Maybe wmp means winamp and not windows media player. I don't know if windows media player works but tversity and winamp remote work

Sorry, but long post, so I can't summarize it for you:

WMP actually does mean Windows Media Player. Also, your best bet is to use TVersity (http://ps3forums.com/www.tversity.com). It's a free program that transcodes videos on the fly so you don't need to have them in a PS3 compatible format.

I use windows media player 11 as my streaming server to the ps3, it works flawlessly for everything except HD,, im on a wifi network so maybe even HD will work on a wired setup.. I can even copy using the server at high speeds..wmp11 detects my h264 mp4s and i can copy them at around 1.5MB's to the ps3.
From wmp11, enable media share(Under the Library tab) and you should be good to go, if you are using vista make sure that you are on a private network otherwise it wont work..
If all goes well, your ps3 will auto detect the server and a windows icon will show up with your server name next to it in the music photo and video section..
Good luck..

WMP11 is very picky about what it plays when streaming.
I would use Tversity as it supports alot more and will transcode on the fly the things that the PS3 cant handle.
If you are having problems getting past your router. The easy thing to do is just to put your PS3 out side of it (ie in the DMZ). Its quite safe as the Ps3 is secure unlike a PC.
I've done this and it means i never have a problem with making sure certain ports are open.
If you dont know how to do it, let me know your router make and model and i'll tell you
