Ok, yesterday I was trying to play GTAIV, but when I tried to start the game I got an error message, I didn't think it was a big deal so I ejected the disk and put it back in. There was no disk icon on my XMB, just the little loading sphere at the top-right of the screen, I ejected the disk and reset the console. Nothing. I began freaking out and trying other games/movies/CD's but nothing works, the disks don't even spin.

I have tried:
-Looking at the manual
-Phoning support - just got recorded crap
-Restoring system
-Unplugging system and leaving it overnight
NOTHING WORKED.

Is my system broken?! I have had it for less than a year and MGS4 is out very soon >< Should I send it in for repairs?

(It's the 40GB, btw.)

Yes, it is broken, your BD Drive is busted if nothing else works on CD

I suggest calling Sony, and yes you get the recordings, just answer what they say and in no time you will get an operator. Talk to the operator and there nice, so youl get a new PS3 within 2-3weeks, in time for MGS4!

I concerned, because the exact same thing has happened to 2 of my friends, they put in GTA4 and bam! after that nothing works! Good thing i didnt get the game, once it went Multi-plat i didnt bother.

Sorry to hear, though, yes send it in for repair. Hope its ok!

I had this same issue, however not with GTA IV...

I had my Playstation replaced that same day!

I dont know about you however in Malta we have a 1 year warrenty... so its just a matter of getting it replaced...

I believe that if something gets screwed in less then 1 year... i want it replaced and not fixed!

PS. Did you try doing a complete format of the drive??? Some previous post say that it fixes the issue... didn't work for me though...

Thats the well known issue that the 40gb PS3 has. Bad batch of BD Roms.

Probably not :) The PS3 has a very low failure rate you don't need to worry!

Unfortunately no, its not just the 40Gb's, both mt friends owned a 80Gb and the same thing happened to them, something that Rockstar has to look into, They cause the failure. If you are out of warranty and call RS they will call sony and get it replaced for you, so they understand the situation.

Should I sell my GTAIV or wait until R* does something?

Well, thats up to you, MGS4 will be out once you get you PS3, that should keep everyone busy till HOME, and then Resistance2 and Motorstorm2. I would say if you enjoyed it, then keep it. Rockstar may release another patch to fix the problem. Though its a good game for a collection, though it was over hyped and now not much talked about lol...

But one thing I noticed is that this issue with the 40gb has been going on way before GTAIV has been released. Not a very big % of people. But it was noticeable because there was never an issue like this until the 40gb was released.

I agree with you, 40Gb units are fishy to me for some reason, Not that i dont like them, after all its a SONY product, but they have a higher failure rate the the 60gb, 80gb and 20gb! But it could just be coincidence, since so many people have bought them.

It's not a R* issue it's a Sony issue which means R* cannot do a thing about it. The problem is a faulty machine so you need to call the Sony customer service line and answer some questions and you can get a replacement.

To everyone saying the 40GB is the worst at this... it's actually the 60GB, with the 40/80 being the best at working with it. I know nobody with a 40GB freezing issue but I know many with 60GB freezing issues. I'm not sure if it's because the newer PS3's have a smaller chip or not, but whatever they changed in manufacturing they made the defective components lessen.

I bet it would really piss you off if they went multi-platform, huh? (God forbid)

Hell yeh, though GT will never go multi-plat, its owned by sony and produced by PolyPhony, and its a great patternership, besides the 360 cannot produce those graphics, espeially at Full1080 and 60fps using the Cell procecer. PolyPhony probably wouldnt want to code for the 360, theve been coding for SONY for almost 10years!
