View Full Version : THE Most random thing ever. Anyone else?

I noticed as i was aobut to play GTA IV that my PS3 made a low pitched, but loud humming sound as the disc started spinning. It was quite noticable, especially as the fan makes no sound at all, and i was a little worried, thinking the drive was screwed or something.

However, i tapped the top of the Playstation (it lies horizontally) and the sound stopped for like half a second and then carried on? I did this all over the console, unclusing the opposite end of the disc drive where the HDD hatch is, and the noise stopped and then carried on... I then pushed up of the bit of the console that sticks out (where if you push underneath, the plastic bends as it's not supported) and the noise stopped all the while i had the end "squeezed".

I tried like a billion things, tapping the console even the slightest amount seemed to stop the noise. I turned it so it was sitting vertically and this stopped the noise, but it started as soon as i placed it back horizontally, and when i pick it up the noise stops. I put my micro fibre cloth on the table it was sitting on and placed it on top of that, and the noise stops... that seems the most random thing ever, the only thing i can imagine is making the noise is maybe a loose foot pad from the console or something vibrating on the desk. Don't ask me why i tried all these crazy things, but they all stopped the noise untill i left the console alone, apart from putting it on top of the cloth which stops the noise completely.

All my discs work fine but all create this annoying noise when in the drive, PS3 software works fine, the fan works as usual, but it's annoying the crap out of me. Anyone else experience this? (I really doubt it, but it's worth a try).

No, call Sony.

They've probably helped someone with a problem like this.

Based on your description, it's most likely that the optical drive is ever so slightly out of plumb in your PS3. When the drive spins up, it acts like a gyroscope and rights itself, which is causing the outer edge of the media to hit (or come close) to the edges of the enclosure, which can become audible. It could also just be causing the case to vibrate, which in turn causes the shelf on which it is sitting to audibly resonate to the vibrations. You can test this by placing a coin (or other flat object) under two adjacent corners. If the first pair of corners doesn't stop the noise, move to the next pair. Once you've established which corners correct it (assuming this is the problem), you can make more permanent feet out of rubber self-adhesive dots that can be purchased just about anywhere (Walmart, Home Depot, Staples) -- 3-M makes them. Let us know if that works.

some thing happens to me, i gues si never noticed it but my ps3 does it to unless i lift it up i think its becuase its on top of a sony vcr with thin sheet metal the causes it to vibrate net time i have the chance i will try and take out the vcr to see if it still happens. it can still read discs too.

anyways, i just tried like 4 disks in it and they all work fine now, it only happened twice to me and now its fine...probably will happen again but all i did was egect the disk and put it back in and it worked fine....
