need is to format it to FAT 32 it can be a pain if you are running Windows. I used Linux Ubuntu to do the job but you could get SwissKnife if you don't have Linux. My only complaint is that the PS3 does not let you create folders and the cut option would be very useful too.
EDIT I forgot. You need to create a VIDEO, MUSIC, GAME, PICTURE and PS3 folders!

I highly doubt that you'd lose BC can anyone confirm or disprove this? Or do you have a source for this?

Well a friend of mine had a 60gb and he converted the HD to a 200gb and lost all BC.. he didn't care cuz he had a ps2.. I do to but I'm more of an ''keep everything original'' kind of person and rather have everything on one console you know

No you don't loose BC if you upgrade your HD, the firmware is located on a flash memory not the harddrive so no need to worry :)

That drive will work just fine, it comes pre-formated to FAT32, so it should just plug and play, and changing the internal HDD will NOT disable BC.
However, before you plug it to your PS3 you may want to plug it to your computer and create three folders on the HDD, MUSIC, PICTURE, VIDEO, this will make it easier for you to view media saved on the external HDD on the PS3.
