Maybe, depending on what size it is.

Well, according to newegg, the largest size in laptop HDD is 320gigs.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380+1309733643&name=320GB

and look! you can choose which brand you want! :D

Any way, you can put up to... well as high as HDD market can offer, as long as it supports SATA.

I think the largest external HDD right now is 6 terabites, idk what would one would use with that much space for his ps3, but its there.

The PS3 uses a 2.5" HDD. Make sure you are fully aware of the size. DO NOT GET A 3.5" HDD, IT WILL NOT FIT. I dont think you can get a 2.5" HDD bigger the 350GB yet, I could be wrong however I have not seen one that is, yet.

As long as it's a 2.5" HDD, then you can go for any size you want.

I'm still in the process of looking for an upgrade for my PS3 (40GB goes really fast...) and I'm looking for around 200-300GB, which should be more than enough. Just look around on Amazon, eBay, Newegg, etc. until you find one which is the right size for you. Just remember, it MUST be a 2.5" SATA HDD because, as the above poster said, any bigger and you would've wasted your money as it simply wouldn't fit.

An example of a good purchase is this one here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136197). I don't know where you live so you might have to import, but it's a damn good price considering the size and make of it - Western Digital are one of the top-quality manufacturers out there. I'm considering buying that one right now. With the current exchange rate working out as two dollars to the pound, I'd be getting it for a bargain price of £65.

There's a video somewhere of a guy using an external hard drive and a power supply to make it his main hard-drive, but otherwise it's video, music, pictures.

Although you could copy game saves on and off it.

If you're prepared to wait a little, Samsung is bringing out a 500gb disk that will fit in the PS3. You can check it out here (http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-spinpoint-m6-500gb-25-inch-notebook-hdd-big-things-can-come-in-small-packages-0410590.php).

If you really, really care to all you have to do is get a connector like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812206003

and get a cable like this for the power adapter.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002

Take one of the connectors off of the PCI bracket and take off the top half of the plastic shielding. Connect the regular end into the 3.5" hard drive, and the other to the internal sata connector in the PS3. Then put the sata power adapter on the vantec power supply and then connect it to the hard drive.

From there you can take a dremmel and create a notch for the sata cable to fit through or just use the 3.5" temporarily.

Then you'll have a 3.5" drive for your PS3.
Overall not so easy but heh it works and it is possible for those absolutely needing more than a 320gb internal 2.5" drive. As well you will be able to take advantage of a 7200 rpm hard drive without the added heat within your PS3.

Not unless you complete a mod like I mentioned before; for the PS3 you need a 2.5" internal sata notebook hard drive. The biggest consumer available 2.5" drive is 320gb.

Even if you could hook this up to a ps3 why in the world would you want/need it? Isn't 60 or 80 or hell.. even 40gb enough for all of your stuff? I mean obviously people have a computer to keep types of media on like music. I dont know why you would keep all your music on your ps3..which is the only reason, for me, that one would need a huge HD like that.

A lot of people keep Demos, Games and Videos from the PlayStation Store.

And they're often gigs each. So 40 really isn't enough.

I'd say 120GB is a fair amount for the general user.

Fujitsu, Hitachi and Samsung are all making 500GB 2.5 drives that are supposed to be out very soon, but no hard dates yet. Can't wait so the 250GB and 320GB drive prices drop.

I see Scan.co.uk has the 500GB up for pre-order. 500 GB Hitachi HTS545050KTA300 Travelstar 5K500, 2.5", SATA 300, 5400 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms £152.15 Inc VAT (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=802975)

I decided to go for the 320GB Samsung (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=800122) £75.78 Inc VAT. I don't fancy paying over £150 for 500GB. Granted it's just out on the market, but even still.

I'm getting a 320GB HDD from NewEgg for $130 for my laptop this month. Just about the best deal going, and it isn't all that expensive. If the 500GB HDD is coming out soon, I may get that if it is close to the price of the 320GB drive.

The positive in waiting is because it should knock the price of the 320gb hardrives down, 320gb is more than enough for a ps3 at the moment, i have a 60gb and running low on space, but the good thing is that i can always delete the 30gb of movie i have in theyre

not really sure but i remember seeing an article that samsung was releasing one shortly, but it didnt specify the date.

