Can anyone explain what the Superwhite option is/does in the display settings for the PS3. Is this only for HDtvs? or certain tvs for that matter? I kind of want optimal settings for my 32" HD and i was just wondering what i should throw that on...and also if i should use the limited or full option for RGB or whatever its called.

Unless your TV's manual says otherwise, use limited RGB and do not use superwhite. Both of these are very, very, rarely supported by TVs.

Superwhite refers to an option that certain HDTV's have, I have it on my TV downstairs but the TV in my bedroom does not.

If its so rare then why does the ps3 offer these options? That was not trying to be rude the least bit but im just sayin...thats kinda weird.. and what type of tvs use the superwhite..like huge sony 1080p?

Super White is the the white levels outside of the normal RGB scheme. The RGB scheme goes from 16 to 235 instead of 0 to 255 in terms of lumance. When you exceed these thresholds you saturate to the level (black or white.)
Newer monitors can actually go beyond the RGB range and go into the super white region.
As mentioned, some support it, some don't. The ones that don't you'll end up just clipping more of the white and you get a washed out effect if you try to use the option.

They have nothing to do with size, it's just a feature that some sets support and others don't -- most TVs don't.
Long story short, NTSC broadcasts are range limited, and most TVs are designed and calibrated to work within that range. Even modern HDTV sets are often calibrated for this because many sources are calibrated to work with sets that are... You get the idea. It's historical compatibility, and may be with us for some time.
It's simple. If it were the default that sets worked with this, the features would be on by default. They're off, not because Sony are some sort of morons, but because they SHOULD be off for the majority of users.

LOL, apparently you don't watch NASCAR who's had people of all ethnicities as race marshals and I have plenty of friends of various ethnicities who love to watch NASCAR.
This weekend Yao Ming and Stephan Lopez where honorary pit crew members at the Coca-Cola 600 and Kristi Yamaguchi waved the green flag to start the race. Check out the list of Grand Marshals and Entertainers for NASCAR races recently.

You know when I first saw that on my PS3 I thought...Superhero of the KKK? But no...Superwhite is not a racists superhero. From what I was told the superwhite option is there for HDTV's that have the option. Some TV's in order to save on the life of the TV dim the shade of white a little bit...so instead of being a solid white it may look a little grey. Superwhite brightens the white color to make it more vibrant but may shorten the life of you're TV or the bulb in it. This option os mostly used in DLP TV's.
And no I am not racist in the slightest. I do however find it a little on the creepy side that this post was my 666th post...

Superwhite only applies if your HDMI output is set to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr.
If output its set to RGB then what makes a difference is the HDMI Black Level.

You referred to some of your friends of various ethnicities and a few celebrity bit pieces. Nothing that would convince that NASCAR commemorative plates are going to be flying off shelves in New York faster than they would in Kentucky...

So now you switch to regions. Kind of ironic that you say this when you're much more likely to find a Hockey fan in New York than in Kentucky. Just a little secrete between you and I but Kentucky doesn't have a NASCAR race there, but IRL does ;-) or are you just implying racing as a whole is for white people?
That's just an ignorant attitude to take and I am offended.

Well I'm glad you think that. Juan Pablo Montoya would probably have to disagree with you.
It's kind of funny that in 6 years in F1, he came in 6, 3, 3, 5, 4, 8th in the overall F1 points standings from 2001-2006. But his winnings from any of those season's was less than his $4.7M in winnings last year as the 20th place driver in NASCAR. This doesn't even go into the sponsorship.
In NASCAR you got to go to 40th position to find someone who got less than $2M in winnings. And trust me the drivers are also paid well by the teams and sponsors.

TAZ427 Be as offended as you want, thats what you get for killing and dissecting a joke.
It don't recall specifying a region to begin with.
I'm sure there are people of all ethnic backgrounds that can stomach NASCAR. That does not at all change the fact that it's a sport who's public perception is that of a past time that appeals especially to White Americans. That's the basis of the joke, and surely you can't deny that.
When there are legitimate songs declaring the unconditional love of NASCAR (http://www.tsrocks.com/c/cledus_t_judd_texts/i_love_nascar_feat_toby_keith.html) in the hip-hop, R&B, punk rock, Latin music, J-Pop, or pretty much any genre other than country, I'll rescind my statement.

Ok RGB uses a combination of red, blue and yellow to create all the colours you see on your screen.
Now, and this is open to dispute, most televisions are unable to display 24bit plus RGB. They are limited to Limited RGB, which on your PC is 16bit. Its been said this has been done for legacy support purposes, i.e so your TV can continue to receive the limited signals.
Computer monitors however are not constrained by Television standards, and thus why for many a decade we have had the luxury of 32bit RGB
Now onto the subject at hand. When a camera records a picture, still or video, it obviously defines a value for all the colours, including white and black, captured in the picture.
Now the tv monitor/output device, based on the recorded media (and other information contained in the RGB signal) sometimes use the wrong white value when the recorded image is rendered. This causes artifacts (brightness shift etc), and obviously you'll lose clarity and definition.
So superwhite is a higher white value that is incorporated in the high quality RGB signals, 30, 32, and 48bit. This is why many people say Superwhite is only useful for Blu-ray type media as high-definition broadcasts are the only media's that have the head room to contain this additional information.
This higher value white signal is used in lieu of the old white value to render white (and I believe black) information thus alleviating things like brightness shift, luminosity pop.....
Anyway, go to your PC and change it to 16bit colour, and compare it to 32bit colour. Big difference eh. (right click desktop > properties > settings - in there is the colour quality).
Compare the whites in a picture on your computer to the whites shown in the 16bit. This is the difference, if your television can hack it, that you'll see when using superwhite.
There is also a colour chart you can download which will show 32 squares (or something like that). If your TV can allow you see all the squares then for whatever reason, your telly supports full RGB and possibly better.
Also superwhite is not limited to HDMI. Prior to HDMI 1.3 superwhite simply wasn't supported. See HDMI 1.3 supported monitors can now receive 30-bit, 32-bit, and 48-bit RGB signals. Superwhite is contained in these extra channels, amongst other things i.e. transparency.
So for everyone who wants to know; "can my TV support superwhite".
Well get your manual out and have a read, look for anything about RGB (usually in back of your manual), or if your supremely lazy then ring up the manufacturer and ask em.
otherwise find a colour chart, stick it on your PS3. If you can see all the different squares then bam your telly is good as gold
edit:
1. There is no point turning superwhite on if your not using "full RGB".
2. Apparently there is a bug when playing old PS2 games that the PS3 will automatically swap you back to limited RGB (and forgot to switch back to full RGB).
