This is a fairly newbish question coming from a very newbish guy
I remember reading a lot about how powerful the PS3s Cell processor is. And I was just looking at PS3s on eBay and on the product description under technical specs, the one i'm interested in has "IBM PowerPC "Gekko" listed as its processor type.
Isn't this supposed to be Cell? I got suspicious after that and googled it, and apparently the Gekko is the processor used in the Gamecube! Does this mean the listing on eBay is a scammer? Or is there something I'm not aware of?
Just checked, and it seems all of the PS3s on eBay have this listed as their processor which puts my mind at ease a little. But I would like some confirmation from you guys please :D

the Cell has a ppc, and 8 spe. in the ps3, one of these is deactivated.

So does this mean the items listed on eBay are less likely to be fraudulant? Why does the Ps3 have a deactivated processor thingy?

The PS3 uses the CELL processor from IBM :) Not the Geeko.
The dude's on ebay must have gotten it wrong

No the PS3 is kind of designed as a PPC (power pc) the CELL it self has 8 SPUs one deactivated for yeild purpose.

That was useful, most of us know that.
The ps3's processor is called the Cell broadband engine.

It's obviously a scam, don't trust it if it has specs that are wrong. For your luck you'd get a PS3 with a gekko instead of a cell processor.
And one SPE is disabled for redundancy. Meaning if one SPE dies, they don't have to replace the entire processor.

No it's probably not a scam just that most people don't know the specs of the PS3 (only nerds do) ;)
This is the specs that Sony provide

The guy on ebay is just wrong. The reason one of the SPEs is deactivated is so that chips with a single flaw in an SPE can be used anyway, making it possible to use MANY more of the chips that come out of the fab, and reducing costs.

The user is either a scammer or an idiot. Post the link to the eBay auction and that will make it easier for us to determine this.
Also, if you have any questions like this, then please post them in the "Ask A Question" Sticky next time.

Lol, its not, but I read about that! It seems a lot of eBay machines have this listed as the processor so I'm guessing it's just general ignorance.
And I'm sorry for posting this in the wrong section :(

Apparently eBay has predetermined technical specs set up, and all sellers do is select a PS3(40gb) and it fills it in for them, will explain why all 40gbs are listed as Gekko, while all 60gb are listed as Cell. Looks like an eBay error :)
Looking forward to getting mine now! :D eeeeeeeeee

Misinformation being spread here. Let me rectify:
1. The Cell (in the PS3) is as follows:
1xPPE General Purpose Core
8x SPEs
1 of the 8 is deactivated for yield reasons.
So the PS3 has 7SPE's + 1PPE.
The Wii's CPU is a single IBM PowerPC core.

So's Xenon and Gekko, and whatever they named the modified one they put in the Wii. (It appears to not be exactly the same as Gekko.)

All 3 CPU's were designed from the IBM PowerPC, as Seebs said.

The CPU in the Wii is named 'Broadway', GPU is 'Hollywood' incase anyone were wondering.

Seebs was referring to the GCN processor, named "Gekko". Broadway is the next evolutionary step of the Gekko.
The samething regarding flipper and Hollywood.
