First thing is, how much is too much?
There are so many options, with stand alone amps in which you need to buy your 5 speakers and sub unit, or you can buy all-in-1 packages with an amp and speaker system built in.
Sony do some nice all in 1 amp/speaker packages

There is an 800W 5.1 Sony system that I have that is pretty nice.

thats what i have and it works like a beauty...great sound, super sleek receiver not big and clunky...has 3hdmi in so i have my cable and ps3 hooked up through hdmi and i have one more connection for whatever they think of next. i highly recommend it if its in your price range...got it for 250 cuz my brother in law works at best buy but i would still pay the full price cuz its a really nice system.

Depends on your future prospects.
What do you want above all else?
Their are 2 kinds, the completely 1 package HIBs, the pre-packages, and the everything sold separately.
It seems you want the first or 2nd. And that depends on if you decide in the future you would just chuck it, or buy something completely beter, or you plan to slowly upgrade it peice by peice.
Both can be in your range, as they scale. but Logic tech gives very good quality for cheap prices if you want a one time, SS system. No upgrades nothing but works and works well.