Edit= oh crap the article is on this thread here it goes

Samsung is shipping the world’s first 2.5” 500GB notebook (http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-spinpoint-m6-500gb-25-inch-notebook-hdd-big-things-can-come-in-small-packages-0410590.php#) HDD starting today. Sure there have been other notebook hard drives released recently with a similar capacity, but those were 3.5” drives, this is yet another amazing feat accomplished by Samsung, the giant of the CE and Mobile industries.
http://www.slashgear.com/gallery/data_files/2/7/8/hdd_25_blue1.jpg

It fits the industry standard 9.5mm space devoted to notebook HDDs, and it has a 500GB capacity. Inside are 3, 167GB platters spinning at 5400 RPMs. It has a 3.0Gbps SATA interface and an 8MB buffer.
It, of course, utilizes Samsung’s amazing perpendicular recording technology (http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-spinpoint-m6-500gb-25-inch-notebook-hdd-big-things-can-come-in-small-packages-0410590.php#), and as an added bonus, it meets Microsofts specifications for a fast-boot device. It is, as I said, shipping now for a low, low price of $299; eat your heart out digital media enthusiasts.

But no release date, man this thing or the 320gb will really put that playTv from sony (whenever it comes out) to use

Hi, I have a 320GB drive im mine and it's excellent. I can see how waiting for the 500gb could be wise, but it depends on how/what you use it for. I use my PS3 as an entertainment hub, so I have about 80GB of music on it, a few movies, lots of game data, themes, wallpapers, PSN downloads, 1080p movie previews etc... so it does fill it up. Plus when PlayTV is released and you record HDTV content to the hard drive, that will chew up a lot of space.

So again it really depends what you'll use it for, it you want to maximise its use, I'd say 320gb as a minimum!

PlayTV for the Win, now i'll never miss a ufc fight, or news again would be awsome, right now my 60gb has like 12 movies, and theyre look pretty good, Carlitos Way, Scarface, Rambo etc, its awsome just a x button press away

After a year my 60gb was almost full, and it was mostly downloaded games and demos. I switched over to the 320gb WD hdd and I don't have to worry about deleting anything anymore. Also, I know some friends that got the same hdd because they use their PS3 as a media center with lots of music/photos/video loaded onto it. It really comes down to what the individual does with their PS3 as to how much capacity they they need.

There's only one thing I don't understand with the Backup utility is why it needs to format the drive for a second time. As I was a bit panicky at first thinking it was going to wipe my external. *me hopes not*

Just thought I'd say, it was actually a Fujitsu that came out of my 40GB model. I always thought they were so quiet. Mind you I can't hear the Samsung much if at all like the Fujitsu.

http://img78.imageshack.us/img78/5204/dscf1671hg6.jpg

Currently restoring the backup, 27 minutes as of now. I think you could say a proper 250GB is more than enough.

that was also the main reason I switched mine to a 120GB. so far I 've only kept demos and games that I like to play every so often. I end up deleting the rest. I know for a fact that later on I will end up getting more games and I'll be happy that I did the swap rather than having to worry about backing up and then restoring to a whole new drive and what not.

Hehe, when is anything in marketing or advertising really true. Most things in life are falsified figures. Looks good on paper though. Doesn't matter what it is in life. ¬_¬

To all the non-believers out there, 500gb laptop drives exist. I've got 3 of them. 2 in this machine, and one in the machine down stairs. I haven't checked the physical size of the ones in this, but i know the one downstairs is 12.5mm, vs the standard 9mm. Tomorrow after moving some data around i plan to see if i can fit it in the ps3. Yeah this is a common misconception and is true for all HD regardless of make.

Basically they don't mean Gigabyte, they mean 1 Billion bytes.

Therefore when you buy one you'll find it actually says something like:

320'000'000'000 bytes. (Although it's usually more random like 319'634'645'261)

320'000'000'000 Bytes : 320 Billion / 1024 = 312'500'000
312'500'000 KB : 312'500'000 / 1024 = 305175.78
305175.78 MB : 305175.78 / 1024 = 298.02
= 298.02 GB

Leaving you with 298GB.

Problem is 1KB = 1024 bytes, not 1000.
And 1MB = 1024KB, 1GB = 1024 MB etc.

So as we get larger and larger drives we loe more and more in rounding.

It use to be so small a difference that nobody complain much about it but now it entering the realm of false advertisement hell my "750GB" advertised external Hard Drive is closer to 700Gb in real capacity. Their already more than a few class action lawsuit because of this mess. I can't believe they never thought about adjusting their advertisement or expand the capacity of their product to match it.
