no extra cooling products are needed for the ps3, they cool themselves just fine out of the box.

I have the 40gig and if I'm not gaming on it, I'm running folding@home on it, its on 24/7 and no problems with heat.

plus it voids your warranty if they see you've attached one. and they know...OH...THEY KNOW!

From what I've read the addon coolers can damage the hardware of the console. The PS3 cools fine by itself provided it isn't in a small, cramped area.

Do not buy a cooling unit for a console. It's a waste of money. Also, if the unit shares the consoles power, it can damage your console and void the warranty.

Just don't keep it in a small confined space man. Keep it where air can get to it. Put your hand around it some time when you have played for an hour or so... If it feels hot then you need to move it to a different spot.

ive got a 20 gig , and it gets hot , but it is manufactured by sony to , run at the temperatures , that it gets , plus , the heat giving off from the components is , instantaneously taken away from the components ,so the heat can do no harm. the heat that we feel , is just being vented out , so , you don't have to worry about your components burning up, and the console dying , unless your stupid and cramp it in a place , were vents are blocked

Semi-off topic, but whats better for cooling? Standing up or lying down? Does it make any difference at all? I've heard people say they got freezups with it lying down vs standing up on end...

If it gets too hot it turns itself off so no worrys, also the extra cooling things void the warranty I think and just make it hotter.

Sony reported when they first released the consle that if you follow all the rules they will replace the concle if it over heats I think that is a 2 - 3 year warenty on that. The rulse are.

A. 5 - 6 inches in the back of open space
B. 4 - 5 inches on the side of open space
C. Not in a close area.

They said this because they know dang well that their system wont over heat. They also said that if you use any external cooling device that your warranty is voided. Don't use them I use to work for play and trade I got more returned systems because of that then anything. Those external fans don't work they blow the heat back in or they suck so hard that they make your internal fans break.

As for laying dow or standing up I haven't heard anything on either or so I guess we will wait to see if someone else has an oppinion.

As everyone said, don't bother with an inter cooler. Not only is it unnecessary but in some extreme circumstances it will actually hurt the PS3 being as it is not designed to have anything obstructing the cooling ports and the inter coolers tend to 'force feed' it air which is not a good thing.

There are for more knowledgeable people here then me on the subject and not that long ago there was an excellent thread on the topic with some great answers, try a Search, perhaps it will yield the thread I'm talking about.

Doesn't really make a difference. There was a couple people that took thermal images of standing up vs down but it wasn't a significant difference.

What makes more of a difference is the air temp of the air being pulled into the unit (i.e. don't keep it in an enclosed space as it will increase the air temp around and you're reheating and reheating this air.)

More chance of breaking if you use some thrid party crap, my PS3 stays quite and cool all the time, my laptop is louder and warmer.

that's right, just give it enough room, and if you have it in a cabinet, leave the door open when you have it on. I've never even heard the fan except once someone closed the cabinet door and you could hear it really loud
