Help!

I had to use system recovery on my laptop and since then my PS3 will not recognise my laptop as a media server and therefore I cannot stream stuf off it! Also I formatted an external hard drive to FAT32 and created the folders 'MUSIC' etc but the PS3 will not even read the drive!

Whats the craic?!

Thanks,

Liam

If your laptop worked before, but then stopped working after you restored it, how are you to expect us to answer your query? We have no idea if you set it back up the same, or set up the external drive correctly. It's highly unlikely that your PS3 suddenly decided to not read drives properly.

Dunno about your laptop problem, but maybe you're having the same trouble as me with your external drive. Instead of just selecting your USb Drive from the XMB(under Music or Video etc), hit Triangle and select "Display All". Your media should show up

Enable it on the media player because otherwise anybody could stream off your laptop.

Thanks stoneyps3 (http://www.ps3forums.com/member.php?u=58832), That was what I forgot to do, enabled media sharing via media player and all is fine now - thanks for the heads up.

rcullenps3 (http://www.ps3forums.com/member.php?u=74165) - thanks for the advice with regards to my external hard drive issue, I will give this a go and report back to you.

Thank you both once again.

I can't see the external hard drive at all on my XMB bar! In fact the external hard drive simply clicks and turns on and off!! It workes fine with the lappy!!

What size hard drive? Any partitions in it? How did you format it, what did you use to format it?

The media your streaming needs to be recognizable by the ps3. It does handle most media formats. Also to for it to be recognized by the ps3 if you hardwire (usb) it you will need to arrange the media into folders such as Music, Videos, Games etc.

Might need to double check a few things like the wifi-toggle on your laptop and check your settings withing the ps3 XMB, as there is an option to turn media-sharing on/off.

Best of luck

Thanks for your reply.

I used the diskmgmt.msc command in WIndows XP. The I downloaded fat32format.zip from http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip (http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/download/fat32format.zip)

I formatted the whole drive with no partitions.

tenmohican (http://www.ps3forums.com/member.php?u=42055): I got the wireless connection via laptop working thanks!

Thanks,

Liam

I did something similar. But used swissknife (http://www.compuapps.com/Download/swissknife/swissknife.htm). Mine works no problem.

I think I did read somewhere there was a problem with some external disks not working with PS3? Not sure though, that might have been just 'cos they were NTFS. Mine's a Western Digital 120GB.

You`ll probly need to enable UPnP on the laptop as it has most likely defaulted to off.

START/RUN then type services.msc

Scroll down to Universal Plug and Play Device Host and start the service and set it too automatic.

The drive powers down when you plug it into the PS3?

When I plug it in (USB) the light stays on, then it starts to go on and off (light included). It's as if there is a power issue - imagine flicking a power point on and off and that is what it is like.

It's doin' me in!!

Because you used diskmanagement.msc It may not have correctly set the MBR and align the disk edges correctly you will need to use a better partition software and format it to fat32.

As for free software id probably recommend Killdisk myself. its a very basic DOS-like program but it is effective at fixing harddrive problems such s you described.

Just curious if you happened to ever use that HDD for vista.. as vista has some real pain in the *** non-compatible HDD issues.

Thanks for your help. The HDD wasn't used with Vista. I cleaned the hdd with Killdisk and then used SwissKnife V3 to format to FAT32 again!

I plug it into the PS3 and get the same result, the unit simply going on and off!!

It's doin me fruit in!

Right. That's it. I have had enough! I will no longer be trying to get this HDD to work with my PS3. I have tried numerous programmes, tried to format 20gb only, created folder names - even tried PHOTO and PICTURE/PICTURES to no avail!

I only have a 40gb model, full of music and what with the game installs, there is only 8gb left and I have just bought GTA4 - I haven't even opened the packaging yet!

Guess I will have to sub out for a new HDD to go inside, shame this one don't work as it's gathering dust!

I would like to thank everyone for their help

You could use Tversity.

http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=75081&highlight=tversity

It's a little programme called a media server that runs on your PC. Your PS3 detects it and accesses the media (you just drag shortcuts in) you've got stored in the Tversity directory on your PC.

You could put that external harddrive on your PC and share it to your PS3 at the same time you'd be able to use it on your PC too. The downside is you need your PC running for you to be able to share it with your PS3.

Another tip: In future be more descriptive with your thread title.
