Alright. Im actually pretty shocked, I turned on my PS3 system today as i usually do every day, decided to play the GRID demo for a while, I paused the game to pay attention to my Computer monitor and all of a sudden i hear beeps and my TV screen goes dark....

Now at this point im like "Wtf", Cus it hasent been on for that long, Just under ten minutes. I noticed the Red light blinking, I head over to see whats what..., I pressed the power button and the console went into its normal STANDBY Mode, No red light blinking no nothing, Pressed the power button again and it worked for 1 second then gave me three beeps and the light turned to yellow for a SPLIT SECOND and then went back to its Red blinking state...

Now im in real trouble cus the warranty is over, Is this an overheating problem?. Can it be fixed....

Did you already try pushing the power button for like 5 seconds until you hear a beep?

Well I think you have to pay $150 to get it fixed now...If you dont have any warranty.

Sorry, might be other solutions though.

I did. It doesnt do anything.

I cant believe this happened, ive been playing the PS3 really hard for the past year thinking that its invincible, and all of a sudden after 10 minutes BOOM, it goes..

Im still not sure if this is an overheating problem, doesnt the console go out COMPLETELY if it overheats?.

Try turning it off overnight, without the plug in.

Mine did that once, I fixed it by doing that ^.

you could try vacuuming it out mang. i vacuumed mine yesterday and now the fan is so quiet and its a lot faster. i didnt think it would make that much of a difference but it did. hope this helps and sorry to hear your warranty is up.

Hmmmm. Not sure what has happened here. Try every possible resetting method there is and hopefully something will fix it. Otherwise ring up Sony and don't tell them that your warranty has run out until they ask and see what happens...

Thing is, i dont exactly know when i bought it last year....

I called the store i bought it from and they told me to send it to them and see what they can do.

Honestly, Im still shocked. I had this mentality that the console was Invincible, I honestly was not expecting this....

That could be just as bad for your systems...flipping the switches on and off so much could do harm as well. These systems were DESIGNED to be left in standby mode, so there's no reason not to leave them that way.

If you happen to get a bad system, it's bad....turning the switch on and off will make no difference at all, eventually the system will keel over.

The other day my wife made the mistake of closing the door of the cabinet where my PS3 resides while it was on. After awhile we were both like "hey, what's that noise", as there was the sound like a vacuum cleaner struggling with a particularly dirty rug coming from inside the cabinet. It was the PS3, man it really did sound like the overhead vent above the stove switched on high, I guess the fan was at 11 trying to cool the unit.

I was cursing and swearing, but the unit seems none the worse for wear, it never shut off or anything, and once the ventilation improved the fan settled down. Still seems to be running alright, but I'm afraid I've shaved a few months off its lifespan by cooking it like that.

mine did the same exact thing .. i am so pissed. 2nd ps3 in 1.5 years.. not the same issue but still. And they wont honor any warranty at all. I think my fan never turns on.

In addition they wont let me open the ps3 as i am convinced that the fan never worked and may not be plugged in at all. If i open it to check they disown it ... FU sony.. i love your product but you are dicking your customers... including the ones that supported you from launch... not cool

Do you have the 60gig?
The reason I ask is because I have wanted to vacuume my 60gig but I am afraid to. lol.
Which part do I vacuume?

Sounds like you might need to get it fixed:( I would call sony up before you opt to send it in, they might have a solution. Goodluck

As far as vacuuming I don't see how it could hurt the ps3 (just vacuume the fans) It will just be air rushing out, and that certainly happens when the fans are on:)

Yes, but i've heard that vacuuming the wrong part just buries dust in further!
Is there a particular side to do???
EDIT: I'm too impatient, just hoovered every vent... Should be fine though.

You dont need to open a ps3 to see if the fan is running. Just put your hand on the right hand side (when horizontal), if you feel the warmth coming out then the fan is running.

Failing that.... just cover up the right hand side exhaust vents and listen for the fan speed ramping up when the system detects an overtemp of the CPU/GPU. <---- If you do this DONT point fingers at me if you break your PS3. It would prove that the fan is working though which I am sure it is :O)

As vacuuming anything requires sucking then placing the hoover/dyson (or whatere you own) on the exhaust side of the PS3 would be best.

Same goes for compressed air dusters..... as they involve blowing then placing the can on the intake side of the PS3 would be best. However, compressed air should be used with care as excessive amounts can cause super cooling to happen. Any dust etc can become wet/moist and actually stick instead of being blown through the system.

so i just use a normal vacume that you use on the carpet and clean it with the sucker cause on the manual it says to use a low powered vacume

mine did the exact same thing on thuradsy last week to only difference was that mine was on for like 5 hours when it did it.
i live in the uk and mine was a 60 gig launch console. i called sony the next day and even though the console was 2 months out of warrenty they had no problem in changing over via a courier service, a man turns up with another console and they exchange it at your house.
i didnt even call with the intention of asking for a replacement i just called to explain the problem to see what could be done, the customer service guy was super and said they would give me a refurb 60 gig console as a guesture of good will. ill be getting my replacement this friday "23rd"

i hope sony are good and help you out with you console.

Just because you cannot hear the fan does not mean it isnt working.

I guess you cannot actually play any games on your PS3 then ? Does it just power on for a few mins and then shut down ?

Well its not the same in my country, Customer guy is an indian dude that doesnt know what he's talking about.

Basically, told me if my warranty is out id have to pay a good $300 *Converted from my currency* to get a replacement.

But its not bad actually....i guess.

it will last about 45 mins to an hour the first time.. after that (cause it is still hot) it will last less than 10 mins

Normally when it is getting warm, it is really loud.

^ I do that, it crapped out on me for no reason!. thats why i was shocked, it was on for only ten minutes and then boom, it died.

I turn it off every night UNLESS im downloading stuff, but the night before that dreadful day, it was off...

Now im just waiting to see if they'll replace it for me for free, if not then im going to have to pay a fortune to get it replaced.

One question, will sony replace my console even if it was previously opened?. even if im willing to pay whatever it costs me to get it replaced if im out of warranty?.

i asked that ? and they told me that they abandon it. i dont know if it is true, but that is kinda bs if we are willing to pay. i just wanted to see if the fan was ever plugged in. why the hell should i pay 150 bucks and loose my ps3 for 3 weeks because some jackass didnt plug a fan in?

Sony customer service is garbage.

I have a Japanese PS3, They wont let me even pay for a replacement because of that, Only PAL ps3's they said.

This is just great, i pay a fortune to get a PS3 when it first came out, and this is how im treated.

Currently its at a gamestore, they say they have had ps3's with the same problem and that its fixable, Can anybody please confirm this?. Has anybody ever had a Red flashing lighted PS3 and had it fixed?.

I read on the forums that its from bad HDD's or something.
