For some strange reason, my PS3 has decided not to be able to connect to the internet net anymore.
I was playing tf2, left for an hour, fired it back up and connection problem, i go to check what it was and the message I get is the PS3 cannot obtain an IP address, after two failed power cycles of my modem/router and all other wireless devices I call tech support.
I'm told to power cycle again, fails again. I then am told to enter my IP address, subnet mask, DNS etc. manually. I do, it can now find an IP address but cannot connect to the internet, it's now a DNS error.
I didn't write down the error code, but I will post it in here when I check back on replies.
I'm at the end of my rope here folks, help me!

Not that this really pertains to you but maybe when I setup my network I set it up with a pool for only 7 devices, as well as encrypting it (based upon my neighbors and traffic didn't feel the need for mac filtering). Well then I added my NAS drive which took longer than I expected to get setup and tried to get internet on PS3 and it would not for the life of it get an IP and then I remembered that I originally set it for 7 devices and made it 8.
Moral of the story is check all of your router's settings thoroughly before becoming out of your mind frustrated. One thing you can try is to save the settings for the router then getting a push pin and hold the reset button in on it for about 10 seconds. Unplug the router from it's power source; then unplug your modem for about 2 minutes; Plug the modem back in and wait until all the lights on the modem are active and hook the router back up. Test the connection on devices other than the PS3 and then the PS3 itself. If it works then try importing your settings and if it breaks obviously you made a change that doesn't work.

was it a dns error? or what did the error say?

I think mine is set for 6, but it is encrypted, and other than my PC my laptop is the only other device here that would be using the IP.
I've already reset the router and modem thrice now.
I really don't understand what the problem is.

It said I had failed to connect due to a DNS error.
So I'd assume that is my problem.

Reboot your router again. It might work now.

Explain how you reset it, and does anything else connect to the net?

I've reset it three times, two yesterday and again this afternoon, after trying to log in again after work about 30 mins ago, I thought I'd seek some help here.

Just my PC and laptop.
Unplug both modem router, turn off all wireless devices, wait 15 mins, turn back on.
As i was told too by sony tech.

Again! How did you reset it? Did you use a push pin in the back, did you just unplug it, explain in details or don't both with a thread.

Nm, my previous post; try it the way I outlined, just because it is off for 15 minutes doesn't mean it is truly reset. A lot of current routers use memory that is not volatile and therefore no matter how long it is off it will not erase the memory. Some routers have a battery kinda like a motherboard cmos battery as well and 15 minutes w/o power would be enough to drain it but all depends.

I'll give that a shot now then.
I'll bump this if/when it works/doesn't.
Thanks for the effort.

I tried your way, after the reset my router wouldnt allow me to import my old settings, and I know have multiple networks coming out of it.
On top of that, my laptop cannot connect to any of them, all of which are unsecured.
So, now my PC is open to all kinds of garbage and I have literally no idea how to fix this.
Honestly, I'm just about fed up with this ****.

Ok, basically what you have done by pressing the button in at the back with a pin/pen is reset your router to its default settings. Your WEP will be reset and your internet connection details ( username/pass ) will have been deleted. You`ll need to go into your router settings now and redo everything from scratch ( go into your router settings via 192.168.x.x ( you`ll find this ip in your router manual )
The guy that told you to do this was so wrong and just a pity I only saw this thread now, coulda saved you all the hassle. What Sony told you to do was correct. Its no biggy tho just do what I said above.
Oh and this should really be in online/networking section.

If you entered manual settings in your PS3 are you sure you've put the correct DNS in? Try letting it do it automaticaly again?

HR1888 is correct, goto the IP address for the router settings and set everything back up again. use admin for user name and "password" for the pass wrod and it usually gets you into your settings.
What type of router are you using?
You can always google your router ip as well, like Netgear is routerlogin.net for the settings and what not.
