I just got my PS3 40gb about two days ago and on the 2nd day it started doing something really weird. While playing a game the audio and video would randomly black out for about less than a second, but it would repeat this for about 10 seconds and then go away.

It first happened when I was playing GTA4, so I assumed it might be a problem with the disk. But the same thing has happened in all the demos thats I've played. At this point I dont know what the deal is, I really hope I dont have to get a new one. Can someone help me with this?

Details please?

How is the Audio/Video connected - Direct to TV or through a receiver?

Are you using HDMI, Component, Composite, S-video for Video.

Is audio HDMI, Optical, RCA?

Connectors seated good?

Have you tried moving inputs to another set of inputs on the TV/Receiver?

Thanks for the speedy reply. Its connected directly to the TV via HDMI the audio is also HDMI. The connectors seem to be seated correctly, I think i will try using HDMI input 2 on my TV and seeing if that makes a difference.

You have HDCP handshaking issues over HDMI. What model TV? I betcha it'll go away if you switch to component. Otherwise, you're in the exiciting land of debugging HDMI, and it's a huge pain.

I have an HP Mediasmart TV. Do you have any info on the "HDCP handshaking" issue?

I agree with Seebs. Also, if you have another HDMI source like a DVR w/ HDMI then I'd give it a try and see if you have the same issue, and possibly swap cables.

I've been researching, and it seems this problem is most prevalent in Westinghouse TV's. Its weird that now my HP TV is having the same problem. Im thinking that I might switch to component, but is it still possible to get full 1080p with component(noobish question)?

I have the same issue but the weird thing is it only happens with one game?! Singstar cuts out during the opening credits and during 2 of the 30 or so songs...strange.

No, it won't feed 1080p over component video. But you should also check what the native resolution of your set is. Just because it could take a 1080p signal, doesn't mean it's the best thing to provide it. Many flat panels have 720p as their native resolution (768p technically, but they have) and look better when providing a 720p feed than a 1080p feed (and always better than providing a 1080i feed.)
