You should be much less than worried, the 60gb PS3 is the best one. I've got it too. It has backwards compatibility, more USB slots and other card slots (which I've never personally used). Does 40gb PS3 have a chrome finish? I know the 60gb does. Is their other benefits? I havn't really researched what I just stated.

there's a rumor that new games will have issues on the 60gb model... (ala GTA4)

not confirmed...

But I am ready to raise hell if its true...

Oh, your wondering if new games aren't going to work on the dicontinued 60GB PS3? Well, they will. Some people do have problems with GTA IV - but no one knows what causes it (probably the crappy company that made the game). Your 60GB PS3 is fine. And they discontinued the 60GB PS3 so they could replace it with the 80GB PS3 in August of 2007. The 80GB PS3 will be re-released in a new bundle (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10105856&catid=24376) on June 12th, which includes the Standard Edtion of MGS4 and the newly released Dualshock 3 controller.

I think they stop making 60 GB because it cost more and to cut cost they went with 40GB cutting a lot of the feature that they believed unnecessary.

The only thing I'm concerned about is if it goes wrong. Presumably if the blu-ray drive failed they could replace it, but if something integral on the motherboard went it might be more tricky.

One of the card slots is the same size as the mem card slot on a psp. Which is handy as I use mine for backing up save games, PS2 saves etc.

dodger,
if your mobo fails, and they do not have any more in stock, they will probably offer you an equal or better model (80gb). But since thousands of consoles are returned and refurbished, they probably have a pretty nice stock of 60gb parts for ya.

A colleague and myself bought a 60GB on launch day and his bluray drive packed up about 6 months ago.

He called Sony and got a replacement but also enquired what would happen if it broke down again or was beyond repair say in a couple of years time.

The Sony rep advised they still manafacture a small quantity of 60GB to ensure there are enough units to replace any faulty consoles for the lifespan of the console.

So wether you've got a 40GB or 60GB PS3 there's no need to worry.
They will both play all games and would also be replacement available if either of them break down.

I assume Sony stopped producing the 60gb to cut down costs and offer a lower priced console i.e. the 40gb. Beats me why theirs a 80gb though, its like they are doing a Yoyo affect or something.

So, so true. 60gb models were just expensive at the time

My 60gb Ps3 needed a refurbishment so when i rang sony i asked will i get a 60gb in return the guys said "Yes Sony are continuing to make the 60gb but are not releasing it to retailers"

You can only buy the 40GB.

It's missing useless features such as Memory card readers, and PS2 compatibility. PS1 emulation remains for some reason.
